2020 Ram 1500 fuel tank swap 26 gallon to 33 gallon upgrade.

Dude you are the man for making this vid. Its a shame Ram puts such small tanks on their Rebels. Also the BS you had to go through with wrong parts being shipped.

I just finished this swap in my 2019. My truck suddenly had the fuel filling issue. One thing I noticed is that the small recirculation line with the blue locking clip. Just pull out the blue clip and just push the white button on the opposite side and it pulls right off. Don't pull out the white part, just the blue clip and squeeze.

Got a fuel fill issue on my 2021. Been dealing with it through the winter. Once it warms up here I'm going to do the same swap.

I got a 2021 eTorque with the small 23 gallon tank. My evap canister went bad. Tank won't fill normally. I'm thinking of upgrading to the 33 gallon instead of putting money into the 23 gallon setup, once the weather warms up. Super stupid of them to offer different size tanks just simplify the supply chain and put a 33 gallon tank on every truck.

Jez. What was the point of a smaller tank? Seems like the cost for RAM would be almost identical for either. My 2017 had the 33gal, my 2020 has the 26gal. Definitely nice to fill up less.

Gas tank has a heat shield held on with some kind of funky fasteners. No mention of how to disconnect that shield with breaking those fasteners. I need to remove the shield and lower tank to replace part of evap system.

If I recall the heat shield has plastic clips that work kind of like a large push rivet. Pull the center out and then remove the clip.

Great video. Question the diagrams show a different fuel pump for the 26 gallon tank and the 33 gallon tank and yet you reused the one from your 26 gallon tank in your 33 gallon tank. What’s the difference? I was told it is the height of the tank so you might not be able to suck from the bottom of the 33 gallon tank with the 26 gallon fuel pump, have you noticed this?

At the time that I did the swap the part numbers for the 26 gallon and the 33 gallon fuel tank were the same. The 23 gallon fuel tank has a different pump. I never had any problems with the fuel pump. When you compare the tanks side-by-side in that section they are the exact same. The difference in the tank is on the front of the fuel tank towards the driver seat. You can see that in my video.

My question is why do you have to reprogram the ECM for the DTE? Is it just because there is additional fuel left in the tank compared to the stock tank? And what would the DTE be charged to? Now i have a 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn 4x4 with a procomp 6inch lift.

The DTE will be off because it is programmed for the smaller tank. The fuel gauge will reflect the right amount of fuel in the larger tank. To get the correct DTE, you will need to reprogram with Alpha

Caleb, I know you're not a professional, but can you think of any reason why this 33 gallon fuel tank would NOT fit on my 2019 RAM 1500 (Gen 5)? I was told today by the Mopar parts guy that a 33 gallon fuel tank would not fit on my 2019 RAM 1500 (DT)? But here you are proving him wrong. Any suggestions?

Ram put out a service bulletin not long after I posted this video advising dealers to not do the tank swap. So now most dealers just say that they are not compatible. I have had zero issues since the swap. Everything was relatively easy to do. Hope this helps! 🤙🏼

This fuel tank is meant for the DT body style truck.

How many more miles to a tank did you get after the swap. I know everyone is different but just in general. I usually leave about 5 gallons or just when the low light comes on I’m getting fuel already.

I didn’t have the factory mount for the 3rd tank strap. Some trucks have it and some do not. I have ran it for a while now and haven’t had a single issue.

Yes the two hoses are together and under one part number.

Thanks! AlfaOBD appears to be the easiest way to get it done. Dealers can flash the ECU if you can find one that will do it reasonably.

No, the computer still thinks it has the smaller tank. You have to go to a dealer to have them flash the computer to the correct tank size.

If the dealer is capable they will charge you a minimum hour labor. Which is $120-$150 roughly

I have seen estimates of $1200-$1500 but Ram has now put out a Service Bulletin asking dealers not to perform tank swaps. So it will be up to the dealer if they will perform the service or not.

Total cost will vary depending on dealer. $700-$1100 I did not price a dealer as I saw that it was a pretty simple swap based on my experience.

If you think about it, the 7 gallon difference at the posted highway mileage would mean you would get an extra 224 miles of drive time before you would have to refuel: (32 highway mpg * 33 gal tank) = 1056 miles to empty vs 832. Whether that's worth it or not is up to you, but you could essentially drive from Florida to certain parts of New York without stopping for gas

I haven’t had any issues with warranty. This all depends on the dealer though. If you use OEM parts they are covered by the manufacturer if installed properly.
