I've been a fan of steam engines since when I first saw one in 1957 when I was three years old in New York city where I was born. It's pretty amazing since that memory was seared into my head. The monstrosity of it literally amazed me. I've been a collector of railroad memorabilia although I haven't found much yet, just a 1940's conductor (?) lantern that I found a company that sells parts and I bought a kerosene tank a wick assembly and made it functional I also have 2 1942 glass insulators from a wooden pole cross arms. I am very happy to see #4014 brought back to life. I hate to see things of history disappear into piles of rust.

Can dig it! My first encounter with steam-power came at age 5 with the very last of the Reading Rambles in late '64 -- that T-1 was like some living, breathing (and very noisy) dinosaur to me! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aZqgerKZ17uql2g.html In '67 (at age 8) clambered awestruck on & around a defunct Big Boy at the original Steamtown in Bellows Falls, VT and... *mind = blown.* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZh-Z7WSrNyrgpc.html (see_3:30) Now at 60 I can't quite believe what I'm seeing in these vids, the sight is so improbable. They can't convey, though, the gut-level effect of this machine's commanding presence!=(Or am I still stuck in a child's overawed-viewpoint?) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNygdtB8utWVcas.html Cheers.

I finally did it. I finally broke down and turned my pockets inside out and bought a USA Trains G gauge Big Boy #4014. It is slightly used, but with tender loving care, I hope to have her looking as new as the real one here in this video. Aw, I've wanted this locomotive for decades, but just couldn't justify the expense. Seeing this video confirms that my decision was a good one. How can anyone not love this locomotive? It literally is big. Powerful and with enough moving parts to go from here to the moon and back. The Big Boy, to me, represents everything we Americans really stand for. We just lost our way, that's all. However, we need to find our way back. This locomotive might have been left for scrap had it not been for so many people. People who came together because we all love trains and we all love this locomotive, affectionately known as the "Big Boy". Its amazing to see something this size, this huge moving along the steel rails. I sincerely hope & pray where ever Big Boy goes, people will gather and remember........ American greatness is not dead, but alive!!! 🇺🇸🚂🇺🇸🚂🇺🇸🚂

"Good Morning America How are ya. Don't You know me I am your Native son" Such a feeling that song gives watching this video. True the song is about the City of New Orleans by the Illinois Central. However It about the feeling of Riding a train and the unique experience one gets from the rhythm of the rails. Just like the big boy it a feeling that i am glad to see return. Nothing like the sound and feel of the rails.

I would almost kill to have 844 shipped over to France to have a proper race against Tornado along the tracks the TGV normally runs on. Regulators wide open, full passenger consists, let's do this. US v UK Steam Race 2020! God knows we'll never find out how fast 844 is on home rails. FRA speed limits put an end to that. We know she'll hit said limits without even trying, though...

@@Astrophysix1 Tornado's actually British, and was built brand new about...ooh, 8 or 9 years ago? Not a restored antique, not a well preserved unit that never got restored, she's brand new. She featured prominently in a Top Gear episode wherein Jeremy Clarkson fed her voracious appetite(ish) while May raced her across the isles in a 50s Jag and Richard used a 50s bike. Great ep. Worth a watch. FWIW I do think 844 would outrun 'er.

@ethanlamoureux5306 5 жыл бұрын
@@TestECull Actually, FRA limits (79 mph typically) can be increased. We currently have Amtrak going 110 in some places, with more to come. Brighton/Virgin Trains USA is eventually supposed to do 125 in Florida. If the track is in good enough condition and the crossings properly dealt with, the only thing necessary is to have a properly operating Positive Train Control system, which is now being rolled out nationwide. Of course, you would need to interface the PTC with the old locomotives. The requirement for an automatic train stop or slowdown system was made back when these locomotives were originally in use.
@ethanlamoureux5306
@ethanlamoureux5306 5 жыл бұрын
@@Astrophysix1 I think the suggestion of France was made for the tracks, not the locomotive. The French have some of the most awesome high speed rail lines in the world, with all double track (good for racing) and the locomotives could go side by side, full out with no artificial limit on their speed.

If they work 4014 like they sometimes do 844, in the 'off season' she'll be running freight. And if I understand the US Transportation commission, until modern safety options and features are added (if added), a diesel locomotive is required for compliance with regulatory policies. If 4014 does run freight at all, it will probably be limited areas. I saw a view of the cockpit that suggested there are digital sensors and gauges along with a communications display for track information.

The UP 4000 Big Boy class had a worm screw from the tender to the fire box to feed it fuel and could consume up to 20 tons of coal an hour pulling heavy freight thru the Wasatch Mountains. Handing off its cars to the UP 3000 Challenger class was typical once it made it thru this range as the faster locomotives could handle the freight more efficiently on the Plains the UP travelled. Only one other Big Boy was ever oiled fired and it's the 4005 at Forney Museum in Denver but it was reconverted back to coal after testing it briefly to see if it was more cost effective. In its heyday the Big Boy could pull a train 5 miles long on level track unassisted and the 4014 spent nearly 60yrs on display outside in California and can be seen briefly in several movies like 1980s film BlueThunder. The first state line the Big Boy 4014 crossed after being restored in Wyoming was Colorado at night on a test run and the massive engine came and went from Weld County before rail fans caught on the next morning.

Except for the folks who insist on holding their phones in a portrait/vertical format, this is a great video. I've wondered if people who make portrait videos also mount their TVs sideways.

I gonna do this in 7 1/2" inch gauge of The Great Race to Ogden with Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 and Union Pacific FEF-3 #844 at a house in Byers, CO. This house has 2,283 acres.

Some days more to all the pieces will have the correct adjustments and the big boy will run only she. in this tests 2 locomotives(1 steam and other diesel) help a little. Is logic,the rings may adjusti to the cylinders,the bearings,all the levers, valves,etc.

Which one would you pick? Personally I'd like to see the 227 currently inside the Depot Museum in Duluth. She's been indoors for many years vs. sitting outside exposed to the weather and probably the best preserved.
@copland64
@copland64 5 жыл бұрын
@@mountainmanwannabe9495 I assume that 227 would be in the best overall condition, but it has had some theft issues, like the master steam pressure gauge that went missing. Unfortunately, It's probably a moot point because no one in MN has the steam shops required to rehab an engine.

I do think it quite amazing that Ed knows how to drive this thing, when has he ever done it before? Can you just go from one steam engine to another that simply?
@kurtvonfricken6829
@kurtvonfricken6829 5 жыл бұрын
That's a good question but since he was in charge if the restoration and probably knows every nut and bolt my guess is he can drive it. I would assume driving it is basically identical to driving 3985 and perhaps he learned on that.

@@rearspeaker6364 This is true as far as the break-in period goes, but it would have been easier to mask in a traditional double-head. All in all, I'm excited to see 4014 running, and they'll work out all of the kinks over the course of this year.

Do they have 2 qualified engineers when they go over the road? 1 qualified on the engine and 1 qualified on the section of track they are running over?
@Toledo1940
@Toledo1940 5 жыл бұрын
Bob Snyder: The man sitting directly behind the engineer running the 4014 is almost certainly a "pilot engineer," an engineer who is familiar with the section of track over which the engine is operating. There will probably be several of these people, as the engine is run over several parts of the Union Pacific in the future.

Great to see the inside of the cab. Can anyone tell me, is this locomotive still fired by coal, or has it been converted to burning oil?
@williamgottlieb8723
@williamgottlieb8723 5 жыл бұрын
I do believe it was converted to oil as the 3985 was way back when. I think it is easier to operate them that way in all respects as to running and supplying the fuel.

Why not more cars for the break in? N&W 611 pulled 20 Pullman’s on its own first time out after a 20 year break no diesel in the consist and that was in the steep Virginia mountain country.

I say after the break in, shoot for the moon. According to the 1984 National Geographic special, "Love Those Trains", the Big Boy locomotive could pull a train that is five miles long. Staging that stunt would surely get a few lines in the papers!
