Ducati’s Monster motorcycle jump-started the naked bike segment (and the Italian company’s balance sheet) when introduced in 1993. Fast-forward 27 years and the Monster 1200 S ($17,595) is the tip of the spear in Ducati’s sport naked bike lineup. Last updated in 2017, today’s Monster is slimmer and more in line with the original Miguel Galluzzi-drafted design, pairing clean, muscular lines with modern Italian tech.
--
The Monster 1200 is powered by Ducati’s legendary 1,198cc Testastretta 11 degree DS L-twin. Born from superbike competition, this liquid-cooled eight-valve torque monster has been steadily refined over the last decade. Dual-spark ignition and valve overlap techniques boost torque delivery while elevating fuel efficiency and overall engine smoothness.
Maintenance intervals have been stretched too, with suggested oil service every 8,000 miles (following the 600-mile break-in service). Recommended valve adjustment is listed at 19,000 miles.
How Does The Monster 1200 S Perform On A Commute?
Ducati’s contemporary electronics suite allows the rider to tune the powerband from mild to wild. Of the three combined engine/throttle maps, we prefered the “high” power setting, though throttle response remains overly sensitive-especially during more dedicated throttle application (i.e., wheelies). Adjustable wheelie and traction control help less experienced riders remain in control, however we preferred riding with these countermeasures disabled.
Although the exhaust note sounds tinny at idle, with speed it delivers a rhythmic thump-that makes riding motorcycles pleasurable. Ample torque, in excess of 60 pound-feet above 2,700 revs equate to a fun sporting character that is classic Ducati. If you enjoy riding high on waves of Pirelli tire smearing torque, then this powerband will suit you well.
Yet, this twin is just as ready to play at higher rpm belting out just over 129 hp at 9,250 rpm. A color TFT display keeps tabs on the engine’s vitals and is loaded with trip information. However, it could be larger in size. The handlebar-mounted switch gear and menu system could be slicker and we wonder why Ducati doesn’t opt for a touchscreen like some of its competitors?
Handling-wise, the S model’s premium Öhlins suspension strikes optimum balance between sport road holding and around-town comfort on rough stretches of pavement-a pleasant surprise based on past experiences with older Monster 1200 iterations. Both suspension components offer full suspension adjustment and we value the twist-knob-style compression and rebound adjusters on the gold shock body.
More nimble than we remember, the 2020 version is more apt to play yet retains steadfast stability. The cockpit, below the waist, remains tight for taller than average riders, however the seat height can be raised or lowered, in nearly an inch increment. Conversely the space between the seat and handlebar is more spread out-a boon for taller riders. Bold LED lighting helps riders stand out and the headlamp illuminates the road superbly during night rides.
The contrast between gloss and matte black finishes adds a degree of class to the 1200, not to mention a visual slimming effect. The sleeker 1200 R-sourced tail and Y-spoke alloy wheels are other nice styling touches. Keen eyes will note the signature Monster ski buckle allowing the 4.4-gallon fuel tank to be lifted for service needs.
2020 Ducati Monster 1200 S Commute Review Verdict
Leaner and certainly meaner, the 2020 Monster 1200 S is more adept at putting smiles on naked bike riders’ faces than it has been since fully moving to a water-cooled platform. Yes, it’s fast, yes it’s fun, but the hefty MSRP makes it less palatable when measured against the excitement it delivers behind the handlebar.

I own a 2018 Monster 1200 S and everything you say is spot on, right down to the transmission with a few extra neutrals. The transmission does get better with more miles and a firm toe, but mine still likes to surprise me every now and then. For me, motorcycles are a purely emotional choice and this bike tugs at my heart strings, so I bought it. If you don't feel the same way, there are almost certainly better bikes for the money. Lastly, don't pay MSRP. I offered 16k for mine and the dealer accepted without blinking an eye, which leads me to believe I overpaid. The last time I was in a local dealer, they had a brand new 2018 marked down to 14k +freight/assembly and tax.

Nonsense... there’s a position where the light will come on, he just didn’t have it exactly on point. This issue goes away after about 1000 miles, it’s a break in issue. Ducati’s are very tight from the factory and things need to break in nicely. I’ve owned 4 now over the last 5 years and have had literally zero problems with any of them, not even a single drop of oil on my garage floor. The bike isn’t fully broken in until after around 1500 miles. 600 miles is simply the dealer break in service where you’re allowed to rev higher etc.

Did we watch the same video? At 5:38 he turns the blinkers on to switch lanes to the right (not sure why, didn't seem like there was anyone behind to benefit from it) then leaves it on past the junction (giving wrong information to anyone at the lights waiting to turn right), until 5:55. Blinkers come on again at 11:11 and stay on for no apparent reason until 11:27. At 18:47, when it would definitely have been good to indicate right, before taking the space that white car could have been gunning for, the blinker stayed off... then indicated left and merged to the right immediately after! Not to mention the high beam being constantly on - why?

I own the 2019, and I love it. I also have the 2012 Monster 1100 Evo. 6’2”, 225 lbs. 34 inch inseam. Bike fits me great. The 2019 engine is smoother than the 2012. I get false neutrals sometimes, but only when I’m lazy with my shifting, and using the clutch. No false neutrals experienced when using the Ducati quick shifter, i.e. without the clutch. Have less than 2000 miles on it, so I expect the false neutral problem will go away, as it did on the 2012. I think his mirrors were mounted upside down, btw, and yes that was off topic. Menu does take some extra time to make changes, but most changes are overkill. Make a decision and stick with it for several hundred miles. You’ll have forgotten how much time it took to make the changes faster than it took you to read this sentence. Riders are very different in what they like, so it’s great that Ducati provided a way to fine tune YOUR ride. But, again, once you make the changes, you’re set for a long time. Other than a Yamaha MT-10, which is less expensive, what else is in this class. Like the looks of this much more than the Yamaha. And the Yamaha is just another inline 4, so it sounds and feels like any other inline 4, which is great if that’s what you want. The 2012 1100 Evo rides rough, and makes you work all the time. The 2019 is smoother, but you still know you that you are riding a Monster. An inline 4 is smooth like butter, but can be boring, to me at least.

Why all the complaints about his high beams on? In the daytime I have mine on all the time. The daytime running lights on cars are often their high beams on at reduced power, but there are two of them. I think bikes, especially without a fairing, are invisible with only low beams on. Maybe in the cloudy and darker euro zone high beams are not necessary but in Southern California or Arizona low beams are almost useless.

Touch screen not required. Ride the bike. Adam was quite critical of the Monster 1200s and made comments re the appearance. I dont think black does the bike any favours really. Ducati has to be red thats how it is. Put a full termi or sc project exhaust on, dial in your suspension and it becomes a different bike and rather than tootle round for a few miles, go for a longer run, get that engine properly opened up and feel the difference. Sometimes these reviews just arent suitable for the bikes proper potential.

I've been in Southern CA but just business trips, never on 2 wheels, so I spent a lot of time watching this just giving the surroundings a once over. Lots of fancy automobile hardware near Adam's house! I guess you get used to it but the lane splitting/filtering thing just looks effin crazy to this boy from New Jersey. You would not live long here doing that but I get it that drivers don't expect it here either. These bikes seem like a total hoot minus the nits. My 08 Hypermotard is big fun on the back roads here and would make a decent commuter if I didn't work from home. :-)

Here. it is illegal, so the only time I will do it is when traffic goes below about 5 mph (10km/h?)... and even THEN you have to really go slowly and WATCH... covering your brakes. As for false neutrals and hard to get into neutral - you get that in the first 1,000 miles, after that it is fine. Feels like a real bike that needs a real break-in period. As for quality of finish and reliability, beats my 2016 low mileage BMW GSA hands down. The GS shat its electronic rear suspension at 6,000 miles, luckily still under warranty as a replacement unit is 1500 + labour.

I love naked bikes! Ferrari and Lambo do not hide their engines. I own a 2014 Monster 1200 and a 2018 Super Duke 1290r. Able to see the motors. V2 offers both torque and horsepower. Inline 4’s and V4’s do not feel raw too me. Plus their torque is lower because the horsepower is higher in the rev range for the track. Monster keeps its horsepower and torque below 10,000 which makes the engine perfect for the street. Street bikes like the sweet spot(Goldilocks zone, 5000-9500 rpm.

Have an FZ8 now which is a lot more focussed and faster all round. Similar ergos. The 1200s and Tuono are the only bikes i think id swap the 8 for now. I think when folks moved to the Yamaha MT range they forgot what a bike the FZ8 is 😀 faster than tne MT07 and the MT09 probably faster than the MT10 too because you wont be abkerto throw the 10 into the bends like you cam with the 8

Great review, I really love a v twin there are few manufacturers that put them to use. I would really like to see Suzuki bring back the SV1000 just because Japanese bikes are less expensive to maintain and own. H-D 1200 sportster’s are about 12k to purchase and then to get the performance of the Ducati you would have to drop another 7-10k in upgrades. You could get a used one I suppose but I just don’t think you would get the performance that you do from the Ducati. So, at the price point, there is really nothing else out there in a V twin configuration.

High beam on must have startled a few drivers. Commute aside, which is still one of the few content elements that still catch my eye from this channel, there are a few suggestions/ observations that hopefully help (some relate to the actual structure, some just suggestions for the presenter), so please bare with me here: - I still miss some close-ups of the bike in the intro. You stand far from the bike when describing styling details which cannot be conveyed from the distance- get closer to the bike please; - “more small”? I think we can still use “smaller” instead (it is one example, maybe minor, and I understand you need to focus on the riding also, but just a thought); - I understand that wheelie or backing it in were staples of the series, but maybe you can create some of your own; - Too much tongue rolling, mouth wetting (not sure how to call that noise) that is bothering, so please try to minimize as much as possible; - Found the more recent episodes somewhat dry, no real vibe coming through, so maybe it is worth considering a revamp of the series. All in all, as said above, I still prefer this series vs. other contents (scarce to be very honest) but you should aim at making it better. Recent tests were disappointing, so if you want to still generate new views and subscribers here, I think you all need to step it up a notch.

What is the point of reviewing a bike on a commute. Just saying I think the bike would shine on some twisties. 🤙🏼🏍. I love naked bikes and just wondering how this one can handle in the fun stuff. I'm a responsible hooligan.

@@stevenfortier6436 I use my bike as a tool, care very little what it does in the fun stuff. I'm convinced it's more than up to the task than I'll ever be(a mediocre rider).😁 So I happen to see the point. You'll probably be served better by other reviewer's style. NBD, there's plenty of those here(YT).

Jiga Bachi, ya I've always loved the look of the Ducati Monsters and was just more curious about them. I have a 13' Street Triple and love it. Lucky enough to live in northern Utah so we have plenty of canyons and realize we are spoiled up here but can only ride about half the year cause the snow/ favorite roads closed and gated for the winter. Can't wait till spring! That new Ducati Streetfighter looks super awesome though! Way out of my $ means though.

Tons of electronics but the neutral light doesn't even work on a brand new bike. Too much plastic. "Almost not too well proportioned ergonomics".. "It rained heavily last night, but we're going to leave the traction control off" Why? Accessories that create annoying sounds and situations...great... Display is too small and not touch screen... Menu options are via tons of button pushes. Great quick-shifting except when the gears go into "ghostland"... Great question, great question, great question, great question, great question...dude five times...we get it. And all that for $17,600? Forget it.

maximus9401 Pretty sure the Monster 1200 is still $5K less than the Streetfighter V4, and in the past the Monster drastically outsold the Streetfighter. I love the old Streetfighter, but the new one just doesn’t do it for me. I think it’ll come down to whether the consumer is looking for pure performance numbers and is willing to pay for it.
