Now this was a good review of the new Discovery, I mean Defender. The most expensive lunch box transporter around. I did not see anyone else take a London SUV through a flooded field on KZfaq. My respect and salute for this honest review. Man, would I love to have this car, with or without the hybrid battery, I would not care. It is the best looking SUV available right now. Greetings from Germany to all of you in the UK.

Eighty-one thousand pounds? That's Range Rover money for a farm run-around.
@nickbrown6457
@nickbrown6457 3 жыл бұрын
But the way amortisation works in a business (the practice of spreading an intangible asset's cost over that asset's useful life), if the car is really capable (which I think it is from videos I've seen) and lasts for 30 years, then surely it's a really great investment for a farm, even at £81k? The worry is will it last 30 years with all those electrics to go wrong? Also, in truth, to use as a farm run-around workhorse, wouldn't you likely choose a lower spec model, closer to £50k?
@garethleyshon1393
@garethleyshon1393 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickbrown6457 The problem, is that like all modern cars they are full of computers and sensors. Nothing wrong with that, but are they going to be available in 10, 20, 30 Years? Or when you are stuck in the bush, or the centre of Africa. That is the concern / weakness with the new Defender (or the majority of modern vehicles).
@grahamstubbs4962

@@garethleyshon1393 Definitely. I think most of us who care, think the new Defender should have been designed as a vehicle that can be repaired at the roadside if it breaks down, just with a basic toolkit. From what I've seen, this new Defender is definitely not that! But moving into the 2020's and beyond, which new cars can be repaired at the roadside these days?

Thanks for the Land Rover detail, will stick with my 10 year old Discovery me thinks. It pulls the caravan, livestock and plant trailer, plus does the school run and has 7 leather seats. All the very best for 2021.

Disco 4 was a great bit of industrial design, as it was so fit for purpose. Leather seats is an odd one, I've always rated them in regularly used vehicles, like the Disco, RR, etc. as they're easy to keep clean and don't tear or collect dust. Yet most people see them as a luxury item when they're not, especially when fitted in working vehicles..

Yes, ref. Defender you’re focusing on points others aren’t talking about. I’ve got a working Defender TDCI and keen to justify the new model but shocked at the high costs for a muddy tool! To me it’s so sad that the high price makes it an elitist purchase, closely aligned to the LR SUV’s such as Sport! Then there the part canvas seats which yes are an absolute disaster. Glad you’ve pointed out flaws in the 90. Thanks.

I saw on a 4x4 off-road youTube that for true off-roading in out of the way places, air suspension creates a risk if it fails, and basic steel springs are far more reliable. This new defender only has 18” wheels, whereas there are more off-road tyres for 16” wheels! Apparently to fit a front winch after your Defender is built, is next to impossible without damage to the plastic front. The rough & ready basic original Series or Defender Land Rovers were more adaptable to a hard life without the worry of damaging it. I’d choose a Landcruiser or Jeep Wagoner Rubicon for a robust 4x4 off-roader. Unless its only to be used on the school run where I guess most new Defenders will end up.

Excellent and informative as always. The pricing of the Defender was curious when they first came out and the sudden changing of engines for MY21 has added to the confusion. You can’t help comparing to a Discovery Commercial - which has the 6 pot diesel and even well specc’d comes in way under the 110 Defender - and I believe they’re much the same chassis and air suspension. Yes the Defender has some nice practicality features as well as some silly form over function items such as that side mounted useless stowage bin (part of an unnecessary option pack fortunately) but many of my farmer friends are eschewing the Defender in favour of a Discovery, which does seem to make sense.
