After asking viewers what they'd like to see on the show, they told us they'd like to see a modern vehicle without all the tassels and features - a barebones vehicle. To start with, Zack picked a more inexpensive car with a good warranty.

I bought a Mirage brand new in 2014. It had 14 miles on it. The car now has 162,000 miles on it and has needed NOTHING other than routine maintenance. Never even a check engine light. It ain't fast. It ain't pretty. But it is cheap, economical, and EXTREMELY reliable.

I'm 50 years old; I want this car because it reminds me of my first car. If you look up Mitsubishi "Space Star," you will find European reviews of this car which are pretty fair. They go 160 kph on the autobahn and never complain about the lack of power.

+1 I'm 56 and just bought one out the door for $13.1K for a rural commute sans interstate. After studying and considering this car for two years, it started to become my dream car. I finally got a 5-speed in Silver Nov 30, 2020. My first car that was my own was a 1978 Datsun B-210 with aftermarket black louvers on the back glass. I wanted to go back to basics for the next decade. After my trade, I financed $5,700. Payment is $93 for 72 months. I'll have it paid off in 24. It's sort of crude, but that's part of it's appeal, just like the 90s style door handles, 14" wheels, and 43+ mpg for my commute.

I’m glad to see so many positive reviews. The Mirage is a great little car. I purchased a 2019 & it’s been more of a back up than a daily driver because I was trying to save some mileage and winter wear & tear on it while driving my 2002 Echo. Well, with almost 300k on the Toyota, a buddy asked if I’d like to sell it & so I decided to. With the exception of a rather flat first gear, the Mirage is a great little car. And I concur with others here... what could you possibly need besides what comes standard on this vehicle? Power windows, locks, mirrors, cruise, rear wiper & defrost & a great little entertainment & backup screen combo. One improvement I’ve added was some MTX, 6 & 1/2” speakers to replace the stock ones & I’m planning on adding Dynamat or some comparable product which should quiet down the road & engine noise a little. I drive 190 miles per day so, I’m shooting for 300k & I plan that I’ll still be driving it when I retire.

@@andrew7650 Hey there. Well, my response isn’t as simple as it should be. My wife had some vehicle issues & took over the Mirage for a while. It was a constant fight to get her to keep it the way I would. Well one day I saw she’d been using it as a little wagon & that the drivers side rear door had a gouge in it. So, I committed to trade it in on a newer one as it had been my first “new car” purchase. After looking over the redesign of the 2021/22s, I really liked the redesigned nose & upholstery so much more than my 2019, that it became an upgrade I wanted to make. So I did. I now have a 2022 in Mercury Grey. Now, I don’t know what Mitsubishi did to it but, it’s definitely quieter than the 2019 & maybe it’s all in my mind but, it just feels a little more refined all the way around. I really like it. So what did the old one have on it for mileage? I don’t remember exactly but, it seems like it was in the mid 20s. You have to keep in mind I was still driving the Echo for some of that time. As for my liking it as a daily driver… I clearly enjoyed it, as I bought another one. Something that has helped me enjoy the Mirage more than anything else was watching a guy on KZfaq that explained the engine dynamics of that 3-banger & that you really need to get it above 3k to enjoy the engine. He was right. I always felt like it was so gruff above 3k that I didn’t drive it much like that through the gears. However, once I accepted that it likes being wound out, I started winding it out more & then the performance picked up & I really started enjoying driving it all the more. As for the sound deadening materials, yes they absolutely helped. Now I haven’t felt the need to do it on my 2022 just yet. However, if I upgrade the speakers on it at some point, then I’ll probably do it just the same while I have everything apart. Sure it’s a little added cost but, if you’re planning on keeping as long as I am, it’s a worthwhile investment. Hope that helps.

@@adriangoede7433 Wow! Thank you so much for your detailed response, this is really going to help on my decision to purchase another mirage. That’s awesome you enjoyed the vehicle enough to buy it again. My previous vehicle was a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 sedan and I drove it from brand new until about 110,000 miles till it unfortunately got totaled in a wreck. I wasn’t very fond of the vehicle mostly due to how noisy it was on the highway, terrible sound system, how much the vehicle would drift/move around on the highway especially with high winds and semi-trucks driving past. Gas mileage & practicality were the advantage’s but I’m unsure of the positive’s outweigh the negatives. I also had engine issues right over 100,000 miles. The engine Mount & a/c compressor both needed to be replaced which were very expensive repairs. Also had a issues with the brakes where I had to replace the brake pads and rotors pretty frequently and probably needed new breaks entirely but I wasn’t willing to fork over the money for that kind of work. I drove it full time for Uber and put an average of 35,000 miles per year for the 3 years I owned it so it really got put through a lot of use. I’m going back and forth between getting an older cheaper model any years before or after 2017. The 2017 year was supposedly the worst year for the Mirage so likely going to skip that model year. Has Mitsubishi fixed any issues that the previous year mirages had? Such has better quality radio system, more stability/the car not drifting on the highway? How many miles do you have on your new Mirage and do you like the Mirage more than your echo? Lastly sorry for all the questions! I’m thinking about purchasing the hatchback version of the Mirage so I can use it to sleep in for road trips, do you think there’s enough space to sleep in during the night? Thank you so much for the reply and your insight!

Besdies fuel economy and low price, the maneuverability of the car needs to be mentioned s a benefit. It relieves so much of the frustration of driving in a dense metropolitan area. Parallel parking is so easy with a tiny car like this. You can pull off U turns on a two lane street. When you're stopped behind someone turning left at a green light you can squeeze right past them. Even driving in Manhatten isn't too bad, which is something I would avoid at all costs in my previous larger car

I loved my 2014 Mirage ES in Kiwi Green while I owned it. An excellent new car value at the time for $11,900 fully loaded. I had it for 4yrs and 56k miles until it was rear-ended. I replaced it with a new 2018 Hyundai Elantra SEL, which was priced similarly to the 2018 Mirage at the time because Mitsubishi was no longer offering big discounts on the Mirage, but Hyundai was on the Elantra. The Elantra has had three times the amount of problems in half as much mileage. It's been a nightmare! With used car values sky-high right now due to the pandemic, I'm seriously thinking about selling the Elantra to cash in on the value, and daily driving my dependable 14yr old pickup truck. If new Mirage prices ever do drop back to the discounted $8,000-$12,000 range again, I"ll seriously have to consider snatching one up.

Pay them no mind. Ive driven everything from 80s econobox to modern V8 luxury cars. This is the best mix of fuel economy and reliability in a small car currently available. And is fine for comfort and interior space. Its only "weakness" is actually a positive: The 76hp engine is perfect for the Jatco transmission it uses. Yes, Jatco CVTs are bad when they put them on heavy full size cars with 180hp+. The maximum horsepower rating on these CVTs is 150hp, so really 75-80hp wont cause any problems for a car this small and light. It will be a litte loud when going on highway speed but performance is acceptable. Just remember to change your engine and transmission/CVT fluid regularly and this car will last you a looooong time.

Original owner of a 2018 with CVT with 83k miles on it now. Burns oil badly. Car goes into protection mode when driving on the highway for at 75 mph for 45 minutes. It literally loses power and shoots the rpms up way high. I try to get off the highway, making me late for work or visiting family. Getting on the highway is scary with the lack of hp and having everyone riding ass while I'm almost flooring it. Some how I get 30-32 mph city and 28-30 highway. I'm guessing it's because the eco shuts off around 77ish mph. Dealership gave me the run around a few months ago and charged me $400 for looking at it and changing my tabs fluid. They made no fixes. 100k mile warranty lmfao Idk how the one in the vid is $13k. Mine is bare bones, doesn't even have fog lights or cruise control and it cost me $15.4k.

Goes into "production mode"? What does that even mean? Sounds like you got a lemon, which sucks because the vast majority of owners love their Mirages, judging from the comments on here. Your burning oil on a 2 year old car? You must be beating the hell out of the 3A92 engine.

@@kylemas2005 fixed it. I meant protection mode. The gear indicator on the dash flashes and the rpm just shoots up to 4k no matter what speed you're going and won't go over 5k rpm while keeping the car from going over 70 mph. It's scary af with all the highway driving I do for work.

@@jesuscarrillo4344 Dude you sure its not your JATCO CVT7? A flashing "D" whilst in drive means your cvt is overheating. Check the fluid dipstick on the right side of your engine bay. If the cvt fluid is black your tranny is blown. Change the cvt fluid immediately, that should be done every 30k miles and the 2 filters in your cvt should be changed every 60k miles. Its in the owners manual service schedule. You have 17k miles of that warranty. Pray the service writer gets you a new CVT free.

@@jesuscarrillo4344 Damn. You got a straight up lemon! You need to contact a lemon law lawyer. That's 2 massive failures back to back. I'm telling you the Mirage is dead reliable for the vast majority of owners. You got screwed with a lemon. Luckily you got that warranty. I hope you did the cvt fluid changes though because if you didn't or don't have documentation showing you did, they can deny warranty work on replacing the cvt. To me though I think your whole car came out of the factory out of spec. You deserve a replacement. Pros: warranty length Cons: Literally. Everything. Else. The worst car for sale in Canada, bar nine. Buy a Chevy Spark or Hyundai Accent - either is better - a LOT better. The only thing that the Mirage brings that those two don't is a complete end to your will to live. The only car it's truly competitive with is an '89 Chevy Sprint, and even that would be close. The Mitsubishi Mirage: the only car that makes the previous generation Nissan Versa sedan look exciting.
