Compared with most pickup trucks, the 2021 Tundra looks and feels like a classic.

Pickup trucks these days feel a lot like luxury cars. The 2021 Toyota Tundra still feels like a truck. With a thirsty V8 and plenty of capability--but limited refinement--is this the time to buy a Tundra, or are shoppers better suited waiting for a 2022 redesign?

I have been driving my 2020 TRD Crew for about a year now. I absolutely love it. But it's still big I took the back head rests off and have extended mirrors for better visibility. Couldn't even imagine driving it without the sensors and back up camera! And parking? lol But it's an awesome truck. Very fun to drive and the sound and feel of the V8 is the cherry on top.

I love how old the Tundra platform is and how everything works. It's simple with limited tech, so nothing breaks like what happens with the domestic trucks. I've had a 2007 CM SR5, a 2010 CM Limited, a 2017 CM TRD Pro and now my current 2019 CM TRD Pro. My current truck will be with me for a long time. I can't imagine having a truck without a V8. Over the years I have never complained about gas mileage or anything else about the Tundra at all. It will be sad to see the big 5.7L V8 go away. Every Toyota, whether built in the US, Japan or anywhere else around the globe are all "Over Engineered" and built to last. For those of us who currently own a Tundra with the V8, please hold on to them. With Tundra's having the best resale value in the 1/2 ton market, once the new Tundra becomes available, the V8's will do even better. Look at what's happening with the current Land Cruiser 200 series with the 5.7L V8 in the US. With the US not getting the new LC 300 Series going forward, the current LC 200 Series is selling like hot cakes. The same thing is happening with LC sales every where else around the globe. Buyers in other markets get the V8 Turbo Diesel, which the new 300 Series will not have.

I like your premise blueoval, but our 2004 sequoia has 380000 miles on it. I’m on my third tundra driving rock roads and scour the bottom off them. My Ford F-350 was losing brake lines, calipers locking up, and charcoal filter box clogged 2 times in 3 years with less miles than my tundra was getting at the same time. My 96 chevy dually is in better shape now at 188000 miles than my 2012 ford was when I kicked that rust bucket down the road.

I wouldn't buy a Tundra from 2019 on with regards to the current generation. 2018 is the last year I would buy one and would probably be the best example and most reliable of that generation. My reason is because they removed the transmission cooler from the truck starting the 2019 year. People are reporting Transmission temps sometimes 20 degrees higher and the fluid looks pretty rough in some of the fluid changes that have occurred at around 60k miles (just search for videos on it in KZfaq). I have a 2014 with 140k miles on it and it runs like it was brand new. I love it! No problems at all. Take care of it and it will serve you a long time.

Best truck you can buy if looking for a long term vehicle. Everyone is saying the V8 is gone on the 2022 Tundra I still think there’s a “decent” chance they will make the 5.0 V8 they use in some Lexus models an option. A lot of truck buyers still insist on a V8 and Toyota still wants to sell trucks.

@Tyler many times a Diesel engine upgrade is around 5k and the oil changes are usually double the cost and overall more expensive to maintain so that sort of negates the fuel saving to a good degree.
@kross1261
@kross1261 3 жыл бұрын
@Tyler the 2.7 ecoboost does well on mileage but 5.0 V8 and 3.5 ecoboost do not much get much better mileage from what I’ve seen. Around 2 mpg better in real world conditions. And F-150’s reliability isn’t up there with the Tundras especially when you want to put 200 k miles or more on your truck. And as far as towing you max out the so called towing ratings on most of these 1/2 tons anymore it’s almost a scary experience. Power is fine controlling the load? That’s another story. If you’re pulling 8-10k pounds you should be using a 3/4 ton imo.
@kross1261
@kross1261 3 жыл бұрын
@Tyler the biggest difference between the two is overall reliability. If you’re going to trade up every 3 years or so I’d probably own a F150 myself if they were more reasonably priced but anymore I keep a truck 10-15 years and say 300k miles. A Hunting buddy of mine is a big Ford guy. Asked him how he liked his newest F150 and why he got rid of his last one. Said “he really likes the truck but he’s learned from experience they’re not a good long term tuck.”
@kross1261
@kross1261 3 жыл бұрын
@Tyler sorry that’s not true. Here’s just a few examples, consumer reports rates the reliability of the Tundra much higher than the F150 every year. Find a true 1 million mile (1/2 ton) F150? Tundra now has 3. Go to almost any reliability study on trucks and pretty sure you’ll never find the F150 rated more reliable. Here’s one good example we have 2 independent mechanics in my home town. Both drive Tundras. I’ve asked them why? “Built better and last longer”. Also I’ve experienced in my own life of buying multiple new trucks both domestics and Toyota from both my personal truck and my business.

Toyota Tundras just work. If you're interested in impressing your friends with fancy gizmos that break and trading your car in for the new model every year, the Tundra isn't for you. If you tend to keep things that work for a long time and value reliability and simplicity, you've found what you're looking for.

Wondering if Toyota is gonna put a V8 hydrogen engine in there at some point and go with a manual 5 or 6 speed tranny. Be friggin sick to see and I'd pick one up. Gonna have to be tough though considering if there's something to break, with me whipping around and down the trails in the middle of no where It's gotta be milsurp tough.

If history is prologue then Toyota should put the OBDII plug right the dash next to the radio because you are going to need it. Toyota hid and ignored an expensive fuel pump issue for 10 years now with over 3.2 million recalls that do not cover all vehicles.

Just got a 2020 double cab sr5 5.7 and it handles 10klbs loaded 24 ft equipment trailer no problem. I think Toyota low balled towing #s because of hitch rating but the truck can handle more. I know multiple people who tow heavy and have well over 200k miles on these trucks and they are still going without end in sight also they have been towing since day 1. I ran from ford because of turbos, Chevy because of clyinder deactivation and trans issues, ram because I’ve already owned one and the engine was torn down twice by 200k miles. Only truck comparable is my other truck a 99 f350 7.3 diesel and well, that thing is a true dinosaur. Probably the most 2 reliable trucks on the planet.

Loved your review on the Toyota Tundra. Very insightful. I actually just bought a 2021 Toyota Tundra SR5 Package Double Cab. I love the way it drives to me its pretty maneuverable. Wish the MPG was a little higher but its a truck, what would you expect? I wish this model had a sun roof. I was going to buy the TRD Crew Max but I wanted a 6 1/2 foot bed. I would've loved to have a crew max with a 6 1/2 foot bad if it was available. Would've liked to see this model although not a TRD to have 20 inch black gloss wheels and deeper tread tires. I will be modifying this truck soon. Getting 22 inch wheels with new tires and and probably adding a leveling kit to raise it a few inches not going crazy for a 6 inch lift. Don't want it too high in which it might affect performance and drivability over time. But I'll have to do some research and think about it.

Had a 2017 SR5/4X4 with several upgrades. I loved several of the aspects of this vehicle, but it lacked in so many ways that I let it go. Everyone wants to preach reliability, but maintaining my vehicles has kept me from having mechanical issues with everything I've owned. My old Tundra has been outshined from every aspect. I love our other Toyotas, but the truck just didn't make the cut.

Im a die hard toyota person. I plan to buy a truck at the end of next year. Keep the 21 rav4 in the household. I keep looking at things like the new tundra v6 turbo, new tacoma turbo, 3rd gen tacoma. I have looked at chevys 1500 3.0L duramax and 5.3...the ossue with chevy is the reliability of both engines. Most cases leading to months at the shop. Large bills to foot. The new tundra im on the fence about with electric waste gates and quality control issues in Texas lately. Idk enough on the new turbo tacoma. Im at a point of saying idc about mpg, i want a 30 year living truck so im not spending a month at the shop or time in my garage all the time. To me, im at a point of... why save mpg when you will spend more on fixing it all the time. Im leaning more and more to a 3rd gen tacoma or 2nd gen tundra. I know the 3rd gen tacoma has seen 200k and 300k already. We all know the 5.7 tundra has been the million miles motor. Whatever truck i buy, i plan to keep until death do us part. I want to focus on savings for retirement. Not buying a new vehicle every so many years, buying major parts or having shop bills.

I just got my dad a '21 Tundra SR 4x4 double cab in Barcelona Red. Price was just under $39k, $2k off MSRP. Tried looking for lightly used but they are literally selling for more money than brand new MSRP. Dad's planning on driving the truck for the next 20 years. IMO the current design is far more desirable for long-term ownership than the redesign.

This is an old video. But, it reminds me why I’ll be buying a 2021 Tundra when I replace my 2012. I don’t want a V6. The new turbochargers have problems and the info-tainment system is a a mess. So, yeah, I’ll buying a 2021 model.

I just drove a 21' TRD Pro today that's for sale for a great price. I wanted to love it, but I guess I love tech and bells and whistles more than reliability. It was so boring and outdated that I just couldn't do it. Maybe I'll get over it.

I have a 2021 1794 in Mesquite metallic....absolutely gorgeous! Bought it because it is the last V8 year for the Tundra. This engine will outlast the high Rev turbo V6's by decades and I challenge anyone with a turbo to compare milage. They might get 1+ MPG over the V8 in real world driving. Toyota screwed the pooch by giving up the 5.7.
