Super energy efficient ceiling fans
Superfan introduced India’s first super energy efficient ceiling fan in 2012, which consumed less than half the power of a regular ceiling fan while delivering the same airflow. In simpler terms, a regular ceiling fan runs about 13 hours for 1 unit of electricity, Superfan runs about 29 hours for 1 unit of electricity. This increase in efficiency was achieved by Superfan patented BLDC motor design for ceiling fan. If all the regular ceiling fans are replaced with super energy efficient ceiling fans like Superfan then the electricity consumption and environmental impact could be reduced by more than half. This pioneering development was the beginning of a revolution in ceiling fans in India.
Bureau of Energy Efficiency has planned to bring star rating to ceiling fan like ACs in 2022. This improved regulation has forced other brands to embrace energy efficiency as a product requirement and bring about energy-efficient models in their brand.
In 2012, Superfan threw a pebble in the calm waters of the industry creating small waves and by 2020 the small waves have turned into a tsunami. Now energy efficiency is gradually becoming a market driver for fans and is close to the tipping point - the super energy-efficient fan revolution has begun. This is good for our nation in terms of energy independence, minimize environmental impact, and secure the future.
Super energy efficient ceiling fans that are available in the market use the same BLDC technology that Superfan invented with a slight variation. This technology necessitates additional components to achieve its benefits and features, so these types of fans cost a bit more than regular fans. But the initial investment would be paid back in electricity bill savings within a year or two depending on the usage. Moreover, the additional initial cost provides better value than regular ceiling fans like remote operation, stable speed across wide input supply, direct solar compatibility, cooler operation, etc.
In India, there are about 50 Crore fans and they create a demand of about 50Cr* 39W = 19,000 MW demand on our power grid. Each unit of electricity generated in our country produces about 1.2kg of CO2 emission. This would roughly estimate 50000 tons of CO2 emission every day. (This can be further elaborated; I can provide detailed calculations when needed)
Is there a better ceiling fan?
Yes, they are ceiling fans that are powered by a BLDC motor. These types of ceiling fans consume less than 56% power of a regular ceiling fan and thereby reducing the effects mentioned above by more than half. In one unit of electricity, regular ceiling fans run 13 hours but BLDC fans like Superfan run more than 29 hours.
How do we know Superfan saves electricity?
Govt. of India through the Ministry of Power operates an agency called Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) which gives star ratings that indicate the efficiency of appliances with 5-star indicating the highest savings and 1-star lowest. Many would-be are familiar with the star rating in ACs, refrigerators. Similarly, ceiling fans also have a star rating that is based on the efficiency parameter called service value. In-ceiling fans, service value is the ratio of airflow delivered at the highest speed in cubic meter per minute (CMM) to the power consumed at that speed in Watts (W). And BEE has rated all Superfan models as 5-star ceiling fans.
