I actually like it when you miss a few -- it gives the full reverb of the fired gun in the hills back to the camera, and it sounds quite pleasing. It's just a camera we're viewing this through, but I feel like it truly captures those subtle differences, and gives you a better understanding of what you can expect with that type of firearm if you have one, or getting one.

I just picked up this revolver two weeks ago but I haven't had a chance to take it to the range because I haven't been able get ammo. I can say that the fit and finish of this gun is remarkable, and buttery smooth. It's a work of art in my opinion.

Many are obsessed with the NEW vs OLD differences. Let's look at a model 27 Smith from the '50s vs one made today. Examine it inside and out. In number, there are at least as many changes. The issue is Colt completely quit making double-action revolvers for about 15 years, then started again. They have manufacturing changes and mechanical changes. These could also be viewed as "Updates". I have done complete action jobs on close to 60 of them. Every one of them has been a darn nice revolver. I have tested a few in my Ransom Machine Rest at 50 yds and 100 yds. The new Pythons shoot just as tight as the old Pythos. Many have even shot tighter. The barrels are still broach rifled and choke bored. The Python has no more change done to it than a Smith. With the Colt it happened all at once, which through the laws of human nature, puts it under a microscope. I own lots of revolvers. I have picked up my fair share of messed-up Smiths through the years. Manufacturing defects unfortunately occur with every brand. hickok45 might remember when the Smith 586/686 first came out. Several of them had a problem where they would "bind up" because the ejector rod would unthread and lock tight. You could not open them. Smith had a crapload of these sent back with stuck cylinders. Smith corrected the problem, but there was no internet in the early 1980s when all of this occurred. If there was they would have been blasted to no end! The number of faulty 586/686 revolvers FAR exceeded the number of NEW Pythons with defects. With the Smiths, it literally numbered into the thousands. People need to get an accurate perspective on this.

Good to see someone with knowledge fact check some of the unwarranted criticisms on the great Colt Python SEMPER FI Brother I have a 82 Python and it is the only one I’ve kept in the 40 years of owning several wheel guns I’m strictly a semi auto guy these days

Could be because Smith sells tens of thousands more then Colt. Colt hasn’t even made revolvers in over a decade and have changed hands more then a cheep hooker. Not the colt it was that’s for sure.

@@ironmonkey1512 And the Old, "Vintage" Pythons......not as much. A steady diet of hot and fast .357 Magnum Rounds will knock that action off timing. The older, Pre-2010 K-Frame S&W Revolvers (Models 19, 13, 66, & 65) hold up better shooting a steady diet of hot and fast .357 Magnum Rounds, and those guns were and still are criticized over the issue of cracked forcing cones despite how rare they were. A lot less common than Pythons going out of timing.

Yes, as long as it's true to the original. And since Colt doesn't have the S&W fascination with key hole locks and such, I don't see why they could not do it. A parkarized finish should be easy enough to achieve, as well.

I remember a year ago, before Colt announced the return of the Python, everyone said, “they can’t do the Python today. They don’t have the old, experienced gunsmiths to make them like they used to.” It sounds like Hickok disagrees. Just like anything else, gunsmithing is not rocket science. It takes education and experience, but it’s not magic. And the difference today is that technology can overcome some of the experience lost. I’m glad to see that Colt was able to fulfill the promise of a new Python. I hope I can buy one one day.

Wonderful video, Mr.Hickok and son. I once cycled an old blued six inch barrel Python in a gun store that possessed one of the most butter smooth actions I had ever cycled. I just could not afford to buy it. I did later buy a Dan Wesson six inch heavy barreled blued 357 that had a wonderful single action trigger and the double action was good but nothing like that Python. I don't know if that Python had been worked on or what but that double action, the completely butter smooth way the cylinder moved and locked up and the way the trigger broke so clean with so little effort always impressed me. And I know this might make people mad but I swear , I have owned stainless steel and blued steel revolvers and ,TO ME ,there is just something better and smoother cycling and firing to a blued steel revolver versus a stainless steel revolver. Stainless is great for finish durability but the ring of a blued steel revolver never gets old.

Good video. I've got two 2020 Pythons, a 6" and a 4.2". I'm quite happy with both. I was lucky I suppose and didn't have much trouble locating them, and paid MSRP for each. The 6" one has about 800 rounds through it. I did catch the sideplate screws working loose around 500 rounds. It took a couple minutes with a screwdriver to fix that and put it back into action. The 4.2" I haven't fired yet, mostly because the covid has kept the range closed at first, then operating at reduced capacity. It has been through several hundred dry-fire cycles with no problem, but I know, that's not the same as shooting it.

Back in the day, I shot a lot of PPC competition with the old style Python. Some parts of the course were double action. I am surprised how smooth the double action got after a few thousand rounds. It go so nice I would shoot NRA bullseye timed and rapid in double action.

You guys can consider yourselves lucky. In Brazil you can't own a revolver unless you have 4k laying around. A pistol is around 10k. Some shotguns are 8k. That's about 5+ months of work just to own a firearm.
