2021 BMW X1 xDrive28i Review.
The luxury subcompact crossover market hasn't been too kind the Germans, like Mercedes Benz and Audi. The BMW X1 up until last year was outselling the Audi Q3 and Mercedes Benz GLA, but after refreshes to both vehicles the X1 now finds itself to be aging quite a bit. However, the X1 provides a fun driving experience and unrivaled performance, but is that enough to still be the best vehicle in this segment? Let's find out!

How many times is he going to mention “strict budget” and how this car is for people with no money? Nobody with a strict budget is buying a brand new BMW X1!

I agree. We certainly aren't on a "strict budget," but bought an X1 a few months ago because it hit all the points we were looking for. We're loving it!

Thanks so much for such this thoughtful, unrushed, comprehensive review. I am extending my current lease ($244/mo. lol) until January '23 and who knows may even see the refreshed X1 version at that time. After test driving the Volvo XC 40, the Mazda CX30 and CX5, the updated Buick Envision, etc., I find that (for all of the nuanced reasons you pointed to) I may bite the bullet, treat myself to a nice 50th bday mobile, and upgrade from my Encore to the X1 when my lease is up. I have not yet test driven the X1 (due to local lack of availability), but can already see that the MSport package, with its refined touches and ESPECIALLY the slightly more bolstered seats, will be a GREAT fit! Very excited. Love that you were able to articulate the benefits not just of a refined and smooth ride, but of a more dynamic and fun drive for those who enjoy driving. Thanks!

Americans want larger vehicles to help better survive a crash. If you had to crash at 70mph would you want to be in a Smart car or a Navigator?

BMW ranks 30 out of 32 car brands for expensive and frequent maintenance costs. Is X1 any less susceptible? Certainly a car I would lease and leave rather than purchase.
