#CoupleCarReviews
This is a Motormouth couple car review of the first full electric vehicle from Volvo, the XC40 Recharge. The XC40 Recharge electric car is the same as the conventional gasoline version, the only difference is a smooth grille, no tailpipe and subtle badging. The XC40 electric car has Two Motors and a lithium-ion battery with a 150 kW motor in line with both the front and rear axles. The XC40 Recharge has a 78 kWh battery (kilowatt hours) and is capable of a top speed 180km/h. The 0-100km/h time is just 4.9 seconds.The XC40 electric Volvo has 402 Horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque and It gets an EPA 335km of electric range. The Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric utility has the exact same interior space and comfort as the gasoline version but under the hood is a hidden, small front cargo area with a spare tire kit, the regular spare tire has been removed. Main Competitor is the Tesla Model Y long range AWD with 525km of electric range, 0-100 in 5 seconds and comes in at almost $70,000. There is a rear wheel drive standard range available for $56,290 with 393km of EV range and goes 0-100 in 5.6 seconds. The German Alternative is the Volkswagen ID.4 with 400km of EV range, it goes 0-100 in 5.8 seconds and will be available in Canada this summer. Starting at $39,995 US, Canadian pricing has not been announced. The Newest Competitor is the Ford Mustang Mach-E with up to 482 km of range and has a starting price of $50,495
Japanese Alternative is the Nissan Ariya AWD with up to 482km of EV range. Pricing has not been announced yet but it is expected to go on sale the later part of this year.

My wife loves our 18 month old Volvo XC-40 T5 R-Design. Looking forward to drive the Recharge when it gets to the USA. One thing we love about our XC40 is that it fits a lot of storage space into 174 inches of length. It's a looker, and we still get people walking up admiring it. I have back problems, and I was surprised that I don't like the Volvo seats all that much. I'm way more comfy in my 11 year old Ford Ranger. Really looking forward to your test of the VW ID4, which we're cross-shopping. European reviewers seem to love the ID4.

Hi Zack! One year later Jerome, here. :) I've heard there's been a major software update on the XC40, which made the car's energy management a lot better. From what i've heard, it charges a lot quicker than before and you don't have that dramatic drop of autonomy during the winter. I also heard there's now a heat pump on the base model in this car, just like the C40. Got any indication on that matter?

Can’t speak to your market, but in Norway the P8 starts at the same price as the ICE R-design trim level, which is the trim level the P8 is based on, so comparing apples to apples it’s actually fairly priced. There are rumours that Volvo will develop a ‘downgraded’ version with single engine based on the lowest trim level at a later stage, which will probably be more competitive on price.

Agree with this, if i could directly trade our Tesla 3 LR for this in a year, it would be a no brainer for our family of four including ski trips. As it is, we'll likely go with the ID4. I like this a lot though, except for the range.

Sadly I live in 'horse and buggy' Australia and all we can get is a hybrid fwd XC40. I believe the comfort pack of heated steering wheel is available, but what we really need is a cooled steering wheel. Even in our cool Melbourne Victoria our summers are mid to high 30 degrees C. Cold batteries is never a problem except for old batteries in ICE cars.

It cold gates, meaning you dont get to utilise the 150kW charging speed at winter, in extreme cold temperatures. Hey Zack, Andrea..great video! To answer handling in snow & charge loss...as of now I think the XC40 will handle better in snowy conditions than a Tesla..Tesla’s AWD is good but it’s slight rear biased for fun driving & they don’t have a dedicated snow mode...but, knowing Tesla I guess it can always come in a future update...as for charge loss you can expect the range to lower by approx 20-25%..obviously this depends on a lot of factors..Tesla has battery heating & conditionings sorted..Volvo is still working on it as per a podcast I listened yesterday featuring their company CTO... Great review as always, guys! So I'm a bit confused as to why Volvo has a spinoff brand dedicated to performance EVs, Polestar, but also is producing their own performance EVs. Like, I know you were mentioning the packaging of the Kia Sorrento as being odd because the Kia Telluride exists a few episodes ago, Zack, and I can't help but feel the same way about Polestar and its relationship to Volvo with the main differentiator being what if the very same powertrains are being used as they are in this application and the Polestar 2. Is Polestar just going to be a styling exercise or just another twin brand a la Hyundai/Kia? It just seems odd.
@andreaspencer9813
@andreaspencer9813 3 жыл бұрын
I guess you can look at it that way, Kia/Hyundai but I believe Volvo is appealing to two different buyers. The Polestar is supposed to have a more dynamic and sporty drive, a different experience where the XC40 Recharge has more of a comfortable drive with some driving dynamics as well, but not like the Polestar. Maybe Volvo is looking for a different car enthusiast with the Polestar, someone who wants a sportier look and vibe. I haven't driven the Polestar 2 yet, but I look forward to checking out some of the differences between the two.
@djcoronel
@djcoronel 3 жыл бұрын
@@andreaspencer9813 ah, I see. Thanks for the detailed opinion. It will be interesting to see how Polestar moves forward with their models given that they are a bit pricey and their performance and range aren't really on par yet with the offerings from Porsche, Audi and Tesla. I’m not convinced yet for long range travel as I already have an issue with people that run into the store while leaving their vehicle at the pump and that is less than 5 mins. Imagine waiting for someone to finish their breakfast at Denny’s before accessing a charging station.

We have the luxury of have a 21 XC40 T5 AWD and then a Recharge EV as well. Both are nice cars. The EV is a bit buggy still becasue Volvo went with an unproven Google OS to run the car. The T5 is rock solid, and very nimble, but does not feel as refined as the EV mostly do to the weight makes the Recharge more planted and smooth other than on very bumpy roads. Also the smooth linear quiet acceleration makes it feel so luxurious. If you are accepting of gen 1 quirks and bugs the Recharge is a great vehicle. While not as efficient as many of its competitors if you drive it normal it is very good with range.

Hello guys. Fine job as always! Speaking about electric cars in general, is there a good reason for somebody not wanting for others to know he or she is driving an electric or "eco" vehicle? Personally, I think not showing it enough is a bad marketing move. What do you think? Cheers!

Hi Andrea and Zack, so small update. Went to Volvo and test drove it. Seriously considering it. But the heat pump is not available. Due to covid they told me there are none available and Volvo has stopped (per the salesperson) offering it. Still nice car. Cross shopping it is to the Ford and Y. You’re right the Y is louder on highway. Ford has no hitch option. So Volvo may be the way to go. Not sure. Will decide in a week.

Here in the UK, the price of fuel is so high that over a 3-5 year period you could save that differential and more besides, depending on how many miles you do of course. There also calls to have a zero rate vat (Sales tax) on the purchase of a pure EV. So for this car the expected sticker price is just shy of £60K GBP - that's $107,000 Canadian. If we can save 20% VAT then we're looking at £48k. That is still twice the price of a Petrol version. I agree though, they are all priced too high. There is a Government grant giving buyers about £3k towards the cost, but it does not apply if the car is more than £40k so we're stuck with the Nissan Leaf or Kia e-Nero - anything desirable is just unattainable.

This and the Polestar 2 are really beautiful. The designs are gorgeous. They are quick but they are relatively expensive. Unfortunately I think the range of the Polestar and the Recharge aren't even close to the competition. Model Y, Mach E, VW ID 4, Ariya and the Ioniq 5. For me, the VW ID4 or Ioniq 5 are the clear winners this year.

The 2022 bolt euv, upcoming 2023 fisker ocean, 2022 Nissan ariya, 2021 Volvo xc40 recharge, polestar 2, and the Kia cv on the same e-gmp ev platform as the ioniq 5. Will all be in the mix to by later this year or sometime next year. Nio is said to be contemplating a us expansion, with the es6, ec6 and larger es8 all in their lineup. They could ad some more competition as well. The next few year's will be interesting to watch. 🤔

@@4literv6 totally agree. Rivian as well. I just found out Genesis will come out with an EV this year based on the IONIQ 5. Hyundai is really bringing some great products. I put my name down for a Ioniq 5 as 800v charging is going to be awesome.
@4literv6
@4literv6 3 жыл бұрын
@@kevinn1158 I think you mean to say the e-gmp global ev platform? I wouldn't compare the rivian r1s to any of these either. As imo it's priced much to high and is meant to compete more with say land rover or model x type buyer's. The lucid gravity SUV project coming in 2023 or so will also compete in that upper end SUV segment. Against the Cadillac lyriq and likely hummer ev. Plus if it makes it here to the us, the nio es8. 🤔 Yes 800v architecture is fascinating, but it's not what most dcfc are built to use right now. Plus I just read in another official korean release over on the electrek blog. That the ioniq 5 is actually only rated to take 220kwhs max charge rate with the larger pack at release. So maybe 350kwhs is just a goal for a future ota update? Or even for later model's? I wonder how long before someone has a true competitor in the acceleration categories vs tesla for an suv/cuv? The plaid model x is supposed to be under 2.5s 0-60. The perf model y is already at 3.5s 0-60. So far only the taycan can match a top end or spec tesla for acceleration, at least in anything approaching a similar price segment.

@@4literv6 Teslas are built like crap. I’ve been waiting years for a properly built EV. Not just this but a dealership network that will back up it’s product properly. The Chinese made Volvos may have the highest quality according to many automotive analysts. People really need to get up to date in terms of Chinese production. They go from cheap to top notch. The Polestar 2s are all made in China and their quality is fine. The Polestar 2 is unofficially Volvo's first electric car. And about SUVs in general, we need variety. I don't think everyone is going for them. I don't particularly like the height of them and I like a sedan with its dedicated and separate cargo space. So, I won't be buying an SUV and really, I think there may be a car buying backlash to them in time. Maybe I'm wrong but you never know with the fickle public. What's in now may not be in forever. This vehicle is too expensive. It shouldn't cost the same as the Polestar 2. I like EVs but will like them more when there are more chargers everywhere and really, recharging them is almost as fast a filling a car up with gas now. They still take too long to charge.
