I'm fortunate to have 2 Ibis bikes so I would go for the Pivot, the main thing for me is the DW Link suspension, I find it hard to consider anything else after riding this platform.

Thanks for the kind words. Pivot didn't make this bike to Enduro or to slack. I think it's just about the perfect trail bike. So if you love the current switchblade when it comes time to upgrade you'll love the new one!

How dare you make me want to buy another bike! Haha Great video! Dude... I put a new shock on my Ripmo V1. Game changing.. I never got a long with the DPX2 on this bike. Been fine on other bikes. The X2 is such a pain to setup and feels like I need to tinker with it on every trail. This new DVO shock is pretty good. It's much smoother and provides a better relationship between you and the tires. too bad I can only provide one like for your videos! but there, you have it!

Hey, thanks for weighing in. Yeah, I still have not had much opportunity to ride bikes with dvo suspension. I think I wrote a giant trance with dvo, but that's about it. Glad. It's working for you!

I have listened to more and more of your reviews on different bikes. I come to respect your opinions. Choosing a mountain bike as the best is subjective. Both Pivot and Ibis bikes use the DW link so the both climb insane. I personally prefer pivot switchblade looks and performance. Narrowed it two brands. Even then so many brands Yeti, Santa Cruz, Revel, Specialized, etc..thanks Jason.

Based on your weight, a smaller volume spacer may give you a more desired suspension feel on the Switchblade. This is based on a comment from a Pivot employee on MTBR: "This is almost surely due to the SUPER aggressive shock tune we're using. There's a 0.6cu in spacer in the air can that gives the bike that very progressive ramp up at the end. We specced it this way so that you can ride it very hard and not have any harsh bottom outs, but if you're finding that your sag is spot-on and you're not getting full travel, just swap to a smaller volume spacer. I ride pretty light/smooth (read: wimpy), so I swapped to a 0.4, and it made big difference. I imagine some of our non-dad-bod riders might benefit from a 0.2, and some of the lightest guys and gals out there may prefer no spacer at all."

I'm revisiting this review/comparison since yesterday I demo'd this identical model Switchblade when I took my V1 Ripmo in to have my rear wheel respoked! I took it on my local trails here in the SF Bay Area CA. Right away I felt like I was riding a Ripley since it pedaled so easy - I was very surprised! It had Lyrik/Deluxe RS suspension and it had DT swiss alloy wheelset. I agree, it pedaled/climbed a bit better than my Ripmo. In terms of descending, I felt the stability was better on my Ripmo. Lately, I been thinking of something that is a good compromise between the Ripley/Ripmo. And it seems I found it in the SWB!..LOL. However, I don't think the pedaling/climbing difference is big enough to justify switching teams! And really like how the Ripmo descends and overall liveliness. I also realized, these days weight is irrelevant! For example, although my Ripmo has the S35 carbon wheelset it weighs more than the SWB. But that extra weight is actually a bonus since it contributes to being able to balance the bike better in techy sections ( rock gardens, cornering, etc.) and it is more planted which does help overall, seems to get better traction. I've heard that Rockshox current design is among the best these days which I always thought the opposite. On my Ripmo I have a Factory 36 and the X2 and thought this was among the best suspension out there although it adds weight to the bike and the adjusting is a bit more technical than the performance level ( I do question if all those adjustments are necessary?). The RS setup on the SWB seemed minimalist and streamlined compared to Fox factory and it seemed great to me. Anyway, looking forward to your response on this! Thanks.

Would you expect if you put a couple volume spacers in the Switchblade it would have more of the poppy trail feel of the Ripmo?

Honestly, that is exactly what I need. If I had someone who has more like 185 lb writing a size large or extra-large do it at a lot of depth to my review and give more people out there a greater perspective of how the bikes feel for different Riders.

That custom DPX2 on the Switchblade is legit! However lighter riders could benefit from a smaller volume spacer than .6

I unfortunately didn't get the time or opportunity to swap out volume spacers on either bike. The Ibis felt good out of the box. And yeah, I could see how changing the shock tune a little bit or a smaller spacer might do wonders for a lighter Rider.

Did the SWITCHBLADE have handlebars that were larger diameter/thicker too stiff and that is why it felt harsher? How about wheels and tires, and tire pressure?

Honestly, I think the rebel Rascal fits right in between the new switchblade and ripmo. It has that real stable supportive feeling but it's still pretty Nimble and Lively. It's a very cool bike.

I love your reviews, always super informative and I like how you delve into how bikes feel as much as how they perform. I've got a chance to pick up a 1 year old used Pivot Switchblade Pro XT/XTR build with carbon wheels and i9 hydra hubs for the same price as a new Ibis Ripmo V2 SLX with ibis wheels. I was set on a Ripmo but the bikes seem very similar and it's hard to argue against the better kit on the Pivot. Which would you buy if you were in my shoes?

It's not so popular and might be difficult for you to get your hands on one of them but I would really love it and I'm sure many others would as well. Couple of important points.. You can run 27.5 on the Switchblade and have two different bikes with another wheelset if you so choose. You can run a coil shock on the Ripmo if that's your jam. Btw Jason, I'd love to get your thoughts on the Orbea Occam if you can get your hands on one.

Just rode the ripmo v2 and switchblade back to back and no question that the Pivot is the preferred bike. The Ibis just didn’t feel controlled or stable. I’d give the ibis 6.5/10 and Pivot 9.5/10.

Today I would take the SB140 LR over both of these trail bikes…. Plus Chris at Salt Cycles has the Yeti SB140’s on sale right now! Give him a call for options on a custom build and special pricing. # 801-943-8502 also, the ripmo now has a fox 38 fork and X2 shock🤮 it’s horrible for the ripmo… if you go with the Ripmo have Chris swap out the suspension for a 36 and Float X shock. You’ll be glad you did!!

hey j, did that ripmo v2 have XTR brakes? if so, did you have any front rotor rub or was it silent during your testing so far? seems like my ripmo with XTR rubs a tiny bit, tried adjusting it but seems like there so very little space between pads/rotor.

Yes, XTR 4-piston brakes. They seem just fine and normal to me. I've been riding XTR brakes for the past year on my other bikes.

Nice comparison! Very interesting that two bikes, both DW link have distinct personalities. I like that you make the distinctions between smaller and larger riders. As a 6 footer, I would likely lean to the Pivot for the better climbing and stiffer frame. I basically made a similar call by taking a Tallboy over a Ripley, in my case it was because I still want to hit stuff pretty hard, but I also like the durability and free small part replacement offered by SC, since I tend to keep bikes for 3,000+ miles. Keep up the great work! PS my brother owns 3 Ibis bikes and I don't want to be a copy cat and have the same bikes as him...

@@mtbyumyum .... and here i am thinking 5'8" isnt small! Im 5'3" with disproportionately short legs and solid build. I ride a medium frame bike but can only use about 50mm of dropper post. There are plenty of tall bike reviewers about but ive yet to find any truely short male (heavier) reviewers.

@MTB yumyum the sb150 and v2 ripmo have very similar geometry and travel numbers. Do they feel very different?

Yes, they feel pretty different. The sb150 is more stable and composed at higher speeds. It just wants to smash and eat everything in his way. The ripmo still feels agile and fun on slower trails. . The ripmo would make the better trail bike in my opinion.

I demoed the V1 Ripmo and did not like it going downhill. I felt like I was going to do a header on all the jumps when I landed, It was way too squirly and had to slow down a lot . Climbed like a goat though..I bought a Hightower and love it.

Interesting. I've ridden the v1 Ripmo and new HT back-to-back a few times and never felt that way although the HT does descend really well and feels bottomless

Good review Jason. You kept saying Ripley so I got confused if you were actually talking about the Ripmo. The Ripmo vs the Yeti sb150 is a really close set up (150 v 147 rear 170 v 160 front) I have the sb150 now but was considering swapping to the Ripmo, just need to demo the v2. I love the sb150, just hung up on the extra maintenance

thanks! Yeah, a good compramize between high rolling xc ish and full on traction DH style for me has been the 2.4 Rekon up front and 2.35 Ardent Race on the back. Rolls fast, has good traction and okay protection. I've been happy with it for general trail use. Remember though, I have 2 bikes and my other bike for the super gnarly terrain with slower rolling higher traction and protection tires.... good luck!

Love the channel and what Jason is doing. But not sure this is the best comparison Ripmo V2 v Switchblade V2. The Switchblade they tested has live valve which is a different damper front and rear. It’s not the special DPX2 that Pivot worked on with Fox for the new Switchblade. Also live valve fork doesn’t have the GRIP2 damper. It’s an electronic version of the FIT damper. The live valve switchblade may also climb better than the non-live valve one. But who knows. Hardly anyone is going to buy the live valve switchblade because they cost like 10K+. Would have been better to test the non-live valve Switchblade versus the Ripmo. That would be a more direct comparison between bikes that people might actually buy - both with DPX2 shocks and GRIP2 forks. “The Live Valve system doesn’t work with the new Grip2 cartridge or with a DPX2 or Float X2 shock. The suspension is based on the previous Fit4 cartridge on the fork and DPS technology on the shock.” enduro-mtb.com/en/fox-live-valve-review/

Thank you for weighing in, I'm sure most people who read this will find it useful. I was not aware of the different dampers. It definitely feels like a more stiff sturdy ride then the ripmo. And after what you said, I'm guessing some of it is attributed to the live valve system. Again, Thank you!

Like the review, but... The new Ripmo v2 is an enduro bike while the Pivot Swtchblade is real a 'trail/all mountain' bike with 'enduro like' capabilities... I'd rather see the ripmo matched up against the firebird 29... Travel aside, the Geo and design characteristics aren't quite a direct comparison. Like to hear your thoughts on that...

Interesting. The Firebird 29, Yeti SB150 and Megatower all feel like bigger bikes than the new Ripmo... I guess I'd need to ride them all back to back and see....

With these back to back tests, are you and your co-rider making any suspension setup adjustments? I think a lot of the "feel" can be changed with even some minor tweaking of rebound/compression and I don't think I've ever heard you mention that you've made any changes to them at all, or maybe you are making adjustments and just not talking about it?

Always tinkering with air, compression and rebound till it feels right for the trail... then adjust as need when terrain changes. Tyler and I happen to be the exact same weight.

I would love to demo a ripmo, but there just isn't any dealers around me. I also make myself feel pressured to buy from my l.b.s and they don't sell ibis. Shop has helped me out so much I feel committed to do business with them, you know what I mean? I think the choices there aren't to bad though, yeti, specialized, pivot, norco, and transition.

Yeah, I completely understand where you're coming from. Especially if the local bike shop has been super awesome to you. I've had to make decisions in the past to buy the bike. I really want even though my bike shop didn't have it nearby. And in the end I was happy to try something new, but I usually end up going back to the bike shop that I prefer in the end.

Great reviews as always. Would be great if you could get a big guy to test the same bikes as well. I’m 6’5” 235 rtr, I want a trail bike that climbs and descends. I’m not into big drops but do enjoy some slow speed chunk and high speed flow. I was thinking Ripley with a 140 or Ripmo or Switchblade. Thoughts?

Yeah, you bring up a good point. You're a very different Rider than me and might find a different experience on any given bike than I would. With that said, my buddy who is 6'5" 220 is currently building up a Ripley with a pike 140 on the front....

MTB yumyum I’d like to hear your buddy’s thoughts on the Ripley when he gets a few miles on it. Very hard to find any bike reviews carried out by tall heavy guys. There could be a real opportunity to add a large guys review to your channel. The stiffness of the switchblade makes it very appealing along with the climbing ability. If you consider power to weight ratio a great climbing bike for a big guy is a real asset.

10 times out of 10 I’ll go with the switchblade. I’m not a downhill guy and pivots have always felt how I think a bike should feel.

@@mtbyumyum they're bikes are just too good and too pretty. It's just perfect for my everything use: climb all day, descend all day. And im a CA local, got to support my local brands. Though I wouldn't mind having that Pivot if it was in the budget. Incredibly stable bike, and pretty straight lines

Honestly, I'd be super stoked at the Rascal as my only bike. I don't know that I'd take it over the ripmo, I'd actually like to ride them both back to back. That said I would place it squarely between the switchblade and the ripmo after riding these back-to-back.

Would it be fair to say that since the Ripmo V1 and V2 are so similar that if you were to compare the Ripmo V1 to the Switchblade, you would end up with similar results as your comparison here? According to the geometry numbers the V2 Ripmo is longer than V1, I assume you didn't notice any extra length in wheelbases amongst any of the bikes? Still no pedal strikes? As always, thanks for the in depth reviews.

Yeah, the original ripmo had more similar geometry to this new switchblade, but still, they're different bikes. I actually ended up writing the original remote on the same day that I filmed at these two bikes. I would say both ripmo are more playful and Poppy than the switchblade regardless of the geometry changes.

And yeah, pedal strikes was a non-issue and no concern on the new ripmo. I think I got one or two on the entire day between all three bikes.

Really depends on the trails you like to ride and how fast you like to descend. For me, the best bang for your buck bike is the Ibis Ripley... Fun factor off the charts, climbs really well, descend good enough for the rate of speed I want to go down hill and can handle a wide variety of trails and terrain.... extremely rewarding bike to own and ride! I love mine!

Absolutely. For a 140+mm bike it climbs exceptionally well. With the right tire setup this could be a great 3-4 hour do everything all day type of bike

Nice review. I love my Ripmo v1 and run it around some chunky stuff in San Diego/SoCal. No looking back for me (riding an XL frame and VERY happy with the climbing capability and its ability to handle very tough terrain). Not sure I agree that you are "just an average rider" however........... :) keep up the good work.

Still on the fence. Ripley or Ripmo. Tons of snow here in north central Vermont so going to be a while to demo. I know I’ll like either but they are so different. What do you think of a set of 2.6 Rekon’ s on either of the Ibis bikes?

I'm currently running a 2.4 Rekon on the front of my Ripley and love it. Between the two I could go either direction. Honestly just depends on how fast you want to ride and what type of terrain you ride most of the time. Good luck!

I run a Forcaster 2.6 in the front and 2.4 rekon in the rear on my Ripmo and that works pretty well. The forkaster handles a little greasy mud much better than a rekon. Sadly I think the 2.6 rekon is too wide for the rear. It fits but if you get into any mud at all or some big g-outs it will rub. 2.4 fits nice.

Ardent Race 2.35 I feel like it's the best traction to weight ratio for light duty xc stuff. Not a lot of braking power though

Well I pulled the trigger... but I ended up with the 2019 Ripmo. The new Ripmo and the Ripley were really so far apart in terms of travel/capability that I decided to go a little less enduro and a little more trail friendly for my tight twisty Vermont trails. I’m not a super aggressive rider but like a capable bike as I do some lift access few times a year. I got the Factory fork and a full SLX build for $4k. I think that’s a great bike at a great price.

The recommended sizing is different between the bikes, medium for Pivot says 5'8" to 5'11" whereas for the Ibis is 5'4-5'9" for the medium. It seems like this would factor in the maneuverability and ride feel. You are at the very bottom of the medium on Pivot and could even ride a small. On the Ibis you are getting towards the top of the scale, that's probably going to make the bike feel more playful? Just speculating, as I don't really understand how these companies figure out these sizes. I noticed the new Ibis has almost identical numbers for (stack, reach and top tube) to the Yeti SB130, but that bike has a size range that is closer to 5'5 to 5'11 (165-180 cm).

Jason, I noticed that you talk about the Switchblade getting "hung up" here, but not in the Switchblade review, or the Switchblade vs Rascal comparison, where I believe you rode aluminum rather than carbon rims. How do you feel that aluminum vs carbon rims affect the ride of the Switchblade, and do you think carbon is worth it?

These are 2 of my biggest contenders; thanks for the comparison. I've been watching a ton of your videos. I am looking for a trail bike to handle some rocky, rooty NE territory, but still be agile, and a good climber. Standover height is very important to me, and the biggest reason I want to sell my 2015 Niner RIP 9 size medium with a 750mm standover height. I find that this really limits my ability to comfortably take on technical sections, and to avoid crashing when I need to get off the bike quickly. I am about 5ft 9in and 215 lbs. Being a shorter rider, what bike would you suggest? I am most likely between the Ripmo, Ripley, Trail 429, Switchblade, Tallboy or Hightower, or Revel Rascal, and I also found the Propain interesting. Finally, I'm considering an e-bike; probably the Pivot Shuttle. My maintenance skills are just ok. Thanks!

For all of you asking which bike should buy, get off You Tube and go demo some bikes. It’s the only way to tell how a bike will work for you both from a cockpit feel and ride performance. Mr Yum Yum does a nice job telling us how the latest and greatest work for him and I appreciate his channel. Even if you have to rent a bike to demo it’s well worth it considering how much you will spend on a full purchase and the maintenance. I did this in 2015 and it cost me several hundred dollars. I ended up on a used Ibis Mojo HDR 27.5 demo bike after trying several others. In 2018 I demo’d a Ripmo v1 on a 20 mile ride in Tahoe City. By mile 5 I was coming up with ways to pitch the purchase to my wife. Bought a Ripmo and sold the Mojo. The Ripmo is the most capable, comfortable and fun bike I have ever ridden. It may not be the bike for you and that is fine. Or you might love it. At least you will know if you demo it and some others.

Yes, I completely agree. There is no substitution for getting out and riding multiple bikes that you're interested in. I just try to help those who need a second opinion or have no access to the bike in the first place.

The more I hear about the Ripmo the more disappointed I am that the aluminum version came out a month after I bought my Marin Hawk Hill 3. I just wish they spec'ed it with the SLX drivetrain for $3k instead of NX.

Thanks, I find your reviews interesting. You are 5'8 and 140 lbs? For me, I am 6' and 225, perfer to hear reviews from big guys who ride these bikes. Myself and friends ride some of these carbon bikes and you get pops and fatigued sounds when riding, like somethings going to break. Unfortunately you are much smaller, what you say is for guys your size. I do like your reviews on types of gear. No offense.
