An important match for surging Atletico against eternal stumbling block, Dortmund who find themselves without Marco Reus, (injury), and Thomas Delaney, (suspension), Bellingham and Dahoud are in their place. Atletico are without Joao Felix, a critical piece of their attack, so it will be interesting to see how the absences effect today’s outcome.
It was a slog to open, not much by way of offensive prowess for either club, a couple chances for both with a slight edge to Atletico for shots on target, but it was Dortmund punching the first goal in.
In the 42nd minute Julian Brandt got his 1st goal of the season on a beautiful assist from Erling Haaland, a real sterling play to setup Brandt from the goal machine himself. Atletico pressed with the remaining time, but found no success and we went to half 1-0 Dortmund.
Atletico turned up the offense to open the 2nd and after a couple close calls, Thomas Lemar had his 1st goal of the year in the 60th, also assisted by the club’s leading scorer, Luis Suarez. Lucho found goal himself in the 78th, a well-executed 1-2 in the Dortmund box giving him an open look from range, 2-1 Atletico.
Surely the Wanda crowd could expect to walk out with a hard-fought 3 points after the comeback, but alas Dortmund were not done. Playing in his first ever SL1 match, Jude Bellingham showed the future promise all at Dortmund hope evolves, maintaining his balance through the Atletico defense and firing a cannon to the far post, beating one of the best in Oblak, with ease.
At 82 minutes, time remained for a possible match winner, and both clubs had chances, but neither managed a high-probability effort down the stretch. A disappointment for Atletico, but it almost feels like a win for Dortmund, especially seeing their young star come through in such a clutch situation. Reus is set to return in MD09, we shall see where Dortmund are then.
