In this video, I edit Canon EOS R5 10-bit 4K HEVC 4:2:2 footage and Sony A7sIII 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 video at 4K 24fps, 4K 30fps, 4K 60fps, and 4K 120FPS using Final Cut Pro X 10.4.9 and premiere Pro 2020 and Davinci Resolve 16 studio using the 2020 5K iMac with the 10-Core i9 5.0Ghz CPU and AMD 5700XT 16GB.
I didn't test Canon 8K cinema RAW from the EOS R5 because we are waiting for Canon RAW Plugin 2.0 for Final Cut Pro X as its prerelease right now but I will test as soon as I can!

What about the new navi GPU for the Mac Pro? What happens if you opt for 2 of them? What difference does the Xeon CUP vs the 10th gen i9 make in combination with these new Navi GPU’s? What optimisation in the software is still to come (if any) to take better/full advantage of the new Navi GPU’s? What is the next Navi GPU to be released that may be compatible with the Mac Pro?

All you are seing are software optimizations. YOUR iMAC DOES NOT HAVE A 4:2:2 DECODER 10th gen Comet Lake desktop chips don't have the new decoder. They are basically rehashed Skylake. Only mobile Ice Lake chips have the decoder. So don't get your hopes up. For native decoding on desktop you will need 11th/12th gen Intel processors or a new GPU generation aka. RTX 3000

@@chriscarty2514 my iMac (5700xt) did it as well, but only a couple times right after installing / initialising mac os. it hasn't done it since and it's been a few days now. maybe give it some time see if it persists before returning?

B de Graaff I haven’t actually purchased the machine yet and was just about to until I heard about this issue. I wonder if it’s software related and hope it is because if it’s hardware related that’s not good. Please keep me updated on this.

The video shows the bug in the iMac. It has been pointed out that at @0:56 of this video, at the bottom left corner, there is an example of the glitch that is plaguing the 2020 iMac that has the 5700 XT. See this macrumors thread, particularly the post #424 by LadyNinja who detects the flaw happening in Max's video. If you look very carefully at @0:56 in this video, the flash appears in the black margin, about an inch above the bottom of that black region. forums.macrumors.com/threads/imac-2020-5700xt-graphical-glitch.2251034/post-28839291 Max, since you have this in your video footage, you might like to examine the frames, and freeze frame the glitch that flashes briefly at @0:56

Don't Comet Lake chips don't actually have a 4:2:2 decoder. You will have to wait for the 11th gen on desktop

@@rockjano As you can clearly see in the video there is no real decoder at work. Otherwise, everything would be smooth. My guess is that there were just some major software improvements compared to previous tests

@@MegaWeitzel OK possible. So only the Apple Silicon in the iPadPro is capable to decode this 4K 4:2:2 All in footage smoothly because that is capable doing that..and here only the stronger video card and the stronger processor helps somewhat... and some software optimisation...

Thanks! I wouldn't think it would be data rate because it hasn't mattered with hardware decoders as long as you have fast drives but maybe it does it its CPU decoded.

Video on the new Sony Full frame cameras? Would be nice :) Also - Don't forget the Mac Pro is upgradable down the line, so you can pump any all sorts of accelerator cards as you go. That's the big advantage of the Mac Pro after all

Max, For what it's worth. I have the 16 inch 2020 MacBook Pro with the 8Gb 5600M and 8 Core i9 2.3. I have the latest Resolve and FCPX installed. In Resolve with my own 10bit 4.2.2. H.265 Clog from my R5, I get immediate smooth playback in Resolve. Scrubs well also. It runs similar to what I saw in your video. FCPX though is quite choppy. On my 2019 MacPro, 16 Core, Resolve is super smooth with this footage, while FCPX is smooth, but not as zippy as Resolve when scrubbing the timeline. 8K Raw is super smooth in Resolve on both the laptop and the MacPro. Of course FCPX and Canon bricked RAW on the latest FCPX, so I can't try that for now.

I have the same config as yours with 64gb of ram. With the free version of resolve 8k red raw only has decent playback when you select "all video frames". I tested clips from the red site. Do I need studio to get your results? Without "all video frames" selection 8k raw has choppy playback even at 1/4 res. Activity monitor always shows a lot of cpu use but very little gpu. Thanks in advance.

mmaged2287 hi. I have the Studio version. I do know that the free version does not enable the Gpu for decoding and that is a big hit in performance in 4K and 8k video. I am sure it makes a big difference

Thanks for the info. I bought this to future proof as much as possible,, so I wanted to test out 8k raw on this thing. I may have to upgrade to studio. So you are getting smooth playback in full res on 8k in resolve or is it a 4k timeline?

@@mmaged2287 I put it into a 4k timeline on the MacBook. I have a 2019 MacPro 16 core as well, with a 5k monitor. On that machine I can put it into an 8k timeline, and its smooth after its optimized. Never tried an 8k timeline on my Macbook pro though.

Your i9 2020 iMac is suffering from the dreaded 5700XT graphical glitch issue plaguing all such configurations. You can see it in your own video in the 0:55-0:57 time segment in the lower left side of your screen. It is a white line that flashes. DO NOT BUY 2020 IMAC until Apple releases a fix. Macrumors and other forums, as well as many online news sites like 9to5Mac and AppleInsider, have written about this widespread issue. I think you and your brother need to slow down and actually REVIEW these machines. The graphical glitches are a big deal that you never once mentioned in your reviews.

Hey Max, can you touch on streaming performance as well? Not familiar with the necessary specs for a quality stream but interested to know if the iMac can do streaming whilst simultaneously gaming, or live switching cameras/inputs etc. Could you also touch on any thermal throttling issues since the cooling system is the same as previous models? It’s iStat Menus from bjango.com. Have used it for many years. There are many menu bar system monitors, but iStat is one of the few that will show you GPU usage over time.

Do you see any reason to get the 10 core vs the 8 core? Would Luts and graphics added to the video take advantage of the extra 2 cores? I’m curious if After Effects would see any considerable improvements with the additional processing power?

Yea thats the one thing I dislike about these video tests... I mean, its easy for a computer to playback 1 layer of video. How about doing a realistic scenario. 1 layer of 4k video, 10 bit. And 1 layer of titles with animation, and one layer of a lut, also add in transitions like a ripple fade, or swoosh to a another 4k scene. Oh and last but not least 1 layer of audio (music) on top of all that. I think i would be satisfied to see that, instead of being skeptical still...i mean one layer of video is not realistic at all... tell me one video you've made with one layer of video... yawns 🥱

@@DuceLeeTV Almost everything is one layer of video even if you're cutting between it unless your doing picture in picture. In my detailed tests I do use multiple luts and effects just like you would. I'd like to do more but it gets a little tough because I need everything to match between 3 programs. People generally want most high res cams with way more stuff inside .. But where they actually miss out is wheather the editing rig is actually even capable of editing those footages ...and so is the vise versa sometimes

I plan on using an Atomos Ninja V, A7siii, and then edit in ProRes RAW on a Mac Pro with Afterburner... now with more controls for RAW in FCPx... using SLOG3 s gamut 3 cine and one of those Venice LUTs that Bloom talked about.... I would LOVE to see the difference for MAXED mbp 4K60 raw from the Sony A7siii ... between the MAc Pro and iMac 2020.... maybe don't sell that Mac Pro yet and do some more comparisons! With the Afterburner in the Mac Pro surely everything becomes smooth? It better else Apple have an Afterburner / Mac Pro fail on their hands//// With Maxed Yuryev Testing! go for it!

I wonder how the footage would play on a Mac Pro with 2 w5700x I have one w5700x in my Mac Pro and I'm curious . if you have a w5700x in your Mac Pro with the navi the would be a interesting test. I wonder why when the Mac is playing the footage it has so much headroom do you think FCP is optimized properly

@@MaksimYuryev Hey thanks for the footage. My Mac Pro 12core w5700x using FCPX played the Sony footage well. Only the 120fps 10bit hit dropped frames. The Canon on the other hand it could only play the 8bit footage. My Mac could only play the 12bit footage as optimized ProRes files (which is not too bad). My GPU processor was at 60 -90 % playing the Canon files and the gpu memory was almost maxed out, My Cpu only was at 60%. I think I'm getting the Sony cause I have a A6500 and A6300 I do a lot of Multicam to record my performances kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7qCrdVmndeqqWw.html I think I will get the Sony a7sIII with the atmos and use prores raw. I like the Canon Colors but I need Multicam and low light. And I want raw for my music videos for vfx. I wonder if the big navi GPU when they come out will fare better. hmmm

I posted this 3 times under your iMac 2020 videos already. The 10th Gen CPUs used in this are NOT the ones that can decode 4:2:2 hardware accelerated. What you see is awesome performance from the 5700 XT but not at all hardware decoded HEVC 10-bit 4:2:2. You give a pretty bad explanation here and let people think that this works but it doesn't and it can't. This CPU has the same iGPU as the generation before. Just Ice Lake 10th gen has the new iGPU that can decode 4:2:2 10-Bit.

Nvidia Nvenc - the same. No 4-2-2 with HEVC 10-bit www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/hevc-10-bit-4-2-2-via-gtx2060--123007/ With H.264 4:2:2 decode is possibly never going to happen but H.265 4:2:2, the ipad pro can apparently hardware decode as well as those new mobile intel gpu's.

I only have a 2018 6-core, rx 560x MacBook Pro but will still edit the a7siii’s footage in this machine as I‘ll record proxies simultaneously anyway🤷🏻‍♂️ Buying a high end machine just to have a better vision of thr final video is not worth thousands of dollars tbh. The iMac is still a beast btw and I love those tests, keep on that great work👍

You can edit with proxies on most machines but if you're working with graphics, animations, effects that will be rendering 4K on a 4K timeline you still need power for that so it depends on what you're doing and it depends on your financial situation. I would argue that you spend a lot more time editing than shooting and people spend a ton of money on cameras, lenses, lighting, etc. You should also invest into your editing computer.

Hey Max! I Geekbenched my new iMac 2020 8 cores/Radeon 5700XT with an BMD Pro eGPU Vega 56 attached. While my scores are on par with yours at around 60 000 for the 5700XT I was surprised to obtain 72 000 with the Vega! 🤨 How is this possible? “Only” 8 gigs of RAM and 4x PCI Lane over TB3 for the Vega vs 16 gigs of RAM and 16x PCI Lane!

Hey there Max, thanks for the great content! Maybe you can help me with some advice. I‘m looking to buy a Mac that can leverage Multicam editing on FCPX. I‘d love to be able to drop off my Sony 4K footage (mostly 4 up to 8 angles, sometimes even 16) and then start editing without proxies or even optimizing the clips. Is that even possible? And if so, do I need a pro model with afterburner, or is it sufficient to work with the new iMac model? Thanks for your reply!
