I drive an original model swift sport and actually could not care less that the plastics inside feel a bit scratchy and cheap, would far rather the money got spent on excellent engineering and reliability, love the basic raw and honest quality, 200k on the clock of mine and barely anything gone wrong with it, will probably replace with one of these when it does finally need replacing

This the fairest review I have read from UK commentators who seem to have a bias against Japanese cars. It costs a lot less here in NZ. I bought a new 2019 ,admittedly without the upgraded battery ,for less than £15000. Interior is adequate but driving and reliability are great. I have owned Japanese cars for 40 years, various makes, and in all that time have had to replace one suspension bush. Thank you Matt for a great review of a real fun car.

Hi Matt, being the owner of a non hybrid sport I found your review very interesting. Mine has done just over 7000 miles now and is loosening up nicely. I suspect that the quoted power/performance figures by Suzuki are on the modest side and my car fells quicker than quoted and I suspect with some miles on it the hybrid will be the same, I use Shell V Power and get an average of 49 mpg. I agree with all you say about the car's interior. Hard plastics don't bother me one jot, they are strong and easy to keep looking nice. Being a Suzuki it's been 100% reliable, just like my last Suzuki. Like a few others I suspect I was a bit "concerned" with the power drop, but talking to others you simply doesn't notice it. Thanks for a great review 🎄🎄🎄

There are aspects of this car that reminds me of my 1960s MG1100. The transmission whines at low speeds in 3rd and 4th. You can hear all the wheel bearings. These are not bad things. It most reminds me of a R56 Mini and it’s as efficient as a 2011-2014 Cooper SD. The flashing light is the Anti weaving system which gets confused on narrow lanes. The first thing I switched off, and it stays off. The Lane departure is a separate button apron the steering wheel which I use on dual carriageways. I have the full fat version, a second quicker to 60 with only 5Nm less torque. They can be picked up from £10k up. You still get stop start and easily over 50mpg (if driven sensibly).
@Jasontvnd9
@Jasontvnd9 2 жыл бұрын
The real value is in the K14C version like you have , Easily mapped to 170hp and can be picked up in the cheap......well they used to be now a low mileage 2018 is 15k nearly. Anyways point is it's good value and far more of a hot hatch than the K14D mild hybrid version tested here.

My daughter always had a soft spot for the Swift and it's nice to see a smaller manufacturer putting together such a good product. Typical of today's environment to mandate a system that pulls the wheel out of your hands though, ridiculous!
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
I am a Suzuki fan, but the numbers at 2:30 didnt seem right. 235Nm extra from a small mild hybrid system would be incredible. Thats quite a lot of power at the quoted rpm. Checked the specs and its 235Nm max from the ICE engine, with 53Nm (presumably below 2000rpm) and 10kw boost from the hybrid system. Anyway, it looks like it is a good car. Cant usually go wrong with a Suzuki.
@cocosloan3748
@cocosloan3748 2 жыл бұрын
Though el motors have amazing torque - I agree 235Nm is too much. Belt would snap . But 100Nm is easily achievable . My 2021 Hybrid non Sport gives extra 50Nm for 4-5sec any time i step on the acc pedal .
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
@@cocosloan3748 Sure, but its not the torque that accelerates a car, its the power. Unfortunately, this hasnt got that much extra of that, and yours is even less. Now it can still be a good car of course, but the hybrid system is a marginal benefit, almost too small to be even measured in the case of your car. If I remember correctly from the other review it was something like 1.5-2hp in the normal version? Anyway, I am sure its a nice car, would happily own one myself.
@gasparinizuzzurro6306
@gasparinizuzzurro6306 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoldenCroc None, It's the torque. As said by physics F=m * a; so acceleration is a=f/m now, the force f is f = torque/distance . So the acceleration is a = (torque/distance) /m. In other terms, the more torque the more acceleration. What does car accelerate is the torque. without no torque no acceleration.
@GoldenCroc
@GoldenCroc 2 жыл бұрын
@@gasparinizuzzurro6306You got it backwards I afraid, its the power the accelerates a car, as I said earlier. It is quite impossible for a car (or any object) to accelerate without being a part of an "energy conversion", which is commonly called "power", and measured in horsepower or watt. It is, on the other hand, quite possible for a car to give all the torque in the world without moving an inch. The "torque" is just a factor in it in this case, and gives no information about acceleration on its own as an isolated number like "235 Nm" for example. Power, on the other hand, does. Common misconception though, this "torque" malarkey, so dont feel bad. Cheers.
@gasparinizuzzurro6306
@gasparinizuzzurro6306 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoldenCroc Maybe in your universe, i think. Every Physics Professor didn't agree with you ;-) the reason of lower speed is that, at high RPMs the engine starts to loose torque (this is true for ALL engines of course) while the air resistance increase with the square of the speed. So the old engine had more torque available at, for example 5500 RPMs and can reach rougly reach 6mph more than the new before the air resistance raise to a level that will not allow further speed increase. Instead it's the power that by itself means nothing as being expressed as the product of torque multiplied by speed (in terms of RPMs). And effectively one thing to show more power is to increase RPMs while keeping the torque costant. Do not feel bad but i'm thinking you need to study a bit of kinematics and physics

Damn good drivability and excellent mileage cant make it spend more than 6l/100km on a straight road (only if you push it uphill and rev it pass 5000RPM - then it gets to 9l/100km)😂

Too bad we don't see nice medium hatches (as opposed to cold or hot) in the US and Suzuki is gone completely. We are left with a precious few very pricey hot hatches that aren't particularly small. I suppose this Swift is a distant relation to our long-gone Geo Metro / Suzuki Swift which were both surprisingly good little cars. I'd take this Suzuki over a Tesla Model S Plaid or Cybertruck that won't even fit in an ordinary garage any day.

If Suzuki had kept the price at sub £20k I think they would of had a big hit on their hands. I'm sure I read originally the price was even more but after feedback from the motoring press initial discounts were made and £20,500 seems to be the new price point. Understand the reasoning behind the price. Hybrid plus my understanding was that there was just the one fully specced model. Unlike say a Fiesta ST. Not sure if it's still the case with the Suzuki. I've got a previous gen version. I love it! But it's not perfect. Its not very torquey - you have to thrash it to get any performance (not a nice noise) - its NOT a quick car! Diesel Passats will walk away from you at the lights. Hopefully, the Hybrid system on this version will give you that mid range shove the old version lacks. I always find the gear ratios silly - its got 6, but 1st and 2nd are so low that you hardly need them unless crawling - 3rd does fine if you are going more than 15mph! If only they'd raise the ratios slightly. Journos complain about cheap plastics on Suzukis, but I can't see what they are complaining about - they look classy to me! They say it hasn't got a 'soft touch' dash - well, I don't touch my dash very often! And the great thing about Suzukis is - I've had two Swifts now, and absolutely nothing has gone wrong with them - had to replace things that wear out like batteries and brake disks, but that's it!

The hybrid is 2 seconds slower to 100kmph and also heavier / more expensive. I'll be buying the non hybrid. 🔥Great car and good review. Points off the car for no console, but i can buy an after market one.

this is what new cars cost, and as most buy on PCP the monthly cost is pretty low, lower than buying a used car per month

@@furiousdriving Yeh but in reality you never really own anything .Its been shown buying on PCP can work out more expensive , its like renting a house{works out more expensive in the end } you are renting for ever and a day. Who coughs up the final fee after 2/3 years of paying .No one you just start again .Its all down to how much you are prepared to pay on a car

And hard to keep in good condition if you're leasing or PCP. Give me a nice silver alloy any day.

Ironically, I think the diamond cut finish against a painted background is meant to look expensive! Doesn't seem to be working on you, lol. The wheels are usually designed so the wheel can be offered in both a standard painted silver finish as well as the machined finish against black or dark grey. So it should be possible to track down the silver version (or just refinish them yourself).

@@mattm6720 Apparently you can get a reasonable result by sanding out the kerb rash on the machined bit, polishing and then clear coating. Not a perfect match to the original machining marks, but looks good enough. Some mobile wheel refurbishers are now doing it this way (the alternative is obviously to repaint the whole wheel in the background colour and then put it back on a lathe which is programmed with the wheel profile to recut the original finish).
