As always, the GTSA Club put on a superb days racing for this years British Masters Qualifier, and with 12 spaces up for grabs in the Solo class and 10 for the RH Sidecars, racing was always going to be hard and fast, and on a track that would prove very testing, those who manage to get one of those qualifying spaces would go on to race for the 2021 British Masters at the superb Swingfield circuit in September run by the ASTRA Club.
It is with great anticipation we wait to see if young Jake Mulford who was a sensation in the youth classes, can he do the same in the adults? This young rider looks set for superstar status in the coming years, so this is his chance to shine, but could he actually take this years British Masters Qualifier title? Charlie Powell has taken a while to get to the top flight, but now he is definitely one of the big guns of the sport, so Mulford would have his work cut out if he was going to take the win. Top 500cc Sidecar driver and former Solo rider Mitch Godden makes a rare appearance back on the Solo's to try and make yet another Masters, would his age catch up with him, or would he show the younger riders how it's done? Cheshire man Daniel Winterton is back doing yet another Masters Qualifier, but this Northern rider seems to always be in the mix at any meeting, so should easily grad a place for the Masters.
In the RH Sidecars everyone was waiting to see the new Cornish sensations Thomas & Dillon Newton. These two young brothers have spent the last couple of seasons learning to ride in the "Old & New Sidecar" class, where they've been riding a 500cc machine. This season they have burst onto the 1000cc class with fantastic results at both the Battle of Britain, and the Titans of Tallington meetings. With so much expected of them, would they buckle under the pressure, or would they put up another bold display. The main aim is to qualify for the British Masters, but who knows what will happen when they see the red mist as the tapes go up. Former Masters champions Rob Wilson/Terry Saunters look to be one of the favourites for this meeting, but they will have to contend with Tom Cossar & Wayne Rickards, winners of this event for the last 2 runnings, and they are improving every season, so Rob may have to give way to the younger riders coming through. Neal Owen/Jason Farwell love this track, and their Godden powered machine roars round here like a lion, and this beautiful sounding machine thrives in wet conditions, but would it be wet enough for them to sine through? Joe Sturtridge/Shaun Hoskin seem to be going better than ever this season, Joe putting it down to having a decent bit of kit now. They look almost certain a grabbing a qualifying position, but this meeting is notorious for hard luck stories. Clint Blondel all the way from Guernsey, Matt Fumarola, Tom Marvell, Joe Mogg, Billy Winterburn, Ian Lee-Amies, Trevor Heath, and Anthony Sales all should be in the shake-up, in what looks a very open Sidecar class.
With a cracking LH Sidecar support class, which includes 5 Penfold crews (just like the old days), great racing was assured, with Martin Cuff, Alex Balman, Rob Heath, and Steve North all adding to the excitement.
