I'm glad I was able to finish this insane gravel bike race near San Diego. It was 212 km long with 3350 m of climbing (132 mi 11,000 ft); That was the Belgian Waffle Ride 2021. Insane. It was so hard with the heat. It cracked me and I thought of giving up many times when the cramps would knock me on the ground in the agony of cramp-hell. But I took breaks and kept going; we had until sunset to finish it. It wasn’t elegant but I finished.
This was all made possible thanks to these good friends who helped me get set on short notice. Alex @alex__gryts for giving me his registration and making me impulsively accept a week before the race 🤣. Nir @bikeimprove for making my bike raceable at the last minute. Roger @kendamtbusa for hooking me up with the best tire strategy. And the supporters & volunteers on the course were amazing at helping us.
Great event! Over 4000 athletes have registered apparently. The Waffle route is a bit too insane maybe though 💀. But great event nonetheless.
It was such a beautiful place to get dirty at. I loved all the dirt & gravel sections. If you want to skip to the first dirt section, skip the video to 0:39:24.

about 40 mins in when your grinding past people on the gravel hill you were 100% sure you had the correct gearing

Unlike Ben. I paid for it dearly this year with my gear choice. Decided to use a crit bike the last minute.53/39-11/30 hurts but over super fun experience 👍

Getting to the dirt first is a big deal!

Totally. I was practically last when I got there because I didn't have the gearing to stay with the pack on the tarmac descents.

Now that you've done this, what gearing do you wish you had?
@bengoyette
@bengoyette 3 жыл бұрын
A cassette with the widest range, then a bigger chainring. Not sure about actual numbers. But I think it’s worth sacrificing with large steps between gears the for a wider range. A front derailleur on a proper gravel bike would have been best, but my cyclocross bike is 1x11 only.

Hey Ben, I need your help. I'm just coming off of a broken collarbone and gonna pick up a 29er trail bike. What are some actual flat greens in LA and OC that are maybe similar to Fullerton but not boring residential park paths (like Fullerton)? I'm looking for new trails but I can't be doing vertical switchbacks in Malibu and Laguna. I just wanna pedal a trail without wearing out my brakes and do some BMX like jibbing on the sides of the trail to build my body back up. Thanks, man. (mostly in LA & OC but willing to drive to SD or SB if it's truly worth it)

Hey Ted, my home trails here in Santa Monica / Topanga State Park seems like a good fit for what you describe. There's good engaging single track that's not steep (Sullivan Canyon, Backbone Trail, MG Trail, Caballero), tons of BMX jibs (Kenter Whoops), slightly more technical stuff (Jedi Jumps, Scorpion), and then steep gnarly enduro segments when you're up to it (Cookies, Monkey Spanker, First Crack, Tasty Treats). With fireroads connecting them all.

Why weave back and forth going up a hill? Seems counterintuitive to energy conservation to me.
@bengoyette
@bengoyette Жыл бұрын
Because there comes a point where it's too steep to keep moving due to the gearing and power + fatigue. So there are two options left: 1) Push the bike or 2) Weave to keep moving. Weaving is faster.
