This may help show how many Outback buyers are actually concerned about the “gutless” engine: March 2021…this month’s runaway success was the Subaru Outback. The Outback recorded its best sales result in 25 years and a prodigious 190 per cent increase over this time last year, shifting 1,341 units. Not only did the Outback outperform against its own benchmark, it also took top honours in the large SUV class ahead of the Kia Sorento.

I like its look at first sight while less expecting improvements on safety-related features. The primary design remains the same for a decade.

Excellent sir ! USA here. Is the opposite of "down under", "up over"? Sorry if "down under" is frowned on there. I have 16 Outback middle of the road model and Mrs. has 21 Outback top line Touring. I really smiled when you said the standard motor is "adequate", exactly how I’ve described it for some years. Not a curb-crawler, nor is it sprite/fun. Gets the job done. Fast merging, just leave it in manual mode and make boxer scream 5000 rpm. I test drove Touring XT turbo. It is geared for economy and a wee unimpressive at first, then really nice once boosting and rpms up. The new Wilderness model here comes with somewhat lower gear ratio with turbo, and almost an inch greater clearance (~21mm). I suspect it would feel much more quick turbo fun, but requires the most petrol. Like 26 mpg’s max (Siri says converts to 9 liters/100 km). The 21 has such better (lighter, easier) power steering, the brakes too. It is much quieter inside, especially when tromped on. The Napa leather is nice and looks great. Fan vented seats and heated steering wheel. This is north country and I instantly loved the heated wheel. 21 Touring FINALLY comes off as a refined Subaru, not just aimed at excellent traction and safety. Eyesight on both is critically wonderful, like taking 20 years off aging body. The face recognition I’m not sure on, but is retraining me to keep eyes ahead more, less gawking, could save an accident. Big tablet, I don’t drive Mrs. car often, not used to it. For deep level screen use, I pull over and stop. I sure also like the new generation much more, just being quieter inside "sells" it. I shall upgrade mine in several years. I vacillate between lux Touring, possibly turbo, or extra ground clearance, quicker, a little thirstier, more masculine looking Wilderness. I suppose which one smooths the biggest bumps the best shall win. Touring has Harmon Kardon stereo upgrade, that may push me over edge to the lux model, indeed. Thanks again for your additional info !! I hope Australia gets option of turbo soon. City traffic, pulling something, high altitude, rough off roading, would be good.

4:01 RHS DRL not working. 4:56 LHS DRL not working. 5:10 RHS DRL not working. 6:52 - 6:54 RHS DRL not working, then works while LHS DRL stops working. So weird. It's either camera angles catching the refracted light from the DRL or there's some wacky electronic fails happening....

That's the Penrith Subaru demo Outback (lowest variant). Guess it makes sense that it became the Press car too. Considering that it's the "standard" model, it now comes with a heck of a lot of kit by default. I particularly like that LED headlights and Steering Responsive Headlights are now standard - no more halogens! This is the only variant that has a standard non-powered tailgate too, however since all of them are keyless start, it means you can set a tailgate access PIN across all variants to be able to get into the car without your key fob (great for pets or kids who have been accidentally locked in the car and save you breaking a window). This version of the Outback also has the stop/start engine action at the lights, and you can temporarily disable it (turns back on next start), but in the Sports and Touring variants, you can disable the stop/start action in the car preferences completely. The new EyeSight 4.0 features are really good too - a step up from the previous version. The car detects and reads speed road signs perfectly and reflects that in the combination meter the instant you pass the sign. The lane centering is also a step above the previous steering assist of the Gen5, though it really works best on roads with painted lines.

Another great review Dan - I have always been a fan of Wheels Mag, and I hope to see the KZfaq channel really gain some traction with this quality content. Subaru will have to have a look at the right headlight’s drl on this car, as it appears to be not working at times throughout this video. Other then that, it seems like a pretty good thing.

2:59 It should have built in Navigation. A cell phone should be ready as a full time phone. Does a phone lose nav connection while on the phone? The way I would use navigation is for cross country trips which would eat up phone data. The phone needs to be connected recharging full time, too.

I have found a universal shortcoming in all the reviews I have read. Why is it, that road tests never look at night driving? I want to know how effective the lights are, and so will plenty of others who live in rural areas. This becomes even more obvious with the headlights going 'round corners'. Would have been nice to see just how this works in real life. We had an Outback years ago and it needed driving lights. Obviously now driving lights are not an option. So, I won't be finding out how good these lights are until I own one and drive it at night.

any news regarding the stop delivery of the outback? probably because of software issue? Please advise.
@pinkpetunia1
@pinkpetunia1 3 жыл бұрын
I ordered a new Outback 2021 (Sports) on 26 Feb. Took delivery of it on 12 March. Was advised by Subaru on 1 April it was being recalled. I took the vehicle in for its first service and to get the pre collision brake management system (reason for the recall) fixed on 15 April. They couldn’t fix the problem because ‘apparently’ the software provided by Subaru Australia to fix the pcbms crashed their entire system. The car has had niggly problems since the day I took delivery of it. I wouldn’t buy this vehicle if I were you...too many things going wrong with it and the dealership can’t seem to fix any of them. One feature that only works intermittently is the ‘auto stop start’ feature. Did you know that apparently it only works when pre existing conditions are met, ie when the battery isn’t cold and is at (something like) 80% charge??? (Or something like that.) I wasn’t aware of that and I told the dealership so. I was met with this response: “well, it’s in the manual”. I did not have access to the ownership manuals before I purchased the car. Also, did you know there are FOUR owner manuals for this vehicle. One is 599 pages long; and another is 200 pages long. So, if you are shopping around for this car, and the sales rep tells you about features and functionality, you will need to ask if that feature/function works only if pre existing conditions are met. You need to really do your research and ask a million questions if you’re serious about purchasing this vehicle.

@@pinkpetunia1 That is one function nobody needs, auto start stop should be turned off all the time, and it is commonly known the start stop only works under certain conditions, that is in every car like that. Thats not even a problem, so your only problem is something that is not a problem?

Anyone that actually uses their roof racks would see these Subaru folding racks are a joke. Every single other SUV and 99% of cars allow after market racks , so the user can fit what suits them. These racks are good for nothing and probably a good reason why you don’t ever see the current gen outback’s going anywhere...

I agree totally i kayak and cycle so i am always swapping accessories on the roof bars which is convenient when you have t slots, the roofracks on the outback would be a deal breaker for me if i was considering a new car, it's a shame because i like the lower roof height and the fact that you can get the outback in a turbo which you can't get anymore in the forrester
