Great review and the mic you are using is coming in way clean. I have an Autobahn and I think Fender sound great for what it is.

When I had my 2012 Jetta, it sounded great but it doesn’t compare to the fender sound system. It blew my mind

@Slava Karkunov in my opinion, yes. I’ve owned a 2012 SE and it’s very muddy at high volume. The fender system is a lot more clear and has more layers to it.

Agreed. Coming from an MK6 to an MK7 I thought my stereo was the upgraded version and was surprised it was the base stereo. Only difference is the base stereo has 8 speakers instead of 9 (no sub) with a lower wattage amp. Sub and amp do make a huge difference but the base stereo still plays loud and clear with good bass.

A company called NAV-TV makes a processor call ZEN-V which replaces the Fender amp/processor and gives you 12 analog outputs to supply external amps with clean output. It's pricy at $960 but seems to be a great alternative for the stock Fender System. Even though it sounds pretty straightforward it's still a lot of work removing everything (the front driver seat for starters) for install of what would be an amazing system and if I had the energy I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I’ve found the base stereo to be surprisingly decent (backhanded compliment, I know). It has 8 speakers instead of 9 (no sub) and a lower wattage amplifier. Speakers are exactly the same. It can play REALLY loud without distorting (about 80%) with solid bass and crisp highs (EQ bass 8, Mids 1, Treble 9). It’s miles ahead of the base stereo in my MK6 GTI which was junk.

I recall online reviewers chuckling when they heard Fender was picked as the upgrade option on the GTI. I guess they expected it to feel like it wasn't worth the money. All I heard after that were crickets chirping... I have a GTI and the Fender sound system is amazing. It's clever how Ze Germans used the spare tire to amplify the woofer by placing it on top. I just hope I don't get a flat tire. It is a bit difficult disconnecting it to remove the tire.

@@largol33t1 you say ze germans but it's actually just basic engineering and has been done many times! There are many american and japanese cars that have also integrated the subwoofer inside the spare tire

It’s standard on autobahn trim and I believe a option for SE trim i haven’t worked at Volkswagen in a while I think that’s how it is

Hard to tell from the video but it does sound like it would be a solid system. Great fidelity at normal bass settings, tons of base if you want it, but obviously trashes sound quality. Sounds like with the lack of road noise, harsh suspension, and that high fidelity high clarity tone, these are 1 notch up on my HK Premium audio in the WRX. Had to get the HK premium because obviously it was the best on offer, but I was coming to the WRX from an IS350 with the 17 speaker Mark Levinson... difference was colossal. Really hated giving that car up, just because of the sound system

I don't blame you at all. This fender system is at least 1.5 notches above the pathetic subaru systems. If you didn't know, subaru gives ZERO shits about sound quality and they're one of the most embarrassing aspects of their cars(besides the middling interiors). For a lot of people having a bangin stereo is important and subaru doesn't provide that at all(have you heard their base systems on the impreza? it's like horrific.

I have a 2016 GLI with the same sound system and my brother has a Jetta with the standard system. I’ve noticed that the standard system is louder compared to the Fender. I have to crank up my audio so high because the road and wind noise drowns out all the music

do you have the fucking windows down or something? my guy you aren't going to hit near max volume so it's fine.. the fender is way better tuned.. who cares about loudness you're just playing it at an obnoxious level going 85mph

The GTI is one of the best small cars for everything: haul groceries, drive to work and hit the open road while double clutching through the corners. I refuse to let go of my GTI but I'm only hearing bad reviews of the '22 model. I hope they fix them soon so I can upgrade to the next one IF it still has a 6 speed manual. This is just one of those cars that feels better with a manual. I find paddle shifters boring.

this sound system is just decent at best. The Dynaudio system that they get in EU is actually worthy of the "premium" audio system title. The Fender system is just a small upgrade from the regular 8speaker system. And the bass is way too loud in its default setting, Fender/Panasonic didn't tune the amp correctly at all.

The Dynaudio package I had in my mk6 was lackluster. Didn't sound very premium and was a pain to upgrade.

@@jv6miata With the MK7, they used the same speakers as the MK6, but added a sub and changed the sound tuning. They also added features like “sound focus” so that you can focus the sound to a particular seat, in order to get the best possible stereo image. And “sound character” (authentic, soft, dynamic, speech) which lets you change the tuning of the sound, based on what you’re listening to. I retrofit this system into my 2019 Golf R, and it is night and day better than the Fender system that came stock, IMO.

@@blue-ck9ns I won't deny it was a hellava lot better than what I had in my 2009 GTI, but I had a bit of a gradual upgrade so maybe that's why. The mk5 headunit is awful, so I swapped in an OEM standard mk6 headunit without touch screen which made a big difference. Then I went from that to my 2010 Dynaudio which I guess was lackluster due to the lack of subwoofer. Before both of those cars I had a 2003 accord which had a kickass aftermarket system that even to this day I've never been able to replicate.

Fender sound system is good. Too bad VW no longer offers Dynaudio, except for the Arteon.

If it wasn't a very very difficult job I'd swap out the Fender amp and speakers long ago. The Fender system isn't that bad but compared to an aftermarket system it's substantially inferior. VW continues to make everything harder and harder to take apart (door panels, and the like) w/o breaking something. The Fender integrated AMP/DSP is a whole other issue to work around too. Maybe some day though I'll upgrade...maybe.

Very interested because it seems like a good place to start IF I ever attempt another install.I've done a few in the past before everything went Digital. Joe Walsh said it best. aftermarket systems are always going to be far superior relative to stock offerings.. the only exception are luxury cars with their many thousand dollar sound systems obviously..

I'm designing a system to replace mine, can't stand ANY factory systems since I've had a proper system, soundstage is not a thing on OEM systems, wish there was a proper one-seat mode.

@@Gosbecol123 yeah it costs WAY more.. BMW sound systems have been known to be LAME besides the 5 series high end ones and above.. their harmon kardon optional sound systems are so lame.. dilay motor gives them middling reviews

Ah, a 6 speed stick. I feel that the MINI Cooper, Subaru WRX, Corvette and GTI all are better with a stick shift, especially when you drive them in very bad weather.

PS: if you have an Android phone, remember you can just connect with Bluetooth and say "OK Google, play With or without you by U2." It will find and automatically play it. I find that feature SO convenient that I do it without thinking about it! Some Iphone owners have downloaded software on their phones just to take advantage of that.

the WRX needs it.. the gti does not with its excellent 7 speed dual clutch that's very fast. both are good options. the WRX has a dogshit CVT automatic yet many ppl still buy them. corvette automatic is fine too.. the mini cooper one is better with a manual
