Dirt Bike Magazine tests the new 2021 KTM 450XC-F in the desert. Our 2021 KTM 450XC-F test bike arrived in the nick of time for the rescheduled NGPC series next week in Idaho. This is the perfect bike for that series, which was formerly known as the District 37 Big 6 GP series. The KTM 450XC-F has a long history of success there with riders like Gary Sutherlin and Eric Yorba. I’ll be taking the bike up there for a race test, and sharing it with Paul Krause, who will ride it in a different class. Neither of us should be too surprised by the 2021 model. The changes are minimal. It remains a very close blood relative to the KTM 450SX-F motocross bike. The things that set it apart are the 18-inch rear wheel, the kickstand, softer suspension settings, handguards, Dunlop AT81 tires and mapping. We don’t quite understand why the price is quite a bit heftier than the 450SX-F-$10,799 versus $10,199.There are two things worth knowing about the 2021 model. The first is that the suspension has very significant changes. The WP XACT AER 48 air fork has new piston design and features a mid valve (for lack of a better description). The other factor is the coming of KTM’s smartphone app. This still isn’t available in the U.S., but I have seen a demo of a beta version and it’s very impressive. There are a few differences between it and the Yamaha Power Tuner. First, it’s Bluetooth, not Wifi. I don’t know if that will be better, or not, but I have chronic problems hooking up my Android phone to the Yamaha app. An even bigger difference is the user friendly aspect. The KTM version isn’t a remapping tool with differnent fields for advance and fuel mixture. It concentrates more on tuning the power delivery for loamy and hard-pack conditions. It turns out that very few people can get the desired results by changing the values in the 48 different fields required to make a change on the Power Tuner. Beyond that’ there are more electronic aids coming next year on the KTM app that will be very impressive if they pan out. THe KTM guys aren’t ready to talk about those yet.The fork is the other really important upgrade for the 2021 KTM 450SX-F. If you read my first impression of the 450SX-F motocross bike you already know that I’m very impressed with in improvement here. For off-road use, the improvement in compliance is even more welcome. I’m looking forward to riding the bike at the Idaho round of the NGPC series and I’ll have more to report in the December print edition of Dirt Bike.

The best mod you can make is adding 6th gear from a 500. All said and done it cost about $400 and a couple of nights in the garage. I did it to mine and absolutely love it! I had to go up two teeth on the rear to get it to rev out in 6th, but that actually helps on starts and in the technical stuff.

After owning mx bikes exclusively and racing GPS and mx i bought one these xcf models few years ago and it was best bike I ever owned....it just does everything so well.. I was shocked how good it was right out of box and its light

I have a '17 xcf. I ride in tight single track in N.Y. my buddies think I'm nuts but it rides excellent everywhere. Single track, open powerlines, fire roads, and especially on the ice.

same here in South Africa you only get the XC-W then a handful of 300XC's make it in but no 250XC bikes which is all I want

Correction dirt bike magazine: You cannot get a 450 xcf-w anymore in North America. 2, people want the xcf models as they aren’t choked to death with epa mapping.

I had a 17 XCF 450. Never had any down low motor, throttle, power issues. The dint think the bike ever stalled. Road it up high in single track and fast in the desert. Kept up fine with all the smaller bikes on technical single track...even beat some of them. These aren’t iour dads 450’s. With the 1 map and a Rekluse you can go anywhere a two stoke or 350 can. And you don’t need the Rekluse. It just makes it so easy.

Hello, I am looking at buying a 300 two stroke or a 350 or 450 four stroke. I do a lot of slow to moderately paced single track riding but love to open it up in the more open trails. So anyway I have a chance to purchase a 2017 husqvarna fx450 in my area for around 5k. What do you think about the bike? I'm wondering if it will be too twitchy in the tighter stuff. I had a 16 yz450 I bought that I just rode at the dunes and periodically the trails. It was a lot to hold on to all day in the woods but It was obviously a motorcross bike by yamaha. It had a pipe and other than that it was stock. Long story short this 450 is very appealing and it is about the only local option at this time. I just want to make sure I don't make the wrong choice. Did you ever have any issues with overheating? I've heard there can be some issues with the husky. Sorry for such a long comment. Don't worry about responding if you don't want too. Thank you.

@@gunnar9840 I just saw your reply. Sorry! I only had the 450 XCF overheat once...and that was because we had a group of 10-12 riders that were riding like slugs up a very long mountain single track climb. I bought a 20 FX 450 and put fans on it. Starting in about 17 the 450's became so much easier to ride at slow speeds. The #1 throttle map on my 17 and 20 450 is roll on smooth power that feels like a 350. I personally want speed and power when the trail is not so technical and my friends love their 2 strokes but they are not as fun on faster terrain. The 350's are fun but they don't have the booming power that I want sometimes so that to me is all you lose between the two. Lots of friends have 350's and they can climb anything they it do. The 450's just are not what they used to be. With advances in engine design and throttle mapping you can ride one all day. I've done 4-8 hour trail rides on mine. What did you end up buying?

Cool video. I kinda forget that the Austrians even make a 450. All my buddies that ride KTMs keep telling me that I don’t “need” a 450 (or course they all ride 350s).

I have the 2020 version and hate a lot about it. 1st gear too tall for tight technical riding and 5th gear is too slow. Also, i have to carry a battery jumper box because ktm only put a small 35watt stator that will not run lights and will leave you stranded if you run a trail tech ktm fan. No kickstarter either. I race desert and have had several ktms

Ktm really need to put a 6 speed trans with low 1st gear and fast 6th gear on these bikes. Then it would be the ultimate all rounder bike and

Hey Nathan, I have a 19 450xcf too and they have the sxf gearbox, tall 1st gear and slow 5th gear, apparently you can put a 6th gear in them tho, big job!

Not a single tree within 100 miles. I would like to see you race that in a hare scramble here where you can't see 20 feet in front of you and your bars don't fit through the trees. You never see a 450 here.
