The new 2019 Jetta is Volkswagen's biggest "compact" sedan ever and at the same time, the most efficient gasoline Jetta to make it to America. With a standard 1.4L turbo engine and an enormous back seat, this is the spacious and efficient German alternative to the Civic and Corolla we've all been waiting for. Some may complain that it's no longer a "discount Audi" but I think that VW has finally found their groove with efficient packaging, a long warranty, high value and a dollop of German suspension tuning.

A friend was in for the weekend this week and rented one. This is a very refined sedan that would impress a luxury car owner and in fact did with both of us. It feels like a substantially built smaller entry from the mid sized European segment in motion. It’s a very comfortable and safe feeling place to ride and you don’t become tired after riding in it for a few hours. Really nice entry.

@@sleazykilla360 I have a GLI S and am proud. Cloth seats are great. Besides, it still has the auto-dimming mirror and automatic dual zone climate. For a "base model" it isn't bad. Granted, you don't get that stuff in a regular Jetta S.

Thanks for such thorough reviews. I also noticed the videos are now 4K. While car reviewers simply want to drive fast exotic cars and make praise of those cars. Alex is probably one of the only car reviewer that does the comparison on real cars that most people are planning to buy. I am glad he doesn't get sponsors to fund his work because that tends to produce bias. Keep it up!

@@squidproquo2241 Well he has glowing reviews on the honda accord... And as far as I know that is Japanese. His 2 top compact crossover picks are Japanese. If he was 'sponsored' by the Germans, he would only be reccomending the Tiguan and Passat. I agree that he is not stating the lack of German reliability enough, but his job isn't to track auto manufacturer's reliability. Better to look to consumer reports or something for that

Except haters including the Europeans themselves everyone feel the urge to praise the Accord. Because it is a superior car. Which makes the top ten car list of Car and Driver magazine every year for the last, well, 30 years or abouts. The tell tale sign of a hater is that the baseless claim of "Instead of an Acura by a Honda" and this reviewer is no different than that. Why do you feel urge to defend him, do you think that I am insulting him or something? Or, do you think that I am being unfair to him? Have you ever asked to yourself that I maybe right, at all? Why do you think that you maybe impartial on your claims or assessments about cars? Have you listened other reviewers? Better yet, have you ever tried to be bias free of anything yourself, so that, your judgement would be objective, etc?

So feedback otherwise it's more pertaining to the video I'm definitely glad that you did this review. I've been on the market to get another vehicle and I was almost settled on a 2016 Mercedes E350 however between your review and then also driving a Jetta the last couple months is a rental I am sold on definitely going and looking seriously at purchasing one of these.

@apl175 - Amber turn signals should be mandatory. Red is strongly associated with braking... amber is warning. But some companies just want to be different. At least with VW/Audi, trend is for independent lighting. I can't stand bulb setups used for both brake and signal. That's just stupid.

For anyone reading this in late 2020... I just purchased a 2020 GLI, and it has red turn signals now, as does any Jetta in 2020 or 2021.

Had one of these as a rental a few months ago and I was quite pleasantly surprised. I thought I was in a new Passat at first.

Had mine almost a year now. 13,000 miles. Zero problems. Averaging 38 mpg and I'm rarely on the highway. When I am it gets 46-47mpg. Easy back roads and your can get over 50! Have no idea how the EPA only got 40hwy. Surprising power from the 1.4, similar to the 2.0L diesel which is fairly quick. Very quiet inside. Handles like a VW! Oh and I got the 6sp manual 😄 Mine is the base model S and it has drivers assistance... Emergency braking, side and rear warning. Yes it can come with that. Auto lights and Android Auto also. Back up camera too.

I have 2019 vw Jetta sel trim. Had it almost 2 years and no issues so far. Great fun car for every day driver. My favorite car so far. It good in the snow weather climate. I almost chose Mazda 3 over the Jetta because Mazda 3 has awd but I so glad I didn’t

Great review; just what I hoped to hear - Four "A" scores. Why did VW drop lumbar on the lower end Jettas? My '14 Jetta SE has it and I love it. Wow. The new Jetta is looooong; it may not fit in my garage space. 😒. My 2014 Jetta has been reliable and enjoyable. The VW "pleather" seats are good, IMO. Did Alex mention the new VW warranty (72,000/6 years)? It should help sales for the Jetta.

I just picked up a GLI S with the DSG. It's actually not bad for a base model. Mine came with an auto-dimming mirror with Homelink (garage door opener) and compass. And automatic dual-zone climate is standard. If you don't care about leather or the digital gauge cluster, I'd say the S is fine.

@@lukaszficek9870 Just saw this reply. Congrats on the S3. A friend has an RS3 and the A3 family is collectively a great car. Handles really well! I mean, I should know considering it's all MQB anyway. Went from a GTI to this GLI and love both of them.

I really like how this car looks from every angle except when the front comes into view; that maw is a bit off-putting. Otherwise it looks every bit like an Audi A3, and I usually have to double-take to make sure it's "just a Jetta". Very premium-looking!

Did you experience the rattling sound when you get to around 60 KPh? There is some.vibration that comes through to the gas pedal too.

Did I miss something? There seems to be no mention at all about the VW warranty which has the best basic warranty in the business at 6 years/72,000 miles. Seems like that is worth mentioning.

@@classikz Warranties reflect a manufacturer's confidence that their customers won't be "spending all their time at the dealer getting their shit fixed." Like any insurance policy, an issuer offers a warranty if they're confident that on average they won't have to redeem it. Don't they teach you this stuff in middle school?

@Shamur Stewart Nope...That is ONLY the power train, b2b is only 3yrs 36k. VW is b2b 6yrs/72k on EVERYTHING. Historically VW powertrains are very good and last a long time regardless of the warranty.

@@watershed44 Actually, Hyundai and Kia have a 5 year/60,000 mile basic warranty. But that is indeed still behind VW's 6/72k. Again, VW has THE LONGEST comprehensive bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage of _any_ automaker. That is fact.

Also, as I live in FL, I was disappointed that the Jetta’s moonroof doesn’t have a normal headliner cover. It is a transparent screen allowing sunlight in all the time.

Different strokes for different folks...and climates. I have the same mesh cover on my GTI but I live in the Pacific Northwest where cloudy, cool days are the rule rather than the exception. My MK6 GTI had a smaller sunroof with an opaque cover but I prefer the MK7.5 version in terms of allowing more light into what would otherwise be a very dark cabin. If I lived in Florida or Arizona I might well have a different opinion.

I drove the 2019 Jetta SEL Premium (top trim) and 2019 Mazda 3 Premium FWD (top trip) the same day a few weeks ago. I was hoping the big Jetta sedan would be my favorite because of its bigger size, six year warranty, big digital displays, mpg, and the roominess. To me, the Mazda 3 won easily. The cars were roughly the same price, but the 3 was much more quiet in town and on the highway, and it went over big bumps with a taut, rubbery feel while the Jetta hit them in a jarring fashion. The Jetta's back seat room and its wider front seats were better for me, but the serene quality of the 3's cabin on the highway overwhelmed any other variable for me. After driving these two cars, I went home and drove my son's 2016 Honda Touring for comparison. The Civic is more quiet than the Jetta and has a better engine than the Jetta, but the 3 was more quite and its plushness trumped the Civic's engine.

This is helpful. I also test drove both. Living in the north, the only thing really holding me back is Mazda leaving off steering wheel heat in the US market (you can get it in Canada.) It bothers me more in principle than in practicality.

@@matthewvandenbosch5671 You like the size of the Jetta better but the Mazda quality and made in Japan obviously kick the Mexican Jetta.. then you SHOULD go drive the Mazda 6. It's probably the size for you and you can get the base model for under 20k.

Alex, I would like to ask you to mention what type of fuel is recommended for each car when you speak to its fuel efficiency, as price differences between 87 octane and 91/93 octane are quite large.

George L most modern engines adjust to the fuel you put in. There is no real need to get for higher octane unless you are looking for a much higher performance

sap268 Most do, but not all. It is still very important. Furthermore, you will be seeing a reversal on DI engines soon, which will bring back higher compression engines that won’t run 87.

The Mazda CX-5 is the only mainstream vehicle I can think of that can take either fuel but gets about 30 more horses when fed preeminent fuel.

Joshua Rutter All Ford Ecoboosts can. Actually, any engine can. They adjust their ignition timing for the octane.

Those torque figures on the Jetta is impressive for a NA, those are turbo numbers. The price and value factor is a plus for me. Good job VW!

The Jetta is a 1.4 liter turbo, not naturally aspirated.

We've been really pleased with our 2019 Jetta S. Although, the seats aren't as comfortable as we'd like, the fuel economy for the manual transmission has been around 40-45 mpg highway. We did get blind spot monitoring and auto braking and they work well (maybe a little too well for the braking! :-) )

We had a 1997 with 200K and no problems until then. I realize that was a long time ago and things have changed since then but, we expect the same now. **knock on wood**

@Kristina Picha _ Individual examples does not determine the overall quality of a brand. I am driving a Chevy Malibu, it has 205,000 miles on the and the engine did not even start burning oil yet. But this does not mean that GM is making engines as reliable and durable s Honda and Toyota. Because overall Chevy's are not much better than European brands in means of reliability.

I have had my 2019 jetta s (auto) for around 10 months now.My fuel economy varies from 37 to 42 depending on how I drive.I have put 33k miles so far without any issues😊

The Hyundai Ioniq definitely doesn't have a "larger interior." In fact, its interior room is one of the smallest in the segment. Go see for yourself in person.

Not sure if I just missed it--but I did not see anywhere or hear you say whether the 1.4 and 2L engines are turbocharged? I imagine so with those numbers but was wondering for sure...

It's in the description, and he says it several times in the video, both engines are turbocharged. VW doesn't offer a single naturally aspirated 4-cylinder in the United States anymore.

Love the gas mileage, but hate the obnoxious noise it makes shifting into low gears at times....almost a grinding noise. After several complaints to VW (it's brand new), and me being very noisy with them, it's going back and upgrading to a GLI

I don't know. If you don't like auto start/stop it has to be deactivated every time you start the car. Also, it is built in Mexico. Over the years, I have become skeptical about any car built in Mexico. However, this car looks like it could be an excellent value for the dollar.

I so miss my 1015 Jetta SE with the 1.8 engine. When my lease ran out I got this 2019 thing, And it sucked in every way except for the interior, So I went back to the dealer a year later, paid a fee and got a 2018 Golf Tsi and it's a hella lot better. I Coulda got a GTI but the Golf works out just fine. The Mark 7 chassis in the Jetta is amazing, but it really needed and independent rear and more power...much less torque....why spin wheels and go slower and bounce like crazy over speed bumps, terrible suspension. I also love playing the "Blue Game"....the automatic in the automatic Golf kills the manual every time the Jetta every time. Just my opinion, maybe I am wrong? I am...f me, wish I got the GTI

If you are thinking to buy a new VW JETTA 2019, think twice. I bought this car in May 2019. The 8 speed automatic transmission, beside making a grinding noise when is driving at a constant speed of 30 to 40 miles per hour (+/_ 1,200 RPM), make an annoying vibration. The service department and the VW representative said that the vibration and noise are normal. I think this is the most ridiculos answer that I ever heard from a car manufacturer. I when to different VW dealers and drove a brand new car and all have the same problem. Be careful when you test it, maybe you will not notice it at the beginning. Just type in Google "Jetta 2019 transmission problems" and you will see. Pd: This happens on roads not very steep as we have in florida. Thanks

get the Rline...the ESD (electronic slip diff) and wider tires are worth it...best looking exterior/interior wise...the aison 8 speed transmission makes some peculiar breathing noises at

What about the Mazda 3 tho? I am a VW fanboy through and through and I like the Jetta, my mother downs a 6th gen which I find cheap-feeling in terms of interior materials and lack of Rain/Light sensor, but fun to drive, yet I am not as impressed with this generation as I had hoped to be. I wish VW would focus more on the premium end because I don't think they do inexpensive very well. For this class, I would much prefer a Mazda 3.

The exterior design lines are good but the size looks bloated to me. This is basically the size of a previous gen Passat. Do people really want these long sedans anymore? I wish they would introduce a new true compact sedan but they won't.

I for one love land yachts because to me, they are cool and the interior space is nice for me, but I feel what you are saying here. Compact sedans have been getting bigger and bigger over the years. They don't really feel like compact sedans anymore. It was the same thing with midsize sedans... They got bigger and bigger until they are pretty much fullsize sedans but with the name of midsize. That is one of the reasons why, I think, fullsize sedans are dying

The auto start/stop in a Volkswagen always defaults to "on" every time you start the car. There is no way to permanently turn it off. Also, their automatic forward collision braking system is buggy. It will, over the course of a month, randomly engage the brakes whether there is traffic in front or not. And that, too... is something you cannot permanently turn off, as it defaults to on every time you start the car. jetfowl doesn’t every auto stop start default to on? That’s due to EPA test requirements. If you want your car rated with auto stop start, rules say it must start up with it on.

A few points. First, all start/stop systems are not identical. The system in some vehicles cannot be disengaged at all. Further, some systems shut down auxiliary systems (e.g. heat/AC) when the stop/start system is engaged. Drivers of some brands complain there is hesitation or "jerkiness" in restarting the engine when pressure on the brake pedal is removed. And there are completely unconfirmed complaints that the systems place too much stress on the vehicle's starter. (This particular complaint ignores design changes in the starter that compensate for its more frequent use.) On my GTI the system can be engaged/disengaged easily with a button on the central console. (Some systems require a more complicated procedure via the infotainment screen.) If I don't want it available, defeating it when I start the car requires less than one second, much less than the time it takes for my cell phone, satellite radio, or nav system to be available. Auxiliary systems such as climate control , infotainment, etc. remain engaged with the engine turned off. And the system automatically disengages and restarts the engine if the drain on the battery is too great. In fact, there are times that the system is not engaged, even when requested, if the vehicle detects the battery drain is too great to maintain various auxiliary systems. Engine re-starts are virtually instantaneous and seamless, quicker than I can move my foot from the brake to the accelerator. I can hear the engine running when the system is disengaged. That's it. I typically don't bother to disengage the start/stop system. It results in a minor improvement in overall fuel economy but more important it reduces the air pollution I'm sharing with others when I'm waiting in line for my morning coffee. In fact, I've been the recipient of several appreciative comments from the attractive young ladies handing me my coffee that they appreciate me turning the engine off. (At my age getting an appreciative smile from an attractive young lady is a plus, in itself.) Finally, the video demonstrating that the automated emergency braking system is "buggy" is questionable, at best. I've never experienced anything remotely like the unneeded application of brakes on my GTI nor have I ever heard of it on any of the VW forums I frequent. That doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist so I did a more thorough google search and found that there have been a few (12) complaints about such behavior on the VW Atlas in the US and an article detailing one such case in Great Britain on a Tiguan. None for Jettas, or far more numerous Golfs. How come? Likely it's a combination of the higher ride heights of the Atlas and Tiguan (and therefore the height of the detector) and the particular environment in which the vehicles are driven. In the case of the Tiguan, for example, the couple who owned the car reported they were able to replicate the problem driving on the same stretch of road. No manufacturer claims that AEB is infallible. Curves and hills can fool the detector and those environments impact vehicles of different heights in different ways. But the much more serious problem than unneeded application of brakes is failure to detect an object in front of the vehicle and that is a problem most common among Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

jetfowl I just bought a 2019 Tiguan and I find the Auto Start/Stop to be useful and streamlined and don’t ever want to turn it off. And I don’t have the issues with premature breaking with breaking. I understand everyone has different desires. But why don’t you just turn off the auto start/stop right after you click your seat belt? Make it a routine.

I feel like the Jetta was stretched so that VW can discontinue the Passat and place this as its replacement. The Passat has basically become the forgotten child in its segment.

I don't understand all the comments about VW reliability, it seems to be an American market thing, because in the rest of the world VW is famous for reliability and longevity. My family has had several Golfs and all were impeccable.

Karl P More like European reliability standards being lower than the expectations in the United States, mixed with higher maintenance/repair costs of European cars versus their American or Asian counterparts. European cars have never been known fir reliability in Asia or Europe either. They’re complex and more fun to drive, but reliable they are not.

Americans do more high speed driving than Europeans or Asians so they give us more powerful base engines than in other countries. Ironically, the company from the country with the Autobahn is not very good at this compared to the competition. For example, the Jetta has a turbo base compared to a NA in the Japanese competition. That alone will make them trail in reliability. The new Jetta also has transmission issues...I can't explain how they screwed that one up.

Joseph G That’s not a fact and not the reason. The actual reason is simple: we have much lower fuel prices. That allows us to drive larger and faster cars. It’s the same in Australia and the Middle East, where they don’t do nearly as much highway driving, but have the same cars and engines as in North America. Had it been due to highway driving, North America would have switched to Diesels LONG ago. You’d drive a tiny engine too, if you had to pay $10/gallon. To some degree, the culprit is also pollution. Europe and Japan are MUCH more densely populated than North America is and that creates a lot of smog. Their governments have been battling this by taxing imports and operations of larger engines, despite vehicle size. Thus, in most of Europe, driving a car that’s >1.6L in displacement is much more expensive. Japan too. This is hitting China now and they’re taxing anything over 1.5L. That’s why you now see most manufacturers turn to 1.5 or smaller engines, but adding turbos - China.

nothing about how that beam rear suspension handles broken small town country pavement. leatherette upholstery is just as bad as leather in terms of stickiness in the summer [unless one wears heavy clothing] and slipperiness in the winter.

I wonder if this is a programming problem that is easily fixed in minutes, or a fundamental design flaw. Until we know which it is, I would not consider a Jetta myself.

In the real World, the Jetta will undercut the 3 by at least 5k. Jetta has a 8 speed modern Automatic, Mazda uses a 6 speed Automatic that is 12 years old, and the Jetta has much more efficient engine. Both have Torsion beam rear axles. The Jetta can hold it's own. It has it's niche buyers. Just like Mazda. Both are no threat to the Civic or Corolla. Forte is solid too.

I still have a tough time choosing VW after their diesel issues. Maybe I just hate being lied to and costing people many thousands of dollars when they bought the product in good faith.

Of course. Ford with the Pinto and their trannys, Kia/Hyundai with their fuel economy claims, Toyota and unintended acceleration, GM with their ignitions . . . Maybe it's that when a manufacturer lies to a buyer, it is between them and the buyer. Bad enough, especially when it costs lives. But the VW lie, since it was regarding air quality, showed VW's contempt toward everyone.

It is simply immoral to not even offer basic camera-based automatic braking in a trim in 2019. The other features are conveniences, but AEB is an essential safety feature for the other people who use the road (e.g. pedestrians)

@@2004cyrus It's not in the car just for you. Wouldn't you feel better knowing the idiot tailgating you on the freeway has automatic breaking so he won't rear-end you if you need to slow down? It's like vaccinations, the more people have them the better off everyone is. Also, the majority of deaths are vulnerable road users who can't be made safer with airbags or crumple zones. If every car had AEB the rate of fatal accidents for these folks would fall dramatically.
