1-Liverpool v. Juventus-13 [5-1]
Many good teams this year, but Liverpool are above them all. 11 of 16 match day tables have them at the top, including the last 7. Last year at this time, it was Juventus enjoying a run at #1 that would last the rest of 2018, 25 straight weeks after taking #1 in MD06, but the all time heavyweight champ is Bayern with 28 of 30 weeks in 2017.
For Liverpool, the trophy can be the only focus, Juventus won’t be threatening much this year, at Anfield, it is a match a champion wins, without serious trouble. That is certainly how things began, complete domination of the pitch from kickoff, a couple of near misses, a few moments for Juventus to cross midfield, and then boom.
Jordan Henderson in the 13th, assisted by Salah, who went back with his pass given all space Henderson had to run up. Firmino in the 18th, tying Jesus for league lead at 12. Mo Salah got his 10th in first half extra time after being denied by Szczesny minutes earlier, 3-0 at half and it was already over. Juventus were totally inept, no offensive threat, and no way of stopping Liverpool either.
The 2nd half wasn’t much different, Firmino would get #13 in the 64th to take the SL1 lead over and come off along with Salah thereafter. The reserves would add one more with Saul Ardero, really coming on as a quality sub and occasional starter, getting his 3rd in the 86th. Ronaldo would pull one back in the final minute of regulation, it will add to his modest goal count, (7), and that’s about it.
Things can always change in this league, but Liverpool are clearly king of mountain for now. As for Juventus, no one saw this coming, yet another champion crashing out in defense of their title, and there doesn’t appear much they can do to change.
