2020-11-21 Cubbie: 3 Months Old!

#PandaStory Day 92: Today our beloved cubbie/biscuit/happiness/miracle/buddy/squeaker turns 3 months old! And on Monday, we'll find out what name he'll be given (voting was closed at midnight last night). For now, he's still spending time in the den with mother Mei Xiang bonding, snuggling and being grooming ~ lots and lots of grooming. And during the evening, night, and very early morning hours Mei Xiang is still taking him on field trips, as well as spending time in room 3's playpen. Also, Mei Xiang has been shredding and eating quite a bit of bamboo in the den ~ sometimes with him in there with her, and sometimes after leaving him in the playpen.

Good thing that cubbie comes equipped with so many little "handles" for Mom to take hold of him and pick him up by -- she's very clever and creative in how she does this!

Mei is a super mom to little " Happiness " he's growing so fast. I named little cubbie happiness because that's what he has brought us. Pure happiness.. I also agree Mei and cubbie are our get away from this crazy world. Best medicine there is.

Lol mommy mei on the teaching path cubby never to young to learn the drop n roll (trees are in your future)..i will never get enough of cubby sleeping on his bac......ooopps another drop n roll lesson ,,,,,, as i know they are bears but sometimes just on my part they are more human (they live in simplicity of now) how can you not get warm fuzzy feelings when watching thank you soo much doxiemom have yourself a nice enjoyable weekend 🌷😇🐼🐼🐾🐾🐾

Cubbie is getting some moves and some good stretching in. Mama seems to be giving him lots of exercise opportunities. What a great duo. I smile everytime I watch a new video. I have never seen a Panda grow or realized what a difficult job the Mama Panda has to take care of the baby and how much work it takes for baby to grow. I am learning so much from these videos. Thank you!!!!

he melts my heart on the daily. i was watching videos again of him when he was just a day or two old, and then a few more as the weeks went by - and time has really flown and our cubbie has grown so fast. and i wish he wouldn’t grow so fast. stay a baby as long as possible and let us watch him exercise so little legs. but yes alas time will not stand still so i’m savoring every single moment i can catch watch cubbie practice his moves and listen to that beautiful voice. he truly is the miracle of 2020 in so many ways & i’m excited to hear his name 🙏🏻🐼🥰 what a journey we get to share. thank you to the SNZ for keeping the panda cam round the clock & to DoxieMom for some very special compilations 💕💕💕

How she loves holding her cub, cleaning him, rolling him and carrying him. I think I saw kisses! He is not going hungry that's for sure, the size of him! I love the black and white sometimes have to configure what is were. She is such an amazing mom, totally devoted. They are a joy to watch...my daily therapy from the mad world. Nature never fails to clear the course! Can't wait to find what his name will be. Also love watching the vets doing their important work. Thank you.💞👍😊

Cub was quite active this morning. Twice I noticed he managed an actual sitting position with legs properly under his bum. He sure is trying to get all for limbs to coordinate! Won't be long now. 💙🐼

Doxiemom19 did you see where scientists have made an algorithm to identify pandas by their eye patches? Apparently each one is different like a thumbprint. I hadn't noticed until I read the article. Now I can see each panda's is slightly different. I am sure on of those great mama hugs was Mei saying 'love you so much my big son! Come here let me clean you!" Lol Thanks DoxieMom!

Kathleen, they remove some of the big stalks of bamboo, and the overflow ... but they let Mei Xiang determine how much nesting material she wants in her den. Apparently she wants more now as she's been a busy momma shredding bamboo in there the past week! And yes, it does seem to get in cubbie's way ... wonder if it frustrates him as much as it does me on his behalf 🐾🐼❤️

I know that the personal in charge are doing an amazing job taking care of Mai an her baby. I'm wondering if somebody could clean a little the den. Sometimes I get concerned that the baby can get hurt by some much dry bamboo around him. Thank so much for your wonderful work.

Maria, the keepers remove some of the large stalks of bamboo, and some of the overflow, but Mei Xiang is in charge of how much bedding/nest material she wants in her den for her cub.

Helena, given that 2020 is anything but normal, and that his 100th day birthday falls right after the holiday, the Zoo probably thought it would be better to announce it a bit early. I'm not even sure he'll get a celebratory naming ceremony given that the Zoo is closed starting Monday.

I notice that when Mei xiang drops cubbie from her belly of slides him away, she looks for cubbie's reaction. Once, he remained seated. Other times, he remained in the same position he happened to be at. Is that "lazy" thing to do? I also notice, Mei seems to bend her head when she tries to look for/at cubbie. Are pandas nearsighted? Name 名字Qi Ji → Google : 1. 奇蹟 (chines) 2. Miracle (Eng)。幼崽的名字叫Xiao Qi Ji 很好！叫QiQi 也很好！ Mei Xiang 很喜歡Tian Tian ，但交配時她的動作不對 (全身平趴在地上)，Tian Tian什麽也做不了，真擔心2020年又落空… …。動物園的科學家用人工授精幫她，非常聰明的做法。22歲的媽媽生了一個強壯的男崽，奇蹟！感謝動物園所有人員的努力工作！謝謝！

I've seen other videos were baby pandas this age or younger are all put together in large room or area. The baby pandas cant even walk and the older pandas bully them. Either baby pandas were taken by their moms or are test tube artificially made- I dont know they were created or why they are alone- the videos like this dont say. Now maybe one thru five I can accept if maybe their mom passed, got sick or rejected them maybe understandable- but --tons of them???- it's very sad. I guess even the though this baby panda is thrown around harshly or being left alone seem sad--- he actually seems to be pretty lucky compared to the other pandas left alone to be bullied, knowing no love from their mother. This one at least gets hugged, kissed and smothered with affection.

I also have a lot of panda videos pop into my feed on KZfaq, and many are what you describe-- videos of multiple baby pandas primarily being raised by humans. With so many babies all the same age, I also assume these are some sort of large scale breeding/repopulation programs in China, done mainly through artificial insemination. Otherwise, how do they manage to get so many babies all the same age? While they make for cute videos seeing all those babies together, and the keepers (nannies they call them) seem to have the perfect job, I feel like having one panda baby like this one, who gets the full experience being reared by its mother, and not handlers, is MUCH better and healthier for the panda.

Selah, those videos are from the breeding centers in China where they take the cubs from their mother around 6 months of age. Not going to discuss that practice here ... let's just focus on our little bundle of joy and the excellent job his mother is doing raising him! Thank you 🐾🐼❤️

Twin births are not unusual among pandas. In the wild, the mother generally chooses to raise the stronger newborn and the other is left to die, because she just isn't physically able to raise both. (Not enough milk due to vegetarian diet, among other things.) At the breeding centers, staff will take one baby away to feed, then switch it later with its sibling and alternate them, thereby giving the mom a chance to raise and bond with both. That's one reason there are so many videos of humans raising cubs. Totally agree it'd be great if cubs could stay with their moms until they're almost 2 years old as they do in the wild. Unfortunately right now they try to breed female pandas of childbearing age sooner rather than later in order to increase the population. It's possible this may change as the limited number of "families" of captive pandas means the risks of inbreeding are increasing.
