The all-new 2021 Ducati Multistrada gets a V4 motor, a 19-inch front wheel and some wizz-bang electronics. Is that enough to shake its rivals?

not sure I'd trust it completely myself, but respect that Ducati have put the time into implementing it as a usable feature and for sure would give it a go at the very least.

We're down with it. For long trips where fatigue will always set in it'll be a nice feature. But around town in the UK. Definitely would not want it activated.

Think I agree with Revzolution. If I were to go across Europe which I've done before on a bike, it'll be nice knowing that it's there as after a whole day's riding, mental fatigue definitely sets in. Especially in the heat

Cant say i saw much there to make me spend 21k to replace the bike i have already toured Europe, took off road (only dropped it once) , track days and all year commuting. The V4 service intervals will appeal to many compared the the costly Desmo services ......... Add to that somebody made a bike vid for 44 teeth and didnt spanner themselves , happy days :)

Long term MTS owner here - 10 years, 3rd bike (1200 Gen 1, Gen 2 and 1200 DVT) and have ridden over 50k glorious miles on them. I never looked at the regular Multi as an 'Adventure' bike - it's a fast sit-up sports-tourer that's taken me all over the UK and Europe - the DVT Enduro model could be classed is an 'Adventure' bike but Ducati haven't sold that many of them in comparison to the road going versions. I was looking forward to the V4 version to the point of holding off upgrading to a 1260 but I am extremely underwhelmed with this. No desmo, less torque, only 10 bhp more, no single sided swing-arm, 19" front wheel, smaller fuel tank, worse fuel economy/range and I don't think it looks as good as the V2 either. Ducati are clearly chasing the GS market and I can't blame them for doing this but I think they've moved the bike too far towards off-road'. As for the abundance of technology ? Impressive but far too much IMHO. All it's missing is a head-up display (joke) to help keep the riders eyes out of the cockpit ! The tech level on my DVT is just fine for me. Well worth a test-ride but a change to 4 cylinders from 2 is very unlikely.

After 4 years of Multistrada ownership having previously had the 1200S Touring and a 1260S Touring, the addition of a 19" wheel has just taken this bike completely off my watch list. Having ridden the Panigale V4S after it's launch I'd been waiting and waiting for a V4 version of the Multistrada to logically turn up at some point. I have always wanted a comfortable sports bike and not an off road bike and had been wavering toward the BMW S1000XR for a long while, but a few niggles (handle bar vibes, etc) had put me off and so I stuck with the Multistrada, because of the 17" front wheel and the tyre choices that it provides and the nimbler 17" front wheel. I got fed up of waiting for a V4 and after being forced to trade my Multistrada in due to reliability issues (and a general lack of local Ducati dealer in North London), I ended up getting a Yamaha Tracer 900 GT along with a proper sports animal for the weekend (Kawasaki H2). I'd been hoping that eventually a Multistrada V4 would turn up, because logically it had to at some point, but the fact that it is now no longer a sports bike by virtue of the fact that it has a stupid 19" front wheel means that I am now completely done as a Ducati customer for the foreseeable future. Well done Ducati, way to completely alienate your customers and ignore the reason they bought a Multistrada in the first place!
@carlosandleon

Well the Multistrada was always marketed as an adv tourer, not a sports tourer anyway. I think the Tracer 900 is the perfect replacement for what you're looking for.

I test ride one yesterday, a V4S Ducati Aust bike. Unfortunately it was fitted with Motoz Tractionator Rallyz tyres, which hindered its road manners a lot. After owning four 1200 Multis and one 950, I walked away disappointed overall. We rode both road and gravel roads over a 45 minutes test ride. Suspension off road was too hard on factory settings, I’m 97kg. I think with the standard tyres, or better road tyres on it it’d be a better bike. Overall, I’d stick with a twin, or give the KTM 1290S a go.

I found Ducati's own fuel economy specs for the 1260 and the new V4. What I'm seeing is that you're gaining 12 horsepower, on a bike that already had more horsepower than you could realistically use on the street anyway. But in the process you're LOSING 20% of your fuel economy. And pumping out 30% more CO2 (if you care about it). Another way of looking at it: the money you'll be saving on the extended service intervals...you'll be spending on extra fuel. So you're gaining...what? Yes, I understand that other things have been improved, although the new bike weighs slightly more overall. This "improved" model doesn't seem so compelling.

That rear radar sounds mint. I can think of one time when I was lucky to notice at the last minute, some car driving cunt that was switching from the third lane on a UK motorway to the second, right parallel to me on my bike (with my girlfriend on the back), while I was about to overtake a car in front of me on the 1st lane. That was on an empty road, zero traffic... and that car cunt was fast. This kind of rear radar would have warned me trouble was coming. Brilliant stuff, and excellent explanation of the feature. Cheers lads.

Same thought. I came off a KTM Adventure S and went 7/8th size with the Superduke GT/17" wheel. I will never see even a gravel road. I THOUGHT this Multi would get me to look it over but the 10 mpg less mileage and smaller tank and it's heavier, slightly higher seat-- where the new KTM SD GT (V.3) will be lighter and have even more power and get the fuel mileage with a bigger tank and a lower seat and 17" wheel and greater cost of the Ducati (guessing about $4000 in USA with bags).... I guess I'll LOOK at the Multi--but will wait for the new KTM GT. The new KTM Adventure S will be the direct competitor. Decided all the adventure bikes are just too much sheer MASS. Oh--HOW did the motor RUN? Seems little was said about that--other than poor gas mileage..

My car has front and rear radar (adaptive cruise control) which 90% of the time is great............. However, let’s suppose you’re on a dual carriageway, long sweeping right hander (this bits important) travelling at speed about to overtake a few slow moving trucks. The radar can only see in straight lines, so instead of seeing a clear lane 2, it picks up the slow moving trucks in lane 1 and applies the brakes, depending on where the trucks are how fast your going etc. In the car it also has crash avoidance tech and sometimes it can really haul on the brakes if it thinks you’re going into the trucks, assume the bike wouldn’t be as hard on the brakes but it’s definitely not foolproof. Advantages - you can set the radar to maximum sensing which helps in severe downpours and fog it can see beyond your own visibility (but seriously when it’s like that I’ll be in the car anyway). Rear radar - good idea and can see that helping, front radar is good and once you get to know where it fucks up you’ll learn to override it by touching the brake and knocking off the cruise. I love this bike, but can understand why some would find all the tech a bit pointless - great review had me laughing👍

.If it's anything like my 2015 1200S, it's a POS: lousy suspension (wants to do tank slappies all the time) dangerous throttle maps (any old lady in a Prius can out drag you at the lights) unintended acceleration in first and second gear (usually there is no power in these gears, then suddenly it's full blast for no reason) most parts are made out of cocoa tin; I did an oil change at 5,000 miles - there was a pile of metal on the magnetic drain plug - the longest piece 3/16 inch.

The advance of valve spring technology and the reduction in weight of valves and retainers means Desmo valve actuation has been a pointless expensive frivolity for at least 20 years. You just don't need all that complication - valve float and bounce are not an issue any more - not at the sort of revs large capacity engines run at anyway.

As someone who has no interest in going offroad (as with most Multistrada owners, I suspect) I'll stick with my 2016 1200S, single sided swingarm and 17" front wheel. Desmo I could take or leave. I'd bet as many or more "regular" Multi owners (as opposed to enduro) do track days as want to do serious off-roading, guess which owners got left behind? What was wrong with making 2 separate models for sport touring and offroad?

If you never, ever make a mistake then, fair enough, you don’t need the blind spot warning... For the rest of us normal mortals, however, I think it can only be a good thing. But I’m not convinced by cruise control on a bike at all, even though I’ve had it on my XR for two years. The most I use it for is sticking to 30 and 40 limits and, even then, I find myself constantly hovering over the clutch, ready to disengage it. As motorcyclists we need to be far more aware of developing situations than 99% of car drivers. I’m usually looking several cars ahead of me, not just at the one in front (as the radar would be). How many times have you taken defensive action (braking or manoeuvring to a different road position) before the drongo in front has looked up from his phone and realised there is a problem ahead he should have noticed 2 seconds earlier (when he panics, slams on the anchors and starts wondering where he can get some clean underpants)? As for allowing that driver to effectively set my speed for me as we play “radar controlled follow my leader”? NO THANKS!

This guy reviewed SLeggera V4 in a flip flops and swimming trousers, I thought he was banned by Ducati afterwards.

Question. I tried the Multistrada 950s and I didn't buy because vibrations were like having a blender up my arse. I was about to buy a BMW R1250RS but this new Multistrada V4 is really a catch. Still I want a bike which doesn't make me feel more vibrations than the BMW R1250RS. Does this new Multistrada V4 vibrates less or more than the R1250RS?

I think I'd rather a more dirt orientated 950 multi but I suppose they are trying to pinch some of the GS1250 sales. Kinda leaves a gap in the market. I don't think a lot of old multi owners will be side stepping to the new model. Especially when it doesn't look as good.

So the question for me is... Is this an ADV bike or a sport tourer or both? I do a lot of touring. All types of roads. Been a serial Multistrada owner for years, but recently went down the BMW rabbit hole. I love Ducati (my track bike is a V4S) but should I buy this baby now?

This was the best info I’ve seen yet. Very much appreciate. Just another option besides the 950 S, 1260 S and enduro models...Ducati is not making this any easier on me.
@ranty13

The 950 is not a smaller 1260, it's higher, wider and has a higher center of gravity. More of an all-terrain bike than the 1260. Being shorter, 5'6" I couldn't get the 900 off the side stand. The 1260 just about tilted upright on its own. Strange that the smaller bike is for taller riders. Understand about the difficult decisions. 1200s are now more affordable, 1260s are really nice and now the 4vs !!

Do you live in the outback or siberia? How much tank range do you need? And what's wrong with a chain, it should last 20000 miles with care and maintenance. The main issue with this bike is that (like most big adv bikes) it's completely pointless for doing actual adventuring

Both champion chaps - and rather nice and clasy chesterfield (?) suite. When this v4, the expected Tiger 1200 update and probable ktm 1290 updates ate available, a good 'trip' with these bikes plus a GS and chad to make four would be a top trumps vid.
