Of course you have scroll down to the appropriate comparison chart. I am impressed with the work you have put into these rankings. But what most surprised me is how highly ranked the Toyota Camry AND Avalon TRD's are ranked, not just for value, as their fun factor is only one point less that that of the WRX premium. Just drove an old friend's manual WRX (Not the STI), and was so impressed with how much fun it was. I was about to pull the trigger to get one as my "driver's" car. But now I think I have to try these Toyota TRD's before making a decision. Until recently, I would never have considered a front wheel drive car for the job. Of course, the Civic Type R has changed many minds, but once you are over a certain age, the Type R just doesn't have a look that I can live with.

I got a 2020 WRX base trim in October. The rev hang is unfortunate but I just accept it and it doesn’t bother me anymore. I just wait a little longer before letting the clutch out in 2nd (wait for rpm to drop about 2k) and it is smoother for me. I love the way it handles too. So much grip. I love the power delivery. I learned stick on this car with the salesman in the passenger seat. I wouldn’t recommend learning manual on this car but if I can do it then anyone can do it if they are determined and have enough patience.

I have a 2018. I leased it. I can't wait to give it back. It's terrible. Bad quality (things started to vibrate and rattle after 3 months of ownership). It's slow. Terrible gearing. So you're constantly shifting to get nowhere. Interior noise is high. No there's no difference in years. I test drove an employee 2015 because apparently they don't allow test drives on wrx's. But the salesman allowed me to drive an employee wrx because i told him i don't have any interest if i don't get to test drive. Same interior noise as my 2018. If anything, that 2015 felt better. The clutch i mean. It's easier to manage. Paint has some issues, the battery is weak. (had to jump start it during the 2nd winter after it only sat 3 days). The radio is HORRIBLE. And since i'm an OCD maintenance type of guy, i do oil changes every 3 months regardless of miles. The FA destroys oil like there's no tomorrow. Some people say it's because of the turbo but i have other turbo cars without this issue. This engine shears oil like no other. I have about 9 months left on the lease and i can't wait to give it back. I had a 2006 wrx about 5 years ago and that was way better. Subaru quality slipped through the cracks. This wrx will be the last subaru i will ever buy. I should have leased a stinger before this.

I'm so damn happy you started the drive portion of your video absolutely hammering the WRX for its poor manual transmission. I feel like every other review on KZfaq tries that hardest to kind of glaze over the poor transmissions and making light of it, but after 16k miles and a year of ownership the main reason I gave up on my wrx was specifically because of the trans and of course the rattles coming from literally everywhere. I wish people were more transparent as to how bad the trans is. And yes I know. Go after market, but there's plenty of people I'd say at least a large minority, don't want to go to the aftermarket. As you mentioned Hondas trans are smooth with no issues right out if the box. Regardless great review, your transparency will get you far!

I've got a 2019 very similar to what you've reviewed here. I'd say your review is spot on, with 2 caveats. First, the seats are good like you say, but I'd like a bit more lumbar support, or maybe an adjustable lumbar pad. (I correct this with a t-shirt or some such.) Second, I drive a lot of stop and go traffic (mine is a daily driver.) It doesn't make my foot hurt, but its characteristics in lower gears make slow traffic tiresome. I've driven worse in traffic, (heavy clutched muscle cars) and better (Hondas, Mazdas.) Over all, its a year old and I'm still loving it.

@DarklightRebel4 жыл бұрын
@TheMetalGuy852 nearly all the issues you mention I have not experienced in my 2019. They made improvements to the insulation and suspension to the 2018+ so that may be part of the reason. The rev hang can be tuned out with as little as a Cobb tune, what you are experiencing is not rev hang but the slow spool down of engine RPM caused by the pulleys and flywheel weight. Rev hang feels different, and with a tune, there isn't any. Your ringlands aren't going anywhere, this is an fa20, not an ej25. And -2.84 isn't much knock at all, though if you see it constantly you must be running really poor gas because I hardly ever do. It's debatable if Subaru can see that you tuned it. The reset counter also applies to disconnecting the battery, so arguably that could be the reason it's at 0. The understeer is deliberately there because people can't drive. It's an alignment feature to make the car safer. When you start to understeer, take your foot off the gas and you will notice the weight shift forward and the car suddenly grab into the corner. This is easier for most drivers to understand and manage, so Subaru sets it up this way deliberately. A performance alignment fixes this. The clutch bite point feels great on mine. Again, changed for 18+ model years. Shifted feels nice too. I get 26mpg average, regularly get 33 on the freeway, and a friend of mine has managed as high as 40 with an eco tune. The transmission is not made of glass. That's the 2002 bugeye. The trans is out of a European model diesel and quite durable in fact. If you are clutch dumping it, eventually something is gonna let go, as with any car with this muc grip. If you drive it correctly it will last a long time and is good up to about 400hp. The brakes are fine, they don't fade unless you treat it like a race car. It has street pads. If you want to avoid brake fade put in dot4 fluid and track pads. The steering feels great in mine. The most direct and lively feeling electronic steering I've ever driven. Has good road feedback too. I think this was also improved for 2018. I've never seen or heard of anyone deleting the AC on this car ever, and I follow a lot of groups. Seems honestly beyond moronic to do that since it can just be turned off and have the same effect. Sorry you didn't get along with your 17, sounds like you were either looking for a different feel of car or the 18 maybe was more what you wanted it to be.

I agree. I've let several friends drive it, and warned each one about this before hand. Still resulted in many lurching starts and stalls. Takes becoming accustomed too. BTW, I don't think it's all due to the clutch. I think, when shifting, you are also usually going from no boost to full boost. Really easy to misjudge gas and clutch use when the power changes so much.

According to Subaru's product reps, the difference in the EPA fuel efficiency ratings between the manual and CVT has to do with EPA's ratings process. Because Subaru's user surveys discovered that most CVT-equipped WRX drivers use the sport setting for everyday driving, the EPA used that setting when they measured the mpg rating for the CVT. In practice, the CVT will have slightly better fuel economy over the manual when in its economy setting, as one would expect. Subaru's press launch of the current generation WRX had a discussion on this topic, at about the 22-minute mark of this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLt_p86p1LvZo2Q.html

Is it all that fair to compare the current Golf-R to the WRX Sport Sedan?, If so, Your choice? Have you done a review on the Golf-R? Don't understand why VW can't compete at Suburu's price point for an AWD Sport Sedan, with manual transmission.
@DriversOnly4 жыл бұрын
I havent tested a Golf R yet but I believe the Golf GTI is the same class as WRX. R is competing with the STI. Hope to test them soon.
@josephamendolaro87894 жыл бұрын
@@DriversOnly Thank you for the prompt reply. Though the GTI is not AWD like the Subie. I just wish VW would make an AWD sport sedan with manual trans to compete with the WRX sedan. It almost seems like VW doesn't listen to market hunger. They still have yet to come up with a smaller SUV, while the rest of the market is well on their way. ...frustrating.

Really good review. I own a 202 WRX Premium with 1000 miles on it. You said there was no USB port. Yes there is. Under the center armrest. I notice more road noise on certain road surfaces. Yes as far as the clutch. But I'm pretty much used to it now.

Really enjoyed your review. I drive a 18 crosstrek 6spd and the clutch is very similar. Also, going from 1st to 2nd is so hard. Because of rev hang ? it’s very difficult to go into 2nd gear. I wonder if the short throw shifter solves that issue somewhat. Not that I’m getting one on a crosstrek. Also, it won’t fall into first unless you come to a complete stop. I love the wrx but these two things can be overlooked when you have that much hp i guess.

I am probably still.looking at a 2020 Honda Civic Sport Sedan, but would consider the Sport Hatchback now that it finally has all the goodies the from the Sport Sedan when that came out last year, or may even consider the new Si, but I would rather have a loaded Camry XSE in either engine option. But this WRX in Premium or Limited trim in dark blue with the Sti shifter is what I would get if I really want a more aggressive driver's car. The downside of AWD is the cost of tires if you need to replace one, because most full time systems require you to get all four tires new. The CVT is the weakest thing on the Subarus if you want long life with the least amount of problems. The know head gasket problem has not be widespread during the last 8 years, especially for no. STis or modified boost WRXs. I don't need or want an STi, So this would be just right if I wanted performance and a great shifter and clutch. And Having a CD player and I believe an auxiliary audio input jack is a plus, like the Camry, something Honda does not have. So this car, even with the cloth seats would be fine. I might get factory accessories and a few other things, including the Fa story upgraded exhaust and Rockford Fosgate add ins if I don't get the top of the line sound system, if they still offer that, but I don't plan on modifying or tuning it, increasing boost and such. That probably has everything I would need and want as mentioned to drive with performance and handling in mind. Great video as always. Last July I rented a base new Forester for two days. I hardly had time to drive it, I needed it to move house down the street, but really liked it, except I would want the alloy wheels, and probably would really want the Forester Sport. For what I want for an SUV, that would probably but my second consideration after a new Toyota Rav4 TRD or Adventure.

Wow that's a lot you just said right there lol. The WRX and Civic Sport are two very different cars. WRX is closer to the performance of Type R but with AWD.
@jjacob251014 жыл бұрын
@@DriversOnly I know. The Civic Sport Sedan is probably the best, affordable buy with sportiness, but longevity for a daily driver. And gradually up to the Si. I don't need a Trpe R or STi, but the WRX would be the best if I really wanted to shift and really drive.
