The 2021 Kawasaki Versys 650 LT pairs Team Green’s engineering capabilities and proven reliability with simplicity in a go-anywhere-anytime platform. This middleweight Versys has been a staple of Kawasaki’s sport-touring lineup since its inception in 2009 and continues to prove its worth.

Powered by the same 649cc parallel-twin engine as seen in Kawasaki’s Ninja 650 and Z650 models, the Versys packs a punch of approachable, yet engaging power delivery. Ran on the in-house Motorcyclist dyno, the Versys 650 LT produced 59.6 hp at 8,100 rpm and 41.6 pound-feet of torque at 7,200 rpm. Modest figures, for sure, but the linear delivery and tabletop-flat torque curve makes for tractable power in real-world testing and flexibility in gear selection. It does, however, have its shortcomings. An abrupt on/off throttle transition requires a delicate touch and can become an annoyance in slow-speed scenarios, and the six-speed gearbox requires serious effort to initiate gear changes.
An in-command rider triangle adds to an engaging riding experience aboard the Versys. The reach to the wide, one-piece motocross-style handlebar is relaxed and offers strong leverage, while the relatively sporty footpeg position finds a balance of an aggressive lower-body stance and comfort. Our 5-foot-7 tester found no issue with the measured 33.2-inch seat height, comfortably touching with both feet. The adjustable windscreen offers a smooth pocket of air at highway speeds, though on-the-fly adjustment would be welcomed.
The Versys 650 utilizes a very basic analog tachometer and LCD display to relay important information to the rider. While the simplicity of the setup is appreciated, it is also a sign that the Kawasaki is growing long in the tooth. The last significant update to the Versys was made in 2015.
Light steering effort and a well-balanced chassis highlights the Versys 650′s handling. Despite tipping the Motorcyclist scales at a relatively heavy 500 pounds with a full tank of fuel, the Kawasaki is easily maneuverable and only requires light steering effort to shred the canyon roads or navigate dense traffic. The Showa fork is adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping, while the shock features preload adjustability. The pair does a decent job of soaking up the road’s imperfections, but lacks big-hit support for significant bumps and G-out sections. Improved suspension calibration would be a warm welcome.
The Versys 650 is brought to a halt via a pair of Nissin two-piston calipers clamping to 300mm discs up front and a single-piston rear caliper. Outright stopping power is adequate and quickly sheds speed, but lacks brake feel at the lever. A swap to an aftermarket brake pad may solve the issue. ABS is standard on all Versys 650 models and offers smooth intervention.
Kawasaki offers the Versys 650 in its base trim ($8,399), as well as the up-spec LT model ($9,299) as tested in this review. The LT is equipped with a set of 28-liter hard saddlebags and OE-equipped hand guards for added wind protection. The saddlebags add a degree of functionality to the Versys with a significant amount of storage and ease of use. Kudos, Team Green.
The Kawasaki Versys 650 LT is a tried-and-true middleweight sport-tourer. Sure, the basic build shows its age, but approachable performance and capability reminds us why it has been a staple of Team Green’s lineup for so many years.

@@Dave-sw2dm I was planning to use Shoodabeen Engineering's services but I'll be selling my Versys 650 soon ☹️ Fwiw, my other planned upgrades were going to be a Traxxion Dynamics AK-20 suspension kit for the front forks, a Penske rear shock, steel braided brake lines and a Magura front master cylinder.

i got the 2020 version of this bike and it is my first bike. Im 6ft6, 1m98cm and can flatfoot is pretty easely with spare room. I fit pretty well on it. I also tried yamaha tracer 700 and suzuki vstrom but i was very cramped on those. Versys worked good! Im still very happy with it and now 1.5 years later it still amuses me when i twist the throttle fully :) I recomend it if you like a comfy bike that is not too scary but can still give some decent "WOOOOOOW LETSGO" moments.

@@JohannesDalenMC I do 2 up riding on mine, with the wife, all the time. I'm 210 lbs, she is 135 lbs. We load up the top case & saddle bags... I barely notice her on the back when moving. It's a little top heavy at low speed or stops, but nothing serious. Plenty of power to get us moving quick & she hasn't complained about any comfort issues.

I think you're a bit confused -- the V-Strom is notably larger/longer than the Versys and is one of the few midsize ADV style bikes that riders over 6ft tall can stretch out on. This info is consistent with other reviews.

@@jordanblair5410 well, on the vstrom my legs were not in the right spot at the tank. My legs were too high on the side of the tank and didnt fit in the "designed spot for your legs to be" when i put my feet on the pegs. 6ft+ is 6ft1 aswell. 6ft6 is quite a bit taller The vstrom might be bigger than the versys but it was cramped. I tried it. Could be different for everyone but thats how it was for me.

I disagree about the display, if anything more models need to revert to the more basic but fun functional analog gauges and simple warning lights. Everything doesn't need to be kitted out like a GS1200 adventure with all the goodies, some of us want a basic, reliable, affordable motorcycle.

Agreed, I've got a Z1000, doesn't even have abs, whenever I think about trading in for a new bike, and have a test ride, you spend the first 10 minutes being shown how to set up the different settings for traction control, anti wheelie, etc etc, took out the ZZR1400, and told the salesman to switch everything off, he thought i was crazy, 🤣🤣

Yes! I’ve noticed there are bikes that the younger online reviewers are dinging all the time for not having the latest full color TFT displays. I don’t want to be caught out staring at a fancy display while I’m riding. No more than I want to be distracted by a smart phone mounted on the bars. Analog is better, simple and quick at a glance, then eyes back on the road!

@@shugd3 I have to disagree completely. Just a few buttons on the steering wheel. 10 minuter read in the manual or youtube and you'll know anything lmfao. Just put in a little effort and you'll enjoy the benefits that those buttons give you.

The Versys 650 was introduced in 2007. It came to the United States in 2008. Had a blue 2009 which i loved then later got a 2016 Versys 1000 which i liked even more....

Just rewatched this video as I was thinking of changing my bike. Its a 2019 Versys 650GT which I've had from new and have covered 27000 miles on it. This video reminds me why I bought it, the bike does everything I need, in comfort, without fuss, and totally reliably. I guess I'll just keep it for a few more years then buy the latest version. There really isn't anything out there which does it better for the money.

Bought a 2018 Versys 650GT, only use for fast holiday blast, 5,200 grin filled miles, totally pleased with my purchase. A very under estimated bike,

Love my 2017 650 LT. A simple bike with just enough there to keep me coming back to it. I changed out the seat to a Sargent this year and I can really eat up the miles.

I have a 2019 and I was really looking at getting the Sergent seat. I’m looking at getting the low-profile saw that I set an inch lower because the bike is just a little bit too tall for me. Is that what you got? And how comfortable is the seat? Is it worth the $500?

I have a 2018 non-LT model. You're right about the on/off throttle...it can be troublesome in parking lot turns. Most reviews don't mention how top heavy the bike is. Then throw a 5.5 gallon tank (40lbs) up high...then the high seat height. Slow speed turns and parking lot stuff can be difficult. The bike wants to tip...FAST. None of that matters over about 15mph. Above parking lot speeds, the bike is great. You sit up high and upright. The bike has minimal vibrations. More power than I'll ever need. I would NOT recommend it as a first bike.

It would be a crying shame though if they cut the fuel tank when the revise it. The range is a huge plus on this bike. As for top heaviness, it’s still far far better than many of the large ADV bikes as it’s generally lighter. They’re all pretty top heavy. I had a Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX prior to the Versys 650 and once that one started to tip there was nothing stopping it with it’s weight. At least the Versys I can stop it if it tips as it’s light enough. I would have never bought it had they put a 4-4.5 gallon tank on it which wouldn’t make that much difference but killed the range. I’ve owned the Tiger 1050 (very similar weight and 5.3 gal tank, felt nearly identical but with double the power and much less range) and the Vstrom 650 as well. Versys 650 is my favorite of all of them and the range is a killer feature imo.

Try 2nd gear instead of 1st when doing slow maneuvers, less torquey & less jumpy throttle.

I ride a 2020 Versys and im 6'4 340 and this bike rides fantastic my only complaint is the windscreen is not tall enough for me but thats a easy fix. and the clunky 6 speed that likes to go to neutral instead of 2nd from time to time, usually in front of the ladies. The adjustable rear shock is a plus. I've put Shinko 705 tires on my bike as i do some dirt road riding around the Rocky Mountains near the national park. I LOVE MY VERSYS...

I am 6'2" and yes, the windshield is too small so I added an extension which I tilt forward which helps a lot with wind noise reduction. So, I'm not the only one with the first to neutral problem. I thought it was because I changed the skinny stock foot pegs for wider, more robust ones. I also run Shinko 705s and am on my 2nd rear already. Good tires for multi purpose riding, fast, slow, sand, gravel, the Outer Hebrides... I also added GIVI crash bars, heated grips, an extended luggage rack, USB and 12V power plug ins and just short of 24,000 km. The Kawasaki Versys is likely the best all around purpose bike which is ideal for older riders in particular. I am 73.5.

Had the 2016 GT since new with 14,000 miles so far mostly touring and its never missed a beat , i would like Kawasaki to introduce an 850cc version of this which would be cool however for solo touring this machine is a solid budget build

I've spent plenty of time on one of our customers versys 650's over the years (we always test ride bikes we work on) and yeah, they're a basic bike, but they just work. It's not a bike that's particularly great at any 1 thing, but it'll do everything you want it to. On the 1st gen model, the only downside was chassis rust, im not sure if that's been sorted on newer models, but the older one's got rusty pretty easily.

You had some criticism's of the suspension and yet the ride quality from most tests are very good. The reason it has fully adjustable suspension is to dial it in. Once found the ideal settings for person weight and preferences this is a back road blaster. More power on Versys 1000, but much more weight, ideal for 2 up touring. For solo work the 650 is a wolf in sheep's clothing !!

I remember when the dealer told me that I should buy a versys 650 and have more fun on that instead of the ZX10R. I bought the ZX10R... Years later I finally bought the Versys and wished I had listened to him earlier 😁

2:15 the LT didn’t exist until 2015. The first generation Versys was 2007 but not available until 2008 in the US. The first update was 2010 and then 2015 was the second.

Still a damn good bike, one of the best I’ve ridden and a personal favorite. Sadly it’s mostly overlooked in the US market. It is overdue for an big update though.

@@mindspinn311 true, they forgot to update/improve the engine. Should have around 900 cc & 100+ hp. Kawi could've used a tuned down z900 inline 4 motor & gave us cruise control.

Kawasaki tends to not make changes just to make changes. That 650 has been around for a while and it's damn near bullitt proof. The ONLY Sport Bike I would ever consider owning is the 650. I actually want every model of the 650 Kawasaki makes.

The 2016 model was my first bike. I can only recommend it. Did not even test ride it, bought it based on recommendations. But i did not have my license yet when I came across a good deal.

Hi! The Versys 650 was on my list when I was about buying my commuter.... Now I regret that I prefered the NC 750. Versys would have been a better option. I wish you all only nice and safe rides!

imo the Honda makes only sense if you want DCT. Otherwise the Versys is surely the better option

This bike consistently gets great reviews on both sides of the pond. Its looking a bit dated now though I guess... wonder if we'll see an update at EICMA this year with the Tiger 660 joining the fray?

Great review Michael but as I mentioned in one of Adam's reviews before, I don't get it why You guys have to use high beam all the time? If a car driver isn't looking for you as a motorcyclist at an intersection, then they won't see you better with high beam either.. Instead You are just blinding oncoming traffic, which just pisses most people off IMO. If you want higher visibility, a high vis jacket/vest or a helmet would draw much more attention to you. Hence most cop cars, emergency vehicles have such paint or stickers on them. I know it is not cool to wear those colors, and most riders like to wear all black, but it really makes the difference in terms of visibility.

@@kleinbottled79 Well it's just my personal opinion, and experience. I'm not trying to find faults of anyone, especially considering that it seems like it's a US thing to run low beam and high beam simultaneously all the time (day&night) on a motorcycle. Since I'm not living in the US it's not a big deal. I was just curious what the reason behind this is. I do like MC commutes, I really appreciate all the work/testing they do but this is what I always see on their videos. About visibility: nothing beats a high vis yellow or orange color on your clothing/vehicle. High beam is worth nothing during the day, if someone is on an angle say 60°-90°.., coming from a side road, or if you're turning in dense traffic and your lights are covered by the vehicle in front of you. This is why police, emergency, fire engines all wear these colors. Or I could mention construction workers. It's a must on many workplaces because that is the ultimate visibility tool. I'm both a rider and a driver, riding about 20K miles/year and I cannot stand if someone is using their high beam unnecessarily. Whether they are doing it day or night. This is why when riding at night, I'm always using a light smoked visor, because many idiots blinding me and at that stage(for many seconds) I can't see anything from the road or traffic ahead and around me. That is not only painful, but super dangerous too. Especially nowadays, those LED light bars a getting very cheap and popular on trucks and 4X4'S. That's so freaking bright, it's the worst for other road users. So if this kinda people don't dim their lights, I simply put my high beam on until they realize what they are doing. That usually helps but not always.

Given that I have several different glasses (clear, transition, and dark) with me when riding or driving depending on the lighting conditions, yeah, they are pretty light sensitive. And if you are so inconsiderate of others on the road when everyone can clearly see your headlight in the low mode, then no, I don't care if you are there any longer. It is now a matter of you don't care about others, I don't care about you. Think about it sometime. Next time someone is inconsiderate to you, do you treat them with respect back? And since honesty is so important to you, I will assume any answer you give here that I won't bother returning to will be honest.

@@kleinbottled79 true, the high beam of a bike can't be compared with crazy brightness off a modern LED light bar on a truck. However that doesn't change the fact that if someone is paranoid about visibility and definitely wants to be noticed by others on the road then the high vis colors will keep them safer than a high beam. I usually don't wear high vis either, also just use my low beam on my bikes when riding. But I clearly noticed the difference when the weather turned bad and I put on my rain gear which has some high vis colors, cars stop pulling out on me at intersections and other places and keep more distance. This is just my experience..

My first bike was a 1972 Yamaha XS650. Bought used in 1975 would love to have it back . Rode it to Toronto Canada from Lansing Michigan twice. I was reality tough dumb and young. My point is just get on that bike and do it. I'm 68 now close to 500k on bikes live in Michigan so we are half timmers have @ 600k on bikes greatest time other than warersking. 😅 Just pack your bags don't make reservations and go towards dreams and have fun.😊

Not all of us are rich. But I also don't live in Orange county. My horse is cheaper than most motorcycles (he was free, just paying for hay, supplements, and shoes)

Its because of the exhaust being mounted under the engine. For the versys they should have put a more normal length exhaust on, so they could have fitted a center stand as well. If it ever gets updated, maybe they'll sort that issue.

Solid, honest review. Lots to like about this bike but...Two things are needed to update this V650LT and make it more serviceable. First, it needs to be powered up to 750-850cc; second, cruise control is a must have. Maybe the instrumentation could be updated too. Then we've got something. Let's go Kawasaki.

He is reviewing my bike. I bought my 2021 Versys new at the end of July in 2022. The longest day I was with my bike was 18 hours last summer when I had to escape the fires in BC. The farthest I rode it in a single day was 750 km. You can do that sort of thing with a Versys 650. The fastest I clocked it was 180 km/hr. An American rider with a GPS clocked me on the Banff/Jasper Parkway at 110 miles per hour. The Kawasaki Versys 650 can do it all. You should watch me launch it. I am a block and a half ahead before the automobilers get the idea the light has changed. The bike is not too heavy and I can pick it up, which I have had to do five times, so far. My bike, since it is a versatile motorcycle has seen some rough terrain as well as highways and biways. The scars it bears shows the bike is providing me with adventures. In another 100 km it will have 24,000 km on the odometer. Riding season is just beginning in Alberta in my 73rd year. If life is boring get a motorcycle. If you want to have it all, get a Versys 650 with panniers. Best bike I have owned.

Just an FYI, Kawasaki brought the Versys to the US in late 07 for an 08 model (red in color). It was not 50 state legal. In 2009 (Blue and Green Colors) slight updates and 50 state legal.

Owned a 650 Strom and also travelled 2600 klms(1615 miles) on a hire 650 versys . Similar bikes both comfortable. Versys has 17inch front as compared to 19inch on VStrom. I felt the steering was quicker due to this

Agree - I've found the Versys to steer quicker and feel smaller. I prefer the Suzuki's engine though - better sound and feels smoother, and I think the torque curve is broader.

I always find myself wanting to try more power and bikes but it hasn’t even been a year yet, I guess that feeling is normal for riders haha

It all depends on how much their R&D cost and how much profit is being made. If they had to design a new engine and/or frame, it's probably gonna be a while before they can start as that is a very expensive process, so they have to make their money back first. Japanese brands like to usually play it safe from a business perspective, so if the bikes continue to sell well they don't bother trying to update them so they can make as much profit as possible until the numbers start dropping. Also keep in mind a good chunk of R&D money goes into emissions compliance, as regulations get more and more strict (Euro ones are usually the most strict) it becomes harder to meet them, so they're forced to dump way more money into engine and exhaust design than is otherwise needed. tl;dr minor cosmetic update? Probably 2-5 years. New engine/frame? Probably a very long time.

Just did a 280 mile day trip, West coast 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, on my Z1000, first tank of the new E10 petrol, one stop was 120 miles, to top up the tank was just over 2 gallons, averaging 55/60 MPG, so 42 from the 650 is pretty bad 👍

Came to Germany at the end of 2006. I had one of the first models; ugly as hell, but easy to ride like a mountain-bike. Never was slowest when riding with "stronger" bikes.

You didn't mention any vibration. Another tester complained about vibration in the handle bars and up through the seat. I know that any twin has some but he was complaining about his hands nearly going to sleep. I had a Concourse back in the 90s that was miserable in that respect.

Same but I needed something that could have a top box and panniers for commuting to work along side my cbr but the versys 650 and the tracer 700 are the only 2 routers I can really fit on, the versys 1000 is a lot taller and i reccomend you sit on them, the tracer 700 is similar height to the mt07

Waiting on versys 800 or 900 with the z900rs engine comparable in power to the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT. Also with all the modern features as well such as: TFT dash, center stand, led lights, cruise control, & heated grips. All with the msrp of around $14000. Or a versys 650 Lt SE edition with TFT, cruise control, center stand, performance exhaust.

@@matts4852 yes, but a smaller more affordable option compared to the 1000. $9000 650 bike to the $18000 bike is a big jump in cost. Having a price option towards the middle of those two bikes is where the versys 900 would need to be. I think Yamaha did it right and split the difference with the Tracer 9 Gt.

More power, less torque than my cruiser Vulcan 900 V twin, makes sense as it gets its power at higher R's.. But more power is interesting, also greater fuel economy but not the same sound at all as a V twin. I'd like to ride one and test it out. I am afraid that jerky throttle you say is a minor issue will be a deal breaker for me. I sold a car because of it. They need to program more throttle indexing points when implementing servo throttling.

If you grow tired of a motorcycle because it's slow, you are riding for the wrong reason. I've had quite a few different bikes the fastest being a Yamaha fz1, I currently own a 2020 versys 300. I've put 10k on it and I feel like I'm just getting started. The only time I feel like it's "underpowered" is when I'm passing on the highway. Other than that it will absolutely do anything I ask it too

My daily driver is a Yamaha xj750j 1983 vintage compared to the xj the price tag shocked me a little my first bike was a parallel twin 400 Kawasaki loved its bullet proof reliability but my i 4 kz500 was also i think its time for a upgrade:) i am 5'6" with a 29" inseam at first my xj was a reach but i got used to it:)

On ours the suspension feels like it just muddled through vs dealing with the bumps. Great commuter bike and fuel friendly just not sporty.

Well, you said you want to hear from people. I have had a phone+KZfaq for a year and have viewed over 100 motorcycle reviews. And I know I am in the minority here, but I am sick+tired of superficial reviews that focus on sound and looks and girly nonsense. For the rider that must do their own services and take long hauls, I care about ease of maintenance, changing chains+sprockets, height suitability, touring ability, off road ability, durability, etc. I don't give a damn about superficial things. I want to see what people think when they have serviced the bike, changed filters, plugs, oils, chains, etc. When they have adjusted the steering head bearings and lubricated the wheel bearings and swingarm, and maybe changed the tires and brakes. All these KZfaq reviews do is offer candy for people that have money to do everything for them. And I don't even consider that to be a genuine motorcycle enthusiast. Anyway, I am really fed up. The superficial girly reviews are just BS to me. I could watch Doodle on a motorcycle and gleam the same content.

Putting it all to the test.. Even the high-beam it seems ^o^ I´m happy, but surprised, no road raging car-driver "brake-tested" you :o Also, remember to use those turn signals..It only takes one car close behind you, not knowing your gonna slow down to turn, to send you flying.. It´s all these little things that´ll truly make you safe in traffic, not the electronics really... Other than that, thanks for making the vids. I'm tired of people calling the throttle jerky. The tolerances on motorcycles these days are very tight. That includes the electronic mapping and throttle response. It's not jerky, it's very precise! You have to get away from ham-fisting today's motorcycle throttles and brakes. The technology is a far cry from the 80's. Ever since the advent of fuel injection it's just been a matter of tweaking from an engineering perspective. While cruising, a minor twitch if my wrist gives a one mile an hour increase. I also rarely find myself correcting the throttle while cruising. It holds speed, period. I have no wrist fatigue at all with this bike. Major accomplishment. I did the ECU flash, PAIRS valve block, etc on my Ninja 650. Total waste of money. But the aftermarket Hindle exhaust sounded awesome. I didn't need to really go any further. The stock ECU can handle the exhaust change. I traded in my 2020 Ninja 650 for the 2021 Versus 650. It's more upright, more comfortable, and with a 5.5 gallon tank I easily get 250 miles with a half gallon left at the pump. That's commuting 50 miles a day at 75mph. I consistently get 50-52mpg. I think you should upshift a couple gears if you're getting 42mpg. The extra height of the rider puts the central mass of the Versus low in comparison to the Ninja. I find myself leaning this bike over more without it feeling like I'm leaning over. I find myself more confident and going faster on the same roads I always have fun with. The suspension travel is longer, giving it a softer initial ride. But the suspension is highly adjustable compared to the non-adjustable Ninja front end. The stock tires on mine were Dunlop Sportmax. Honestly, I usually hate stock tires, but these had good wet and dry grip and lasted to 6,000 miles before the centers were toast. Replaced with Dunlop Mutants. Best the on the market. My only gripe is that they didn't come out with the LED setup that I already had on my 2020 Ninja. Why did they wait till 2022? Wtf?
