2021 F150 Trailer Brake Controller Instal and ForScan update

do at your own risk. first time I've used Forscan as well. brakes seemed to be engaging, but I haven't been on the road yet ti test. I could hear the brakes engage though, so hopefully we're good to go.

I just finished setting up mine on a 2021. Had to buy extended license for Forscan to allow the change, $12, no biggie, good for one year. I disconnected everything and, shut off ignition, locked doors, etc. twice. Checked and it is all enabled. Thank you Kevin for posting the video!!

Is there any update on the brake controller? Everything I read on f150gen14 says to do it through the as built. But it looks like you just enabled it the easy way.

Does anyone know if I must change the brake module under the dash ? I’ve added the trailer brake gain Controller , and trying to turn on the module with forscan ? I got a 2023 F150 And used parts from another 2023 F150 in just trying to turn on the module to the truck knows we have trailer brakes now 😊

I’ve got a 2022 f150, that I want to add the controller too. Did you only have to turn the ICPM- trailer brake controller module to enabled? My dealer is saying it’s back ordered, but I can find the OEM for sale online and I’m looking to order it, I’ve never messed with Forscan before

You need to load your as built from the old module thru forscan to initialize the new module. Then you can go thru the forscan documentation and set the module to start working correctly with your truck options for trailer brake control (i.e bcm, ipc apim, trm, ipma ,. If you don’t do this you will have a hard dtc that will not clear until trailers brake module is set up correctly. The dtc will not be a light on dash, only stored.. all that said there is more to it then using the standard English setup in forscan..

So what's the total damage, 210 for controller than the obdlink gadet at 149? What's the ford scan software cost?

I think the parts were around 300 or so when I got them. Software was free but I got the $20 version and I think that cable was around $30 or so

My 2021 did not come with the tow package and they say it’s impossible because it’s the hybrid. That was a year ago since I last checked. Is this something I can add now?

Mine is an hybrid as well, I just finished my setup, no issues so far.

Kevin good vid appariciate showing us. So I ordered brake controller & modular and it arrived today. I paid $243.00 Did I pay to much? Please if you could provide where you purchased your's from. I have a 2023 which should be the same. Thanks

If you don’t mind me asking do you know the ford part # you ordered as I have a 23’ XLT and wanting to add the controller as well, truck has hitch, 7 pin as well as the backup alert! Don’t know if that matters but seeing different ones on dealer sites. Thanks a lot.

You paid the right amount. At the Ford dealership they want $350 for it plus another $300 to install and enable.

Much to my surprise they sure did. I did read online there is a way to run extra power to the module, but I needed to knock it out quick. New module and controller, sold the old one online.

When I ordered it online, there was one part number too, but in the box was the two parts with their own part number. If you order from the dealership you'll be good, anywhere else, just verify you get the controller and module.

@@kevinpark5474 thank you for the reply. I have two different part numbers in order smh. Neither of which are that one! My dealer and the other two nearby all say different things. Not to mention both are on back order. Going to try and order this part number and see what happens! Fingers crossed. Thanks again for the reply! Be well.

@Joseph Briggs I read on a Facebook forum just a few weeks ago that they changed the part number for these controllers. Not sure if they made an update or what to the part. I'll see if I can find that post and link it. I haven't had any issues though - had to drive past 5 dealerships to find one in stock when I bought it.

It's worked without any issues. ProbBly towed 5 or 6 weekends since then.

Gotta be something with Forscan then. When I did this process it was glitchy for a few days, not sure how to explain honestly, and then it worked fine. I read an F150 Forum post with the same experience

@@kevinpark5474 How I install Ford OEM brake controller on my 2021. 1. Install latest version of Forscan with free extended license. 2. Launch Forscan, go into the TRM (as built ) and save all for your TRM backup. Exit Forscan. 3. Install the OEM brake controller hardware. 4. Launch Forscan, go into the TRM (as built) and load and write your backup from step 2. 5. Clear and reload DTC errors 6. Go into the TRM and enable the brake controller option and write it. 7. Go into IPC and enable (trailer brake, trailer brake controller and trailer brake gains). Write it. It should now work without the DTC errors.

@@romariopedraza2530 it does work, I finally got mine to work the first time it didn’t take so I turned the truck off disconnected. The device exited the program on the computer and redid it the second time it worked like a charm.
