Thanks a lot Rich...means a lot to me! At least it has 5-10 times more views, likes and comments than the average of other whitetail content creator vids at the moment 😁 I think it will help folks going forward for a few years to come, because I agree, it can really help most folks in most situations on their lands.

Thanks for the video Jeff. This will be my first year following your no till strategy from spring throughout the year. I’ve followed your videos and implemented several of your management methods along with seeding your fall plantings on my parents old dairy farm in northern NY for the past couple of years. It’s left a lot of the neighbors scratching their heads as to what I was doing and likely the butt of a few jokes... until last fall when we harvested one of the largest bucks taken in the area in probably 3 decades. I’m a true believer. Keep up the great work. I’ll be sure to give my neighbors a smirk and head nod from the seat of my 4 wheeler this summer.

We planted about 1 1/2 acres of buckwheat on a new lease early June in Upstate New York. I thought we were in trouble as we had limited rain for a couple weeks. I visited the plot today and its thick and green. Some spots 12-16 inches. We'll be knocking it down in about 3 weeks and planting our Fall Plot. Great advice and video here. Thanks Jeff !

Jeff, I am a South Alabama wildlife manager. I own 88 acres and have been following you for years. The rut and fawn cycle is so different from most of your followers. Our fawns are born in late summer. So it is important to have a summer and winter food source. My fall date for planting is first of October. I have adjusted my planting dates from your plans and I thank you for sharing ALL of your management plans.

Jeff love your videos! Started with brassicas and rye last season in eastern NC and now want to use the ultimate no till. Put out buckwheat yesterday to try to get in 2 rounds before fall planting Labor Day. Problem is my rye and brassicas have grown to 5-6 feet already with the warm winter we had. Gonna cultipack and spray tomorrow. Am I going to have too much debris for this to work? Planned to plant and spray buckwheat again in 7 weeks.

Thanks Jeff you helped me out with this in a reply to my comment on what and when to knock down last years winter rye. I need to start addressing how to get bare soil contact strips for switchgrass so I can plant it next February or March. There is tall native grasses that needs to be removed in order to get down to the soil. When and how what is the best method to achieve this?

Jeff, excellent explanation step by step. I can't wait to implement my 2020 WHS food plot program by Jeff Sturgis. One question, when you mentioned on labor day to add 200lb winter rye to the beans and peas, then brassica to other brassica side. Are you saying to add additional Brassica seed in this step also? Thanks.

Great information, I am planning to use your techniques for my plots this summer, my plantings last year were in two squares at the end of a converted ag field. Having just purchased the property last spring I did not have much information to go on. The layout of the forty is proving difficult to hunt! But after watching everything you are sharing I feel there is hope. Thank you! I am wondering not being familiar with buckwheat, do the deer browse on it or do they avoid it in the summer months? I know our bees will be happy! PS water tank advice has already been taken and implemented.

Thanks Jeff! Could you talk about fall mix species you would pick if in a 500-1000 acre camp in 40k similar habitat. Comparable to the big woods public you talk about. What if you were trying to have the most attractive yet can produce enough for heavy graze. We are half dozen plots in your system now. Last fall was first planted into rolled and sprayed summer growth. We are now prepping for August planting and brassica and clover and grains?

Great information as I am going to try this for the first time. Two quick things. Deer creeks website said to plant buckwheat at 1/2 to 1 inch deep. Jeff, I have been planning to use this method to plant my food plots this summer/fall in western KY. When talking over my plan with my father-in-law who owns the land, he brought up why I am using this method when he has a tractor and no-till drill sitting in the barn. I understand this method you have developed is to be used with minimal equipment, but since I have access to it, would it be a waste not to use it? Would the process be the same if I was to use the drill instead? Thanks for all the awesome info!

Hello Jeff, I've been watching your videos on the no till system, I just want clarity that I'm correct on a few things. So right now i have a 2 acre stand of buckwheat that i put in around June 15. (I'm in northern West Virginia ) I'm wanting to plant winter cereal rye into it here in mid August ( I think this would be the right time ?) Can I mix in some brassicas with the rye or should I split the plot 1 to 1 acre? After i seed into the standing buckwheat and mash it down with my cultipacker I then need to spray w 2qt per acre glyphosate AND 2-4D? Or just glyphosate only. Will the rye and brassicas grow when using the 2-4D or should I only go w the glyphosate? Then in the spring I do the same thing by seeding buckwheat into the rye followed up w the spray recipe, correct? I also wanted to check real quick about seeding rye on freshly made logging roads with a good bit of canopy shade (it was select cut) will the lack of sun light hinder the rye or would that be a good choice? Thanks for all the info sir, keep them videos coming!

Interesting method and would like to try this next season on virgin ground. But what about liming and fertilizer. I been doing food plots in traditional ways with Disking and tilling ground while Lime and fertilizer is incorporated into the soil. Do you just leave all that on the top of the ground and if so. When would you do it. Obviously lime early But when would you fertilize and what type of fertilizer would you recommend for Buckwheat. Would you add additional fertilizer for fall planting prior to crushing and spraying. Obviously that would depend on what your planting for the fall since fertilizer would be different for clover than for brassica's or rye/wheat/oats. I have had problems with erosion and most of my land is sloped. So I am interested in this method

Jeff, I have been hitting your videos hard these last few weeks. Thank you! As I stated in a recent comment on another video, I am lucky enough to have just purchased a 20 acre near Mankato. We close March 19th 2021 and take possession that day. I want to to hit the ground running. My question is this. Do your books cover a step by step order of operations for planting small food plots? I have a 4 wheeler, 3 nozzle 25 gallon sprayer. And am going to buy a packer Max. I assume I need to weed with 2,4d may June July. Then plan to plant buckwheat, lay it down in the fall and do tillage radish for my first year. Just really need the step by step help, and hoping the books cover that in detail. Morning Jeff; last year was my first attempt at the no till system. Some things went well; others not so well. I should have used buckwheat last year but I did not. I'm assuming you are still spreading fertilizer prior to broadcasting your seed? My hope is to cut down on fertilizer the more the soil is improved. Thanks Jeff for this great video! I watched this one and the whiteboard tutorial. I’m new to hunting and property management but am fired up to learn. I’m in SW WI also (Sauk Co) and am putting this system in a level .75 acre plot. It was nearly all weeds before I started (goldenrod, hairy sunflower, smooth brome). I mowed the weeds down yesterday (DR brush mower), and want to just broadcast the buckwheat now as opposed to spraying herbicide and waiting since I got this late start. I have quite a bit of the area where I can see exposed dirt-the weeds were not super thick. Will this work? Planning on following the rest of the system to a T. Thanks again.

Hi Chip...asking as the majority of the seed gets into the soil you are all good! Also, DO NOT skip the Glyphosate...you can apply the Gly at the same time you spread the seed...won't hurt the seed in any way. Skipping the Gly will soon the buckwheat and your future planting before you even spread the buckwheat.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Thanks Jeff. Yes, Gly not being skipped--I am doing it at the same time as the planting. I appreciate your reply and am fired up to see the results. I am planting this Friday because I saw the tropical depression coming this way today and my property is right in the heaviest rain area of WI.

If you have a couple acreage that you want to make into a food plot with a no till design. Whats the steps . What do you spray to kill the weeds

The only thing Im asking about is the 2 QUARTS of roundup to the acre. I have one plot that requires a disking early on to dry it out. It's in a swamp. The other plots are on hill sides so no disking there. Naked oats work good for us in the south.

Thanks again Jeff these videos are awesome. I do have a no till drill. My question to you is it OK to use this method with no till drill. Putting the seeds into the buckwheat with a no till drill and then spraying with round up afterwards. Thank you again for these videos they’ve helped me out tremendously.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 жыл бұрын
You are welcome! You can definitely use your no till drill for the I initial planting with a glyphosate follow up...but if you continue using this system you definately do not need to spend the time to use it or need it in general, in any way. You definately do not want to use the no till drill to plant into the buckwheat, as the amount of buckwheat and an increase of planting depth with the drill, can place the smaller seeds to deep for viable growth. It wouldn't matter for the larger seeds like beans and peas, but even then you do not want to go too deep. Think of the buckwheat as a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil over the seeds once crushed.

I am able to access my plot with a zero turn. (This is what your talking about at the 10 min mark). Could you seed over the top of the plot, then mow with a zero turn, seed again, and then kill it with glyphosate? The mowing should expose the stalk of the weeds and existing plot close to the ground and kill it very effectively. My only fear would be mowing would blow some of the seed away but that’s why I would seed again after mowing!! Any thoughts?

Awesome!......Post seeding: Can a guy shred the buckwheat with a brush hog or perhaps weed whacker in tiny plots or will that not terminate it?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 4 жыл бұрын
I definitely would not. You want the stalks crushing all of the same direction so sunlight can get to the germinating plants ASAP. Also, you can just run it over with ATV tires...truck tires, etc.
