THE BASICS:
Year: 2020
Make: Chevrolet / Chevy
Model: Spark
Trim: 1LT Automatic (there is a manual model available!)
Extra: n/a
Color: Mosaic Black with Jet Black Cloth interior
Type: 4D Hatchback
HISTORY/BACKGROUND:
This car was originally made by Daewoo Motors in South Korea starting in 1998. Daewoo eventually became GM Daewoo and now GM Korea. But the Spark has been continued though all the corporate mergers and name changes. It's still assembled in South Korea and now is growing in popularity here in the States.
Starting MSRP: Base model starts at $13,220, this is the LT trim level and it retails for around $14,595
HISTORY/BACKGROUND
+ The Spark is assembled in South Korea. I thought that interesting since Chevy advertises itself as a "american" made vehicle.
UNDER THE HOOD:
Engine: 1.4 liter inline 4-cylinder
Transmission: 2-speed continuously variable transmission with Overdrive
Horsepower: 98 at 6,200
MPG City: 30
MPG Highway: 38
Combined MPG: 33 (EPA's numbers)
Fuel Tank Capacity: 9 gallons
Cost for a full tank: Under 26 dollars by me (Chicagoland suburbs in January of 2020).
HANDLING:
Wheels: 15 inch aluminum wheels (tiny)
Turns on a dime. The Spark is a small vehicle with tiny tire. At low speeds if feels like you're driving a golf car. Parking is a breeze. And at high speeds it hugs the roads fairly well....though I felt a bit uncomfortable. The car itself didn't slip, but I did feel that if I pushed it a bit, that the back end might start to slide. But I think that's to be expected, this is not a high performance vehicle.
ACCELERATION:
Horsepower: 98
Acceleration is fine. I had no issues with it, but my daily commuter is something very similar. But if you're driving something with some power, you're definitely going to notice the difference. This is NOT a fast vehicle. If that's what you're looking for, I'd suggest you look elsewhere. This is a low cost, fuel efficient hatchback. And it drives like one.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
This is a very nice vehicle, especially if you're on a strict budget and looking for buy a new car for less than $15,000. It's comfortable, has up to date technology, and drives really well. My biggest concerns is durability, specifically the interior of the vehicle. It looks great new, but the materials feel a bit cheap. And I bet over time they show some serious ware and tear. Honestly, if you looking to buy at this price point, you might consider a used car with only a couple of years of miles on it. You will be able to get something MUCH nicer for this price. But if you must have a new car, well then I think you'll be happy with the Spark. I was.

If anyone is interested, I'm on my second Utah winter in my 2018 Spark (pretty much exactly the same as in the vid) and I can vouch highly for the traction control. I've made plenty of snow tracks on my way to work and navigated many an icy corner. This thing kills it in the snow! It's so good it's almost boring, no whipping the back end around, no burn outs, just traction and flashing dash lights to let you know it saved your life... Again. 14,000 miles down and it's the perfect car for the 2 of us. Best 13k I ever spent on a car!

@@christaylor467 Thanks for the reply. I have one more question I'm hoping you will answer. I see a lot of comments about how this car gets pushed around easily in strong winds. Some say it's hard to drive in windy conditions. I'm close to Lake Erie where it's flat and extremely windy. Especially in the winter months. Can you comment on any wind experiences you've had with it living in a mountainous state where winds can be an issue. Thanks
@christaylor467
@christaylor467 Жыл бұрын
@@dougroberts3643 I would say that's a fair complaint. It catches the wind pretty good, not as much as a van, but more that my prior sedan. I've never thought it was hard to drive though. Being a thin car you've got a lot of room in your lane to play with, and it's not blowing you out of your lane, if you've got a hand on the wheel.

I’m a big guy and drive one of these because my girlfriend got one. I usually drive my 06 Mercury (thing is a beast). But this vehicle has been so enjoyable to drive. We have the LT model. The reactive breaking and the cruise control make driving a breeze. The models with daytime LED’s are just a cherry on top. Looks cool and you get fog lights all the time. The maintenance required on this car is nice because most things take smaller parts, meaning easy to fix yourself. The Spark picks up power quick, letting you enter highways and go from green lights easily. For the size you wouldn’t think it would have power, but even climbing hills the thing goes right up. Even in snow! Amazing vehicle and if you like saving money on gas and living that slick economy life then this is it. We average 30-40 miles a gallon with 50k miles on the odometer. I’ve even seen it say 50 mpg! Lol Great car, Chevy really did something great here and I mean it. Economy and luxury combined (We have the LT model) I’m not the type to drive a small car, I’m 6 foot 3 and I fit nice and cozy and I even have an arm rest. The touch screen and ease of use the car has is incredible. For the price it’s a no brainer. Save gas, long distance travel is fine (we took a 3hr trip and it was great) and you’ll feel pretty comfortable doing it.

We have a 2019 for my kid's first car. It is a perfect first car with great sight lines, full warranty and a decent infotainment that is easy to use and NOT distracting for a newer driver. It is easy to park, easy on gas and handles surprisingly well (it is really well damped). I have used it to commute to work on occasion and have averaged over 40mpg. As an aside, there is plenty of rebates as small CUVs dominate sales now. We bought ours for over 10K.

I own a 2015 LS. The OEM radio was also married to OnStar. I fixed that with an aftermarket radio. The only thing I lost with the upgrade was the OAT reading. No big deal. Mine is the 5-speed manual. As you said, I would expect more than the mid to high 30s on the highway. Mine does. If I keep my foot light on the gas I'm getting 42 on the highway. In the city, not so much. About 35 max. I can live with that. At just over 80k miles and not a single issue so far, I'm considering a brand new one. I think I may op for the automatic trans this time around. The only thing I see here that turns me off would be the marriage of OnStar to the rest of the entertainment system. I Do Not Care for that at all. Thanks for taking the time for your review. Own a Spark for about 2 years now. Its really a fantastic car given how little I spent. MPG is accurate in cold weather driving around 70mph. Cruising at 65 gets you 40+ even in cold. Warm weather really boosts your fuel efficiency. Even though its just 98hp I get a pretty even power band so its very peppy on highways. Its slowest starting off from 0. Ive owned small cars in the past that woulr struggle past 75mph but the Spark handles 80mph below 3000rpm (usually at about 36mpg). 83-84 is when you'll hit that 3000+ rpm mark, which drastically kills your fuel economy and you'll start to hear that engine. Which is really as fast as you'd ever want to go outside of Texas to avoid major traffic tickets. About noise: I dont know if they used the same stock tires but the ones that were fitted in my Spark were brutally noisy and wore down pretty fast. When I replaced my tires the road noise practically vanished. I dont hear a lot of wind noise unless I'm cruising in gusty conditions so it could be youre hearing road noise. Also the transmission itself is noisy right about 40mph when it shifts from the low to high gear (since its a 2 gear CVT)

Way more fun and if you can drive a manual or want to learn get the manual. The cruise control works well with the manual on the highway and did 75 without ever giving me a issue here in iowa. I've got a base model 2013 spark, and I like most of the changes they've made to the interior over the last few years. They bumped the HP up from 84 to 98. The stereo system sounds much better, and the overall fit and finish looks better on the new one. The things I really don't like so much about the new spark is the front end, the exterior color is no longer accented on the dash and doors, and the gauge cluster is no longer a motorcycle inspired pod on the steering column.

A few years ago, I took my dog and rented one of these to drive cross country. I never got the back seat to fold forward, but thanks for showing everyone how. I had put my folded up dog crate behind the front seat, that was probably why could not figure it out. Most Enterprise rentals don't have owner manuals unless the cars are very new in my experience. But everywhere I went, people admired the car. I ent like the 9 gallon gas tank, I wish it were more but probably most people would not drive the car cross country. :)

Wondering if Chevy should have kept this one going. Gas is more expensive than ever. Hybrid cars are a 4-6 month wait. Sparks are on the dealer's lot 1-2 days & sold. For $4,500 over retail. I got mine last week. Wanted a 5-speed but they're gone. This is the last month to get these imported. I'm 6'1" & have great headroom with the seat all the way up. If you're not on a bad road it's quiet. Also smooth, good handling, nimble, easy to park & good on gas. Fun to drive. I'm on my first tank & the gauge hasn't moved much. At idle the engine is so smooth you think it's off. No timing belt to replace every 60K miles for hundreds of dollars. Chain. Good for the life of the engine probably.

I just bought a bare bones LS with a 5 speed for $9,995. (MSRP $14,095). Great 2nd car for running around town. Drives surprisingly well for a tiny car. The only thing that sucks on the LS is no power locks, windows or cruise control. My SUV has power everything but uses twice as much gas. I still have more fun in the Spark changing gears and it will eventually get passed on to my daughter as a first car.

I think you like small cars as I do for the Fun, practicality, fuel sipping, and low price. And when you spend less you have lower depreciation. I owned a 1986 Chevy Sprint 3 CYL 5 speed and I bought it as a winter beater stored my muscle and Classic Cars away and paid $700 for a 4 year old Sprint. I drove the piss out of that little 5 speed and it was like an extension of myself when I took the wheel. I drove plenty of Freeway time as well and back then the MPG were in the 5-0’’s and I spent $6 every 2 WEEKS for gas. $3 a week. I sold the car after 3 years for $1400 due to tiny specs of rust starting and every though I did my own rust repair I knew it would show up in other places soon. It was 8 years old. Back then all cars rusted. But man I put over 60K on that little car. And I had up to 4 of us adults in the car many times and on the highway. I would buy another one if I found one. Sure it was a death trap but the value was their.

Absolutely a great car and my background is in Detroit in vehicle development so I have an opinion. Anyhow, I rented one of these and I asked for a economy car and they said well here’s the spark and I took it and was so surprised at how much I liked it. It was so solid and did everything exactly like it was supposed to do and it was supposed to be a small economy car and it was had great gas mileage and I really like that. Anyhow. Next car a week later was a free upgrade cause they didn’t have a economy car like I had ordered. They upgraded me to a Kia, some kind a crossover or small SUV . This car did not work right I had to check the windows for leaks lots on wind noise, the engine and trans didn’t match up often seems to be in the wrong gears. Road noises made me check the tires, they were fresh and inflated correctly. Almost exactly twice the fuel compared to the Spark, same trip. Now the drivers carpet had a huge wear hole in it. So I thought this is a high mileage car , nope it was 1,000 miles more then the great spark. Both about 50,000 miles.

But some of the failures are shockingly early for this thing. And if it's made in the former Daewoo factory in South Korea.... NOTHING GOOD has come from that factory. Most of the problem GMs come from there and most original daewoos never even made it to 60K miles and VERY few made it past that.
