I dont get it. I never played othello, but understands the the gameplay. Isnt it a guaranteed defense by securing the side along with the corners? White had the opportunity to block black from getting to the sides and black was able to secure the side earlier but did it at the very very end.
@OthelloAcademy2 жыл бұрын
It's a fair comment, but what you are describing is the later process to try to win a game which is to grab an edge to force your opponent to the xsq. Before trying to do that, there are lots of techniques to force your opponent. And the more you and your opponent knows these techniques the harder it is for each other to execute what u just described on how to win. That is why this game is always deceptively easy but actually involves very deep concepts of controlling your opponents mobility or legal moves :)
@NoNameAtAll211 ай бұрын
@@OthelloAcademy what's xsq?
@marcoberto30139 ай бұрын
@@NoNameAtAll2 xsq is the X square - the one that's diagonally adjacent to the corner. If you force your opponent to play there it gives you an easier chance to get the corner

hey im pretty new to the game and was just wondering... why play on a physical board instad of a touchscreen? it seems to me like they are losing a considerable amount of time turning the "pieces" (if that's how they are called)
@OthelloAcademy9 ай бұрын
Hi, it's "traditional" to playing on a board and flipping the discs since the start of the game. While technology has also been considered, its been deemed that the flipping is part of the "skill" involved of the process. Similar to international chess that still involves players physically moving pieces instead of just touch screen I guess.
@kylen64302 ай бұрын
Also, while I am not sure of the rules, but I speculate that if you happen to miss a piece to flip and press your clock, you lose that opportunity to claim that space.
@DavidKlausa2 ай бұрын
@@kylen6430 I was wondering what happens if you miss flipping a piece. Does the opponent point it out and hit the clock? It's not necessarily a disadvantage to "lost that opportunity to claim that space" so there could be an incentive to cheat if you "forget" to flip a piece you don't want to flip.
@kylen64302 ай бұрын
@@DavidKlausa as I said, I am not familiar with rules. But in chess, an illegal move results in opponent gaining time or forfeiture…maybe this is similar

Where can I get a board like the ones that use in tournaments?
@OthelloAcademy2 жыл бұрын
The easiest way to obtain one through rakuten perhaps or some of the online sales shops. I found one through a quick search here: item.rakuten.co.jp/jseller/js-7tjrl8xh/ While there might be cheaper ways to get it, but it would not differ a lot from USD 50 just for the board alone and not factoring in shipping even if you bought it in Japan retail stores. Fun fact, typically when you debut at a World Championship, they give you one for free as memento too. However, due to covid, the World Othello Championship hasn't been held since 2019.

If you mean game coordinates like H1 G5 etc, you can download reversatile, you should see it. But generally columns go from A to H from left to right and rows go from 1 to 8 from top to bottom. If you mean terms like box, or x squares or c squares etc, you can refer to my beginner class episodes, it's there :)

It isn't you. White messed up. At the high level as the game seems, there are two main goals. Once you figure that out, next is how to achieve those goals. It's easy for me to say this, but I have never played with a clock. That's another level of pressure.

The guy on the left should of played with his left hand, & you should of moved your pieces slower so we could catch every move
@OthelloAcademy2 жыл бұрын
For viewer's benefit, I would agree, but the tournament rules states each players selects and play with their preferred master hand :) so it's natural for most players to be right handed since most of the population are also right handed. Maybe the camera view should be overhead next time perhaps?
@carlschmiedeke1512 жыл бұрын
@@OthelloAcademy i was thinking the same thing of the over head view, but no then the hand would be blocking the chips moves, double camera action on both side of the board, or someone switching cameras for each player so no moves are blocked, & moving the chips slower would be beneficial for the viewers to catch each move, this is the only board game I've ever played because i hate board games, i absolutely love this game, & no, checkers just don't even compare to this game, even tho. It's somewhat similar, but, yeah, I'd love to be in a tournament, I've played this game for year's, with everyone, & never have I've been beat, starting out yes i have, until i learned the game, then it was smooth as taking candy away from a baby, 😂😂😂😂😂, now nobody wants to play me, their like what's the point, but yeah, when i sit down to play, i put my game face on, I'm there to destroy my opponent, & I'm out for blood,

3:00 white player pick C8 step is a poor step despite maybe the best move. Because black player style is full of creativity. If I were him I may pick E8 request black put G8.....(either C8,D8 also accepted) then pick D1 to rob B4 back(Request black pick B4 or not)... though may not be the best move, put the question back to black player 3:48 C3 is the victory step for black player forcing white player cannot put D1... that's why I strongly recommend D1 for white player that request B4 then put the question back to black player...
