This is a from the February 9th 2020 scouting seminar. It was impossible to capture the entire 4 hour workshop and as you can see the conditions were less than ideal for filming. Hopefully you will find some value in the video we were able to piece together.

I'm 53. Started hunting at about age 6 or seven. Thought I knew a lot. Moved to a place about 15 years ago where the public land is mostly swamps, river bottoms, long stretches of flat lake bed that's sometimes under water, sometimes dry. During deer season water covers thousands of acres that deer use all during the spring and summer. For 10 years I believed the deer migrated out of the wet areas because there's no food in these wet areas. I believed they stayed near food. I did ok, but not what I wanted. Then I discovered Dan's teachings, and he taught me the mature bucks - even older, more experienced does and their family groups - were indeed out there hundreds of yards in those flooded areas. The would walk through chest high water, even swim part of the way - to get to tiny islands and high spots where they could find SECURITY! So I trusted Dan. I now have waders, even two small boats, and those remote areas are my destinations. I started living by the mantra, "I'm headed where there are many hoof prints, but no boot prints." It's hard to overstate what Dan's teachings have meant to me. Honestly, in my part of the world there was just no other way to learn it. It's like a know a *secret* that no one else knows!

That is great to hear. We are very much the same in the sense of we thought we knew how to find and kill deer until we tried to move on to the next level. Sometimes the most difficult of tasks can become much more clear when explained a certain way. I think Dan does an excellent job explaining his methods.

In northeast Texas and North Texas public a 130 to 140 buck is like up North 160 to 170 buck, no swamps, some river bottoms, those usually hold the bigger bucks, but many hunters walking through dry bottoms

Seems like the private grounds will produce more deer now. Finding also more pressure on public grounds and seeing fewer 🦌

Private grounds will always be good if managed properly but there seems to definitely be more pressure on public lands lately.

It’s really hard to do it in the same way that Dan does but relating the information to your situation is where we are finding success.

Was out about 2 weeks ago looking for sheds and was finding super fresh rubs with bark on top of the snow. No clue if they are just getting annoyed with their antlers and are trying to knock them off or there is still some young does not bred yet. These last few years seems deer behavior is just getting weirder and weirder.

Not sure on that one other than you can be glad they made it through the season.

Hey Diff: I don't think the behavior is getting weirder. They pretty much been doing the same thing for 4 million years, lol. What's changing - in my humble opinion - is your knowledge and experience. You're seeing things you didn't see before, and at first it seems strange. But I bet you're learning fast and building a base of great knowledge. It evidenced by you being on KZfaq watching educational videos instead of playing video games, lol. Deer will keep being deer - weird or not - just keep building your expertise and you'll be noticing new things for the rest of your life! Good luck.

Dan, appreciate the info, been watching your hill country videos for years and putting it to use successfully in Tennessee for many trips now. Will be using these for my swamps in GA.. quick question- what brand of camp is that vest you are wearing.. I use predator gear and love open pattern camo, so was wondering which brand that is? Thanks.

First, thanks for changing hunting for me forever. Second, the years where acorns aren’t dropping, what’s your acorn alternative focus, besides just finding hot sign? I ask because last year I hunted new public land and my best encounters were hunting isolated oaks with very limited agriculture near by. Thanks again.
@BowhunterChroniclesPodcast
@BowhunterChroniclesPodcast 4 жыл бұрын
I’ll see if I can get to that question on the next podcast we do with Dan. I know he said acorns are basically every other year. It may just be finding a different area that has acorns that particular year. Thanks for watching.

You need to put a couple markers in the group. Can I ask questions, start the conversations going. I got to believe that there's a ton more questions these people want to ask but don't. Just saying.
