If you have the auto-dimming rear-view mirror with Homelink & Compass on your 2020 Subaru Outback, this video will help you program your vehicle to use a Homelink compatible garage door opener. If you park your Outback in a garage, this is a fantastic feature.
Note: I do not work for Subaru or a Subaru retailer. I am only an owner and am providing these videos for informational purposes only. Please always refer to your Owners Manual for official information.

Thanks for this video. I still have the original “Sears” garage door openers I installed when I bought a new house near 30 years ago. Much to my surprise, the Subaru learned the codes from the remote, just as you show in your video. Thank you, you saved me a bunch of wasted time fussing around. Cheers👍

We just bought a 2021 Outback Touring XT last week and love the vehicle so far. However, being a little older, so glad to have your videos to watch to help us program the various functions-thanks so much for the easy-to-understand tutorials!

Just programmed mine yesterday. My door opener DOES have the learn button and for my other cars I needed to complete the second step to program the car’s home link buttons. For some reason, my Subaru required only the step shown in this video. Definitely not complaining!

oldsnwbrdr Interesting. Previously I had to move the cars out of the garage, press the “learn” button on the garage door opener body, then go to the car and press the garage door opener buttons, once for each door (my older 2011 Mitsubishi). But with the Subaru, it learned right from the remote, no ladders, moving cars around, no fuss. Subaru did something very right by learning from the remote. A tip of the hat to SubaruOwnerTips for the video, saved me a significant effort and time. Thanks for commenting, we all learn from one another.. Warmest Regards!

IT WORKED !!! THANKS !!! I never could get my 2014 Forester programed to the Craftsman Opener I used to have. This worked with the GENIE openers I have on my new house. THANK YOU !!!

New 2020 outback xt---I push one of the buttons under the mirror to start programing and I get no response with light in mirror. The compass and on/off button are working. Ignition on only, or car running both ways no go. I have held down double and triple button combinations and no response. Blank mirror. Big fan!!!!!!!!! My dealer watches your channel too.

You might need to take it down to the service department to have them look if you're getting zero lights or activity. Something might be wrong. Maybe a loose wire? Thanks for watching!

@@SubaruOwnerTips Took it in and they found a short in the harness in the headliner. They replaced the harness and now it works fine. How did it get out of the factory like that? Thanks for the reply.

@@burrtucker9989, Interesting. Glad they fixed it for you. They should have caught this at the factory, and again at the retailer during the pre-delivery inspection. So sorry you had to experience that. Obviously, Subaru still has some work to do in the quality assurance process.

I got my garage door programmed, but can you give me Any help programming my gate remote to the home link buttons? I’ve followed the same steps in your video, I’ve read the user manual and tried everything it says in there as well. My wife’s car is a Toyota and it has programmable buttons and she has the gate programmed to it successfully. So I know it works, I just need to figure out how to make it work in my 2019 Outback limited I just got. Thanks in advance.

I noticed you pressed the left button on the garage door opener then the middle button of the Subaru mirror. Are you supposed to press the same corresponding buttons?
@SubaruOwnerTips
@SubaruOwnerTips 4 жыл бұрын
No. The large button on my remote sends the "Open Door" signal. You can then map that signal to any one of the three buttons on the rear view mirror. This way you can open up three garage doors using the mirror, if you are one of those lucky people that has a three-car garage!

So I successfully linked my garage door opener. Thank you. Now, is there a way to make the homelink NOT open garage door unless the fob is present?
@SubaruOwnerTips
@SubaruOwnerTips 3 жыл бұрын
That would be a really cool setting to have. Subaru is known for listening to customers. It does take them several years to implement some ideas, but they seem to take feedback seriously. Send them a note and let them know what you'd like to see.

@@SubaruOwnerTips Thanks for the quick response! Do you think this is ok, considering that someone could break into the vehicle and open the garage door?
@SubaruOwnerTips
@SubaruOwnerTips 2 жыл бұрын
@@livinginwilderness7913, That's a great point. I always park my OB in the garage, so never thought about the security risk of leaving it out. I just went out and tested it, and indeed the door was opened. Here is what I did to test: 1) Rolled down the drivers window. 2) Locked the car. 3) Put the fob at least 30 feet from the car. 4) Waited ~15 minutes. 5) Reached in through the door and operated the homelink controls. 6) The garage door opened. If this is a concern for you, please let Subaru know. I'll be letting them know as well. This could easily be fixed by requiring the keyfob be present to enable the Homelink system, along with a reasonable time-out after the doors are locked before it goes in to a security mode.

And I guess to be fair, just about every garage door opening system out there also has this problem, but the remote can be removed from the vehicle and brought indoors easily. In this case, however, Subaru has a chance to make it more secure. Let's hope they do it!

Thanks so much for thoroughly testing it! To your last point, I keep the door opener inside the car, and I disable the function from the wall opener, so the remote can’t talk to the opener. I will reach out to Subaru for that.

That’s the automatic mirror dimming switch. When it’s green (on), it dims the headlights that show up in the mirrors to help prevent glare.

You might need to track down the instructions for your particular garage opener and learn how to pair it with homelink. Also, the full Outback manual has a few special-case instructions for paring a garage door. You might need to try one of those special procedures.

@SubaruOwnerTips

You would have to check with the manufacturer of your garage door opener to find out if that is possible. There may be some other way to pair it. Have you checked the manual for the door opener? Look for a section that describes how to pair it with Homelink.
