I enjoyed the video. Very professionally done and the car looks great too. I drive a full electric but there have been times I've been uncomfortably low on juice. Until the charging infrastructure catches up this looks like a great option. Not since the Vauxhall Ampera have we seen a PHEV do over 40 miles in full EV mode. Impressive!

I'd love one of these with it's high electric-only mode range for a plug-in hybrid. Can't afford one now, but maybe by the time I can a newer model will be out with an even higher electric range! Imagine a 120 km+ range on the electric motor with a passenger and a few bags with a petrol engine and fuel tank to take over when you go even further! If it would take sacrificingthe size and power of the internal combustion engine then I'd be happy with that!

Excellent review - I've only recently discovered your videos and they're great! I love the idea of a hybrid and the a250e looks great. My question is though, when you are on a longer journey (i.e. far greater than the electric range), what power output in bhp do you have? I know it's a 215bhp vehicle, but when the electric battery is empty and running on petrol alone, does the power output drop? Thanks!
@LandLAutomotive
@LandLAutomotive 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! In every drive mode, putting your foot all the way down will deliver maximum power from the engine and electric motor. The motor and engine together will deliver the maximum combined output until the battery reaches 0%. When it is at 0% charge or showing 0 miles of electric driving range, the electric motor will still help out by delivering brief bursts of power when required but it will be the engine doing most of the work to accelerate. I recently did an 80ish mile round trip with around 20% charge in the battery and spent most of the drive running on the engine. When accelerating gently or needing to get up to speed a little quicker the car's displays were showing that the hybrid system was providing assistance long after reaching 0% charge and the engine was still able to switch off when coasting to a stop. In short, 158 bhp is always the maximum available from the engine, with the peak combined output available for as long as the battery has charge. When at 0 miles electric range there is still short term assistance available from the battery. It's a car and powertrain that has a lot to offer and is well worth spending some time with! For longer drives where the route is longer than the electric range I tend to do low speed driving and getting up to speed on the electric motor before switching to Battery Level to run on the engine along the motorway and preserving the remaining charge level for when I get to the next low speed section. This video taught us a lot and ended up setting the format for our "living with" videos. I'm glad you enjoyed this one!

Does the a250e have radar cruise control and emergency brake assist as standard? I can't seem to find a definitive answer in the literature.
@LandLAutomotive
@LandLAutomotive 4 жыл бұрын
Every A-Class comes equipped with Active Emergency Braking and Active Lane Keeping Assist as standard - this helped the A-Class to be the safest small family car tested by Euro NCAP in 2018. The A250e gets a radar based recuperation system which will intelligently regenerate and slow the car down depending on factors such as proximity to traffic and when approaching roundabouts. This can be activated by selecting Eco mode through Dynamic Select or DAUTO when driving in electric only mode. The intelligent radar based recuperation system does not, however, function when the cruise control is engaged. For the radar guided cruise control Active Distance Control DISTRONIC as well as Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Assist and many more intelligent features then select the brilliant Driving Assistance Package.

I went from a ford focus 1L turbocharged engine that gave 120HP.. it wasnt bad at all, great fuel economy but when following my friends with expensive cars, i could not match their aggressive accelerations when we are overtaking other cars on long road trips.. @LandLAutomotive
@LandLAutomotive 4 жыл бұрын
The car can charge itself whilst driving - whenever you lift off the accelerator or apply the brakes the car will harvest energy to put it back in the battery. The car can be driven on the petrol engine alone. The sunroof brings more light into the cabin and is as well isolated as the side windows. When open a wind deflector pops up automatically to keep cabin noise to a minimum.

If the car has no charge, what would be the fuel efficiency (mpg) of the petrol engine?
@LandLAutomotive
@LandLAutomotive 4 жыл бұрын
The car is designed for optimum efficiency when running in tandem with the hybrid system. It all depends on how you drive it - every time you lift off the accelerator the car will harvest energy and has the ability to recharge the battery directly from the engine. Keep in mind that by far the most efficient way to top up the battery is to plug the car in for as little as 3 hours 20 minutes to gain maximum electric driving range.

Well it has the same petrol engine in it as the A200... but its about 250kg heavier than that model so subtract a few mpg off the stated economy of the A200 in that case, although even if you don't plug it in it will get regen from breaking etc so it will probably offset the extra weight in town driving but on the motorway it will be worse off.
@RocketLR
@RocketLR 2 жыл бұрын
Was it really a good idea to have the electric motor go through the transmission as well? isnt that just an extra thing that will wear out instead of just having the electric motors directly apply force to the wheels? Or is that because these electric motors cant shift their magnetic polarities(or whatever its called) like the tesla electric engines? For example, due to the magnetic properties of different types of electric engines, one is good for slow and heavy rotations while another is good for fast and lighter rotations? So im guessing that the electric engines here are the second type that does light but fast rotations thus the reason it goes through the transmission so that it can roll the car when its standing still? Im a wanna be geek so if im way out of line, thats why..
@LandLAutomotive
@LandLAutomotive 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. The positioning of the motor is a mixture of packaging and operational requirements. As well as feeding power to the wheels, the electric motor acts as the starter for the engine so no 12v starter is required. The motor being able to spin the engine to life when required is a big part of the seamless transition from electric drive to petrol power. Additionally, the motor being housed between the engine and the box means that there is more space at the rear of the car for the large battery, fuel tank, power electronics, etc. Some other products like the Range Rover Evoque plug-in hybrid have the engine and electric motor separated with the engine on one axle and the electric motor on the other. There are lots of different solutions appearing across the market; coupling the electric motor to the 8-speed transmission means that the two sides of the powertrain can work seamlessly together but sending the electric drive through a multi-gear transmission will always incur more transmission losses than going through a single speed. As for regeneration - the motor is used to harvest energy to return it to the battery, the energy used to rotate the wheel can be used to slow the car down and the car's brake by wire system will decide how much stopping force can be done with the motor before engaging the disc brakes. There isn't much info about whether it is reversing the polarity of the motor or not...a little more digging may be needed there but the motors used for the A 250 e are permanently excited AC synchronous motors. Generally speaking, electric motors are much more efficient at lower speeds and develop their peak power and torque pretty much from a standstill. This contrasts with the peak efficiency, torque and power output of the engine coming at higher speeds. This is why electric ranges can drop at motorway speeds whereas the fuel consumption will improve at a high speed cruise. Additionally, the car will always send a little bit of power to either the engine or the motor to allow it to creep forward or backwards at low speeds. Have a look at the energy flow menu on the central screen or the driver's display next time you set off or park up! I'm still learning about the different types of motor, how they work and where the magnetic wizardry fits into it. I do hope this helps!

The battery is able to charge at a rate of up to 7kW. This is three times faster than charging from a domestic socket. DC charging is unlikely for this model as the battery has a 10.6 kWh capacity. For models with larger batteries which take a little longer to charge on a 7kW wallbox we are seeing rapid charging capability being introduced.

@Rick54K 4 жыл бұрын
@@0xyg3n maybe I can help here. There are two types of ways that engines recharge batteries. One is the one like the BMW i3 had which is that the petrol engine never drives the wheels but only charges the batteries....which is very inefficient but it gets you home. The other way is like this car does. It drives the wheels as well as the electric motor. This self charging terminology is marketing talk only. However when you brake in a straight hybrid, a plug in hybrid or even a full EV when you lift off the accelerator the friction generated as the car slows charges the battery. This is the beauty of a plug in...you can fill your batteries up before you set off. In a straight hybrid, you might have enough battery to drive the first couple of miles but then you're on to the engine very quickly. Keep the battery charged by plugging in and you won't need to fill up. Use solar and fill it up for nothing!

@LandLAutomotive
@LandLAutomotive 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. The car will always base its projected range on a mixture of charge level, ambient temperature and past energy consumption/driving style; it does this in order to give you the most accurate range estimate possible. The one thing it cannot predict is how much energy will be recovered on the journey ahead; with regenerative braking feeding energy back into the battery you may well see that not every mile driven is a mile's worth of energy used. Give the D AUTO regeneration setting a try when in the fully electric drive mode. Using pre-entry climate control when the car is plugged in is a great way to get energy flowing through the battery to bring it up to its optimum operating temperature before you depart. Additionally, check the trip computer from reset - this will show your average energy consumption in miles per kWh. Resetting this will make the car recalculate your projected range based on your new energy consumption. Most importantly we do hope you are enjoying your new A 250 e!

May I also ask is it normal if the battery is fully charged, and the car is not driven for a number of days (6 to be precise) that the battery drains itself? Had it at 100% and came back to it after travelling away, to 2% Thanks again
@LandLAutomotive
@LandLAutomotive 3 жыл бұрын
@@Triggerni1 It is natural for batteries to drain over time - from memory the EQC can lose up to 1% per day when left alone under certain conditions. This is mostly to do with ambient temperature fluctuating over the course of a day which can directly influence the ability of the cells to maintain their energy content. However, that is with a battery around eight times larger. The smaller battery in the A 250 e may exacerbate this effect as losing 1% of 10.6kWh will be more noticeable than 1% of 80kWh. Keep an eye on it. For general battery health, if the high voltage battery drops to 0% charge it is recommended that it is fully charged again within 14 days of running dry. There is some more information for best practices in the owner's manual and in the battery certificate/warranty document which can be found here: www.mercedes-benz.co.uk/passengercars/being-an-owner/warranty/warranty-explained.module.html

First impressions are very easy to recognize, engine and technogia hybrida dacia renault, but that if at the price of premium mercedes benz, with a ridiculous car, which does not exceed in pure electric or 50 km, more expensive, delicate heavy and with an absurd technogia that the only thing that is used is to get the famous eco label, better a mid hybrid and with an automatic change of torque converter more effective less problematic less breakdowns etc but that Mercedes Benz refuses to take out and prefers to sell better the double transmissions Enbrage that they run out, and renault engines and technologies, he buys them at a bargain price and they sell them at a premium price, with more Chinese internal parts, each day losing more prestige and quality, etc.

Glad you cleared that up! Marvellous use of words - pity they don't make any sense.

I feel that the plug in and hybrid powered cars are doomed as they will be in the same category as petrol/diesel cars heading up to 2030 when all cars will be full electric /hydrogen powered.
