(2020) Soldano Amplification SLO -100 (MKII) - Quick Playthru

Күн бұрын

Legendary amplifier designer Michael Soldano is back in a big way with the new and revamped icon of high gain tone. The SLO-100 or Super Lead Overdrive 100 (mkII) is the newest iteration and 1st major retooling of the amp that made Soldano the revered brand worldwide. Often imitated and many times poorly copied there is simply NOTHING that matches a SLO-100.
This is the first in a series of videos exploring the sonic landscape of this amp. A quick get to know you playthru for this video to just check out its overdrive channel and turn a few knob.
Cab - Marshall 1960BX
Speaker - Celestion Alnico Cream 90W
Guitar - Jackson USA SL2HT
Pickups - Arcane Inc.
Mics - Mesanovic Model 2 Ribbon + Shure SM57

Best sounding amp ever. Period. I remember when I first tested one in an amp shop in Hollywood around '86, '87. I was TOTALLY blown away. I still am. It has a much higher level of clarity than ANYTHING you're going to hear from Mesa.

@angusorvid8840
@angusorvid8840 2 жыл бұрын
@@prasanthselvadurai3450 I could never stand Rectos. I hate all the Marks from the III upwards as well. Beyond that I like the Mark II C+ and the Lonestar, Stiletto, Filmore, etc. I like the 25 Rectoverb, much better than the other Rectos. I owned a 50 Cal which was a great amp. Otherwise, Boogies have never been my thing. Too much compression as well. Soldanos can still get a great, open kind of overdrive, which is what I prefer. I think the VHT/Fryette Pitbull is superior to any of the Mark series for pure high gain. The give band graphic EQ also works a lot better. Bogners are also great.
@angusorvid8840
@angusorvid8840 2 жыл бұрын
@@cardbored_ I know! My problem with Mesa is that they prioritized a thrash kind of overdrive due to the popularity of Metallica and other bands that were using them. They are very tiring on the ears. Just pure, cold fuzz. Mike Soldano always stuck to his guns, to what the SLO was known for delivering. His amps are just wonderful works of art. I'd say if you're only going to get one high end tube amp in your life, get an SLO. It's worth it. They are built to last forever. This is why so many big players use them on the road, not just in the studio. Marshalls fall apart, especially if they're modded. I've seen too many nightmares with Marshalls, Laneys, etc.
@jaboozled
@jaboozled 8 ай бұрын
Higher level of clarity than anything Mesa you say? Laughable comment. Have you even played a Mark IIC+, Mark III, Mark IV, etc.? Way more articulate for high gain applications. That's literally what they're known for.

Dude I hope you get a chance at one. I actually ended up with a SLO 30, since I’ve shifted to smaller amps with full size tubes. Literally a dream come true that Soldano brought these back to the public, and made the 30w version. I had an Ironball and it was killer. But the SLO 30 just has THAT sound. The only other amps that ever made me smile and grow in excitement as I played them are the JJ-100 and KSR Ares (6550). The JJ (and the Jr I also have) on the JBE setting have the rock tone I’ve always wanted in my head. The KSR is that perfect darker Marshall/Mesa blend made modern for death metal and OSDM. The SLO is the sweet spot between a Rectifier and OG 5150. Most versatile range for my tastes and just hits a tone like the JJ did, but looser, rougher, and more open. Get a wide vertical 2x12 for the SLO; you’ll never want to play anything else.

Contrary to what many may believe, some of the first prominent players who used the SLO were as un-metal as it gets, like Lou Reed, Clapton, Warren Haynes and Dickie Betts of the Allman Bros. I saw Warren and Dickie live and they both had Soldanos. Sounded fantastic. It all comes down to tone and build quality. Soldanos are very bit as roadworthy as a Boogie.

Reza, Do you know what changed Soldano's mind about not calling it quits? I talked to him, about 1.5 years ago, before I bought my Friedman, and was thinking about having him make me an amp. Very nice, and down to earth, humble guy. At that time, according to him, because of health problems, he told me he was shutting down for good. I wonder what happened and changed his mind? Very nice sounding amp.

It'll be intersting to see what the price does on the "vintage" SLO's that mike built vs these new ones. I wouldn't be surprised if the market artificially inflated the price like how the old Klon's have gotten despite them being back in production.
@RezaMatix
@RezaMatix 4 жыл бұрын
not really a consideration for me. I have had the old ones, They literally had this one and one of the oldest models in an A/B amp switching shootout and there was NO way to tell the difference. There are some major upgrades under the hood on the new ones. It needed an update. They can keep all the older ones they want, its gonna be hard enough to get the new ones with such limited production numbers AS IS.

@@RezaMatix Yeah there were some things that I'm glad have been addressed. I didn't know THAT much about SLO's until I met up with Bruce from Brit-Tone and talked to a few guys who had done blind play testing between real SLO's and Bruce's clones and couldn't tell the difference. Bruce ended up "fixing" the FX loop, warren hayes mod, solo boost and on one he built, per my own suggestion to tryout, he made the gain pot on the overdrive channel linear instead of hitting super heavy saturation really quickly. From what he was saying, guys had started going to him for their SLO after Mike quit making them. AFAIK, Bruce still builds them a little cheaper than these new ones and after spending a few shows with a 50w version and his 100w one, it's about the best sounding stage amp I've ever plugged into. I just hate that the real "SLO magic" doesn't happen until the amp is just RIPPING loud.

SLO 100 MkII vs Wizard MTL MkII... which do you prefer? From recordings, they seem to have similar EQ capabilities, thickness of tone, and thump. Where they differ most is texture (smooth vs raw). Do you agree, having owned and played both?
@RezaMatix
@RezaMatix Жыл бұрын
The soldano has a halo around the gain, the wizards are just Muscle down the center. They feel direct and immediate, whereas the Soldano has that juicier gain and a much more airy top. They both have their strengths and use cases. But if i just described my take on the textural differences...then I guess I would need more info for the use case. I would take the wizard half stack almost to any gig and be able to get at least 5 different sounds to start with, And its got the tunable back end for each channel! You can set your brightness amount like a presence circuit for each channel, help you tame cabs and help speakers. The Soldano, none of that. So, the Wizard has all these capabilities and is SO much tighter on the low end (for my chuggaholic tendencies). Ive run them together and its awesome as well :).

Thanks for the demo! I was not looking at a Soldano due to the crazy prices on the MK1, and I knew nothing about the MKII.......But your demo has me interested! You said that the amp has 3 sounds available.....clean, crunch, overdrive.......Does that mean that these sounds are foot-switchable? Would make it better for live......Thanks again! :)
