For the latest Chevrolet Colorado pricing and information:
www.kbb.com/chevrolet/colorado/
The most highly customizable of the midsize truck bunch, you can get a Colorado with the standard extended cab and both a short (5’2” Bed) or long box (6’2” Bed) and an crew cab with both short and long box options. Other midsize trucks only offer a short bed option with the extra passenger row in the cab.
Base model Colorado’s feature a 2.5-liter 4-clyinder engine (200hp/191 lb ft torque), but an awesome 3.6-liter V6 (308hp/275 lb ft torque) that sounds just like a muscle car can also quench your desire.
The Colorado takes bragging rights as the only midsize truck offering a diesel. At least at the making of this video, the Gladiator’s is coming. The Colorado works a 2.8-liter Duramax 4-cylinder turbodiesel (181hp/369 lb ft torque).
Thanks to that power plant, the Colorado currently boasts best in class towing at 7,700 pounds. And a 1,578-pound payload capacity with the V6. I’m not keeping count, but already that’s a lot of different ways you can order your Colorado.
Mated to those engines is either a 6-speed automatic transmission you get with the 2.5L and the turbo diesel and an 8-speed on the V6.
The eight-speed here on the V6 does a nice job of picking the right gear when you want it and helps deliver power smoothly, and efficiently especially when you’re in need of a little bump. Though its max torque comes at the high end of the rev range.
The front suspension is independent with coil overs and the rear has a solid axle with two-stage multi-leaf springs.
A beefier G80 automatic-locking axle comes standard on the off-road Z71 and ZR2 trims, but is an option on both WT and LT trim levels.
Now, I know this is the that beefed up suspension and upgraded Multimatic shocks make it super comfy, but even in the base models, I really like the ride quality in the Colorado.
It’s firm and comfortable, not floaty or trucky, but it’s not too harsh either. And I really praise the steering in the Colorado. It’s got good weight, not too light. There are no dead spots to speak of and isn’t overly sensitive.
It’s also highly maneuverable. You should see the parking space I have to squeeze this into at home. And the Colorado does it easily. Overall, driving the Colorado is a great experience.
As far as off-road chops go, a two-speed transfer case with driver-selected front-and rear-locking differentials make easy work of tough terrain in this ZR2.
If you want something even more aggressive, check out the Colorado ZR2 Bison was designed with AEV and got steel skid plats, a spot for a front winch and more recovery points in the rear.
The Colorado base model isn’t the lowest priced ($22,395 including destination) of the competitive set, which includes the Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Gladiator, Honda Ridgeline, Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier.
The higher Colorado LT trim adds a body-colored rear bumper, Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 Plus system and a six-way power adjusted front seat for $28,795. Climb up the trim ladder to the Z71 with an off-road suspension, automatic rear-locking differential and EZ Lift & Lower tailgate and you’re looking at $36,995. This ZR2 trim starts at $42,890.
The safety department is one where the Colorado needs some improvement.
If you’re hoping to get the latest crash-avoiding stuff like forward collision alerts and lane departure warnings you have to upgrade to the LT and ZR1 off-road trims only, and even then, it’s an additional almost $700 package.
The interior of the Colorado feels really well laid out, even if it’s not fancy. Chevy doesn’t use a ton of premium materials in here compared to some of the others in the segment, even on the upgraded trim levels. But buyers do get a 7-inch touchscreen standard on the work truck. This is the upgraded 8-inch touchscreen. There’s a decent ratio with physical buttons, which I like.
The cupholders are the baby versions, so no Big Gulps of coffee, Tim. Sorry. Storage is adequate, you’ve got cubbies here, and here, and two USB ports come standard on the base Work Truck with four on the LT, Z71 and ZR2 trim levels. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility comes standard across all trim levels.
Other optional amenities including wireless charging, Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, Bluetooth audio streaming for up to two devices as well as XM satellite radio and other downloadable apps enhance the in-cabin experience.
I really dig the looks of this truck. And again, yes, this is the beefed up ZR2, but it’s not just this peacocking edition that I like. The exterior looks strong and tough, but not overwrought.
As for fuel economy the numbers are the best of the midsize truck bunch. (
2.5L I-4 (2WD) 20 city/26 hwy; (4WD) 19 city/24 hwy
3.6L V-6 (2WD 18 city/25 hwy) (4WD 17 city/24 hwy) (ZR2 16 city/18 hwy)
2.8L Turbo-Diesel (2WD 20 city/30 hwy) (4WD 19 city/28 hwy) ZR2 18 city/22 hwy)

Plastic is fine. Penny-pinching on that plastic to save less than $1.00 per vehicle because that's how to get your bonus for your sub-sub-department is just criminal and exactly how NOT to run a serious 21st manufacturing operation.

I have a Colorado rental in my driveway right now. It is really surprising how sophisticated and poised it is. It is a 2wheel drive V6 with an 8 speed transmission. This truck is very quiet and rides nicer than expected. I like that while it isn't too big like the full sized trucks it also isn't too small like previous mid sized or compact trucks I have driven over the years. More than anything this truck reminds me of Ford Explorers I have driven only much better in every way. One small annoyance is the seat belt lock mechanism is floppy and moves around as you try to stick the belt into it. Maybe this helps make it less intrusive and pliable when different drivers are in the seat but my other cars are much easier to lock the belts into. The large screen backup camera with moving guides on the screen that mark your path make backing up easier than I ever thought possible. I know a lot of cars these days have this but it is new to me. Also I like the programmable instrument cluster screen in the middle. I prefer the digital screen over looking at the analog speedometer and when you set the cruise control it displays the speed it was set to on the screen along with each click of the speed button up an MPH or down HPH. "SPEED SET TO 55 MPH" or click the tab up "SPEED SET TO 56 MPH". Of course the blg brother black box on board is watching you and all of this will be used against you in the event of an accident.

I have a red 2018 Z71 extended cab I bought new, 43k miles, love it so far. I agree it drives much better than the Ranger and Tacoma. Those are great trucks too, I've driven each extensively, but the Colorado feels the most planted and properly sorted out. I do wish I had the newer infotainment system, I have the older MyLink one, works fine but this one's cleaner and snappier. Love your style Lyn, great review!

@@TheRealTrimBrady Needed? Sure, you can say it's not "Needed" to have those features, but when they're charging a premium for their top trim truck, it should have those features! The price is too high to be missing those things. Further, I'd say it is "Needed" as I know a lot of people that will buy a different vehicle because its missing push-button start alone (Me being one of them!). Nobody wants to spend half a years income on a vehicle that doesn't have new tech features found on every other modern car/truck, and yet costs the same if not more than any other car/truck! They're not going to beat Toyota on perceived reliability so they need to draw in buyers with features.. which its lacking badly!

ALL ZR2's have a E-Locker in the rear and front diff, G-80 is for lesser trim trucks as option. Interior is perfect for off roading, easy to clean up mud, dirt and sand. Leather seats are comfortable for long trips. If you want more performance a tune and gears really wake these up.

Correction: The ZR2 has WAY less (only 5000lbs) towing capacity than a standard Colorado...but that's generally the case for vehicles designed for off-road use. IIRC, the Ford Raptor has less also. And definitely the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon does (3500lbs)...the Jeep Gladiator is an exception though...but then it also costs way more than a ZR2! -- BR
@TheWVgoodguy22
@TheWVgoodguy22 4 жыл бұрын
I was going to mention that as well. Trying to do a full lineup review while driving the off road halo truck trim level can be misleading in this and the Raptors case. The Gladiator Rubicon can tow 7000+ pounds somehow? Exactly doesn’t matter if there’s a diesel or gas motor in the ZR2 the tow rating is 5000 lbs. Plus the off road trim doesn’t have bumpers for those driving alerts nor does it have the bumper steps.
@billredding2000
@billredding2000 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheWVgoodguy22 I presently have a 2016 Honda Pilot (towing capacity 5000lbs) and that'd be the minimum I'd want in my next Daily Driver, since at the very least I need a vehicle that can tow the largest U-Haul trailer they have (6x12) and fully-loaded! AND have some towing capacity left over to make it easier on the Pilot's drive-train and suspension. Am planning on purchasing a 2021 ZR2 (March 2021), so although the 5000lbs limit IT has towing-wise is disappointing, it's a trade-off I'd be will in to make to get a WAY more capable vehicle off-road (a real 4x4 vs. an AWD, as excellent as my Pilot's iVTM4 AWD sytem really IS) yet at the same time, comfortable to take occasional long highway road-trips. So the ZR2 would also be able to tow the U-Haul 6x12. Sure, I'd like it to tow 7000lbs -- so I could tow a small travel trailer (maybe 5000lbs fully loaded? ) as that'd give me my desired 2000lbs towing-capacity "cushion," but the ZR2 can't do it. But when we get some SPECS on the new Ford Bronco coming out (already delayed) then I'll look at it compared to the ZR2 and make a choice. Hopefully, there'll be enough info released and people/owners posting KZfaq videos about the 2021 Bronco and I'll have plenty of data to go on and make a fair comparison. Were I t buy NOW, however, I'd go ZR2. I'd get a Ford Ranger IF it had the same/equivalent specs the ZR2 has (front locking differential, off-road tires, Multimatic/DSSV-equivalent shocks, etc.) -- but the Ranger doesn't and wasn't designed to compete with the ZR2, just a standard Colorado. And the "Ranger Raptor" may be a while coming (and not sure I'd want one anyway). But the BRONCO should be here soon...so for me, it'll be a ZR2 or Bronco. One thing that DOES bother me about gettign a 2021 ZR2 (besides wondering if the Multimatic shocks will start leaking!) -- it won't get the new 2.7L 4-cylinder turbo engine until 2022-2023? That's a bit to long for me to wait (waiting that long, my Pilot will sell for much less, and I want to put a good down-pay't on my next Daily Driver so March 2021 is the time). I hope the ZR2's V6 gas (do not want the diesel) will be good enough...AND the Multimatic shocks don't die on me prematurely. ;-) -- BR

Agree with what she’s saying about the delayed power. It’s got the power but it behaves like a work truck strong but not sporty. Shifting in the manual helps you get up to speed quick. The power is there it’s just the Colorado’s personality, wants to remain mellow.

I’m actually considering a Ranger, as funny as that May sound. I want something that has some decent low end torque. Combined with the 10-speed should quite capable. Of course reliability and longevity are yet to be determined for it in this application but being the only drivetrain for the model should mean decent parts availability and prices should that be needed.

Never again would I get a Colorado! Three times the Stiability Control light came on. First time covered under warranty. Second time was covered after many phone calls. Third time no go! $975.00. Was out of warranty because of time. Only 36k on it. Chevrolet was no help. Have lots of cash on GM Card, would never get a GM again.

Nothing new here..look the same when it came out in 2015. Should have some upgrade by now such as push button start, sun roof and better if wireless CarPlay. Only change is the paint color and wheels. Seem like GM is following Nissan. Making its midsized truck look the same in 2 decades with minor interior updates

The Tacoma is actually a terrible truck. The seating position is horrendous, the engine is gutless and inefficient, and the transmission is easily the worst in the industry in terms of reliability.

@Randy Jackson The Tacoma has greater resale because Toyota sells them at with transaction prices. All the competition is sold with reasonable discounts. A Frontier has worse resale, but it's probably loses to depreciation after sale. So, in reality, Toyota owners loose more to depreciation. Also, Tacoma was dead last on JD power's 2019 3 year dependability study. All of them, the Frontier, the Colorado, the Canyon, beat it. The transmission in the Tacoma is the worse. It's been very unreliable. A of owners have complained it's problems, and Toyota doesn't do anything about it.
