Adventure motorcycles are choice do-it-all solutions for motorcycle riders who want to venture off the beaten path. And for those seeking a lighter and more manageable adventure bike, one with serious off-road chops, KTM presents its 790 Adventure R ($13,699). This R-spec model adds heavy-duty suspension and a few other tweaks designed to make life more accommodating when the going gets rough.
--
The R-Spec 790 is powered by KTM’s recently released 799cc LC8c parallel twin. This ultra-compact engine features an unique bottom end setup and engine firing order designed to emulate KTM’s signature 75-degree LC8 V-twin.
This affords good torque feel off the bottom with upwards of 50 pound-feet torque from 3,500 rpm. Top-end power-wise, the LC8c engine pumps out 85.4 hp at 8,230 rpm. This twin has a pleasing character and exhaust note, with just the right amount of engine vibration. You know you’re at the helm of a KTM. A underslung and generous capacity 5.3-gallon fuel tank feeds the engine and gives a range of nearly 200 miles.
A highly customizable electronics suite lets you tailor the 790’s powertrain from mild to wild. Of the four settings (Street, Off-road, Rain, and Rally), we preferred Rally mode since it offers the most aggressive power delivery. We also valued the ability to independently tweak ABS (Off-road setting was our favorite both on the street and dirt) and the on-the-fly adjustable slip (wheelspin) control. Curiously, heated grips aren’t standard, however the OE-fitted hand guards provide a degree of protection from chilly air.
A 5-inch color TFT display serves as the rider’s command center. While replete with information, menu navigation is clunky and the fonts could be larger. Still we appreciate the ability to activate “dark mode” (white characters on a black background). Bluetooth connectivity is another welcome feature, allowing you to pair your phone and Bluetooth-enabled headset to the motorcycle for on-screen navigation and music control. Still, we hope KTM replaces this older display with the new and ultra-slick setup employed on the 2020 1290 Super Duke R.
On the road, we love the 790’s cozy ergonomics package. The cockpit is accommodating for a 6-foot-tall rider and the standard 790 Adventure’s tall clear windscreen wasn’t missed. Instead the R model’s tinted fly screen provides effective protection, even in its lowest setting. The height is adjustable, however it requires an Allen wrench (included in the tailsection’s tool kit).
More adjustability comes in the form of handlebar position (fore and aft), clutch and brake levers, as well as the rear brake pedal. As opposed to the standard model’s adjustable rider height two-piece seat, the R model uses a fixed single-piece component. This design makes it easier to slide back and forth when navigating challenging terrain.
Suspension-wise the 790 R benefits from a larger-diameter enduro-style Xplor WP fork. In addition to tool-less compression and rebound damping adjusters, the suspension includes a twist-style three-way preload lever, so riders can tweak the spring tension, based on weight, terrain, or riding preference. Handy red wipers visually demonstrate fork travel so you can adjust preload accordingly.
Rear suspension duties are handled by a four-way-adjustable PDS-type shock mounting directly between frame and swingarm. In total the 790 R has 9.4 inches of suspension travel-0.7 inch more than the standard model.
The 470-pound KTM handles beautifully on and off pavement. Simply put, 21-inch front, 18-inch rear wheel-equipped ADV bikes shouldn’t handle this well on asphalt. The suspension glides over rough pavement yet has enough damping support when loaded with the dual radial-mount Brembo front disc brakes. The OE-fitted Bridgestone Battlax Advenurecross AX41 tires have a surprising level of bite against asphalt yet deliver acceptable grip over dry hard-packed surfaces.
If there was room for only one motorcycle in the garage, KTM makes a strong argument for that spot. The 790 impresses with its cozy manner around town. Yet when it’s time to gear up and head out of the city it eagerly complies. Factor in its fantastically capable enduro-style suspension and highly customizable electronic and chassis components and you have a practical motorcycle that’s up for most any adventure.

by the way: The Tires, especially in new condition will enduce a wooble in the Fort at about 100 mp/h The leaking transmission shaft seal is just KTM using way to much lubrication-fat on the chain - on first ride the suff gets warm and dripps of the drive sprocket. The fuel gage is not very accurate, due to form of the tank which is bassically a flask with a very wide bottom. From full to half full you cannot trust the gage and the lower the fuel gets the more off the fuel gauge gets when the bike is leaing on its stand. The 790 Adventure platform is not your typically 700-950 cc road-enduro. Especially if you used to such bikes, this KTM feels more like a naked bike with big weels and a Windscreen. That means that the 790 adventure platform is not only the first "Adventure" bike that is absolutely comforable offroad, but also the first real option for people who don`t like the heavy feel of "common" adventure bikes.

Correction on the fuel tank, it is not inaccurate from full to 1/2 tank, the gauge is actually a 1/2 gauge tank meaning it is full bars until it reaches 1/2 empty, then it begins to lower relatively accurately. Early reviews were getting it wrong. It reads this way due to the vertical length of the tank sense they lowered the mass to lower the center of gravity which actually works; the bike feels lighter at speed than its 417# dry weight

Thank you guys for the useful review! 790 Adv R is always presented like an ultimate dirt bike and is really hard to get idea how does the bike do daily, street, on road, travelling etc. things, which is typical purpose of adv bikes rather than hard enduro. To know bike's desert skills is quite useful, but there is no fuc... desert in the whole Europe. KTM produces a lot of more suitable bikes for pure off road. So thaks again for on road skills info as well.

I have a son who lives in Eugene and I kind of want to ride it out to see him and site see along the way, on and off-road, and back? Or do you recommend a 1090, 1190, or 1290? For the most part I will be riding it around town and statewide in MN. Thank you in advance.

If you can afford the R get it. If KTM only built the R, People would say it's to expensive. If they only built the adventure people would complain about not having fully adjustable off road capable suspension. KTM pleased both groups. I think they may need to do the same with the 390 adventure. An R would have explore suspension and wire wheels. But would cost as much if not more than a 690 enduro R.

ok holy fuck, that's outrageous. As @erk_speed states, here in the EU manufacturers are indeed required by law to give a two year warranty, but naively I would've thought that manufacturers wouldn't handle this issue that much different in the states. but a one year warranty on just the mechanics is a fucking joke. why would anyone buy a new KTM in the USA? Just looked it up, this is what KTM USA quotes fit for warranty: lll. PARTS COVERED BY THE WARRANTY This warranty covers only the engine, frame and swingarm. No other components of the motorcycle are covered by any warranty, expressed or implied and are sold “as is”. The frame is defined under this warranty as the main frame only of the motorcycle. The engine is defined under this warranty as parts, which are housed within the engine crankcase, including shafts, gears, and shifting mechanism. In addition to the engine crankcase, the warranty covers the crankshaft and ignition system. KTM North America, Inc. will repair or replace, at its option, any of these parts that are found to be defective in material or workmanship subject to the limitations of this warranty. *except* "Normal wear components, including but not limited to, the following: piston and piston ring, Nikasil cylinder coating, all bearings, all seals, all clutch components, transmission gear engagement “dogs”, final-drive chain and sprockets, brake components, suspension valving, carburetor jetting, and filter elements." That's embarrasing.

Adam, if you're actually reading this, and if you're getting tired of all the comments about your hair "style": set up a gofundme page for a charity of your choice, set a goal, and when that number is reached, go get a haircut and make a video of you handing the check to that charity.
