The new 2021 Tesla Model S is a refresh of an existing design that's been around since 2010. For this new model, the company has made some incremental improvements to the exterior design as well as the interior, and the big news is the unique steering wheel (aka Yoke). Tesla's been emulated by many companies in the past, will the Yoke also be adopted in other cars? Eric Gallina and Sam Livingstone discuss the merits of the new car and its possible impact on the car design industry.

It's more of a message, we're moving towards autonomy and the steering wheel will have to be redesigned to remove the clutter.

My ms with yoke should arrive in a few weeks and I’m excited to use it. Due to air bags, recommended hand position is 9&3 and yoke achieves this. Full right to full left stops is no more than 90 degrees from center. Let’s do a test drive before condemning the upgrade.

The 10 & 2 o’clock grip went by the wayside with airbags so your arms aren’t thrown into you face in a crash. The steering wheel was designed as a wheel because the cars back then had mechanical steering and needed a large radius wheel for the mechanical advantage. Times have changed and with the advent of electronic control gains there is a reason they went away from a wheel in big ships and fighter jets and some of the latest airliners.

with airbags, you should not use the 10 and 2 positions on steering wheel.

I hope they sell the Model S with the yoke or steering wheel. The majority of people will pick the steering wheel. I'm use to a yoke flying a Cessna, but flying an F-16 is a whole different thing. You have to get use to flying a jet with the stick on the right console instead of in-between your legs. Now F-22 and F-35 has the stick on the right console. That was a good idea because everything you need to see is right yesin front of you. Now if the car has a HUD that's even better for both yoke and steering wheel.

Surprised to not hear any discussion about the Ux implications. Most steering wheels have around 3x revolutions of maximum lock. This seems to necessitate no more than 1x to avoid having to shift your grip? Will software then be needed to adjust its sensitively according to speed/situation and how reliable is that? Is it even legal in most countries?
