Not as widespread and mainstream as it is today, but there are fans all over the world who got into KPOP long ago including me. It started during the boom of the Hallyu Wave. I live thousands of miles away from South Korea but got into KPOP after I saw groups like SNSD and BIGBANG featured on a cable channel way back in 2008. When groups like 2NE1 and BIGBANG held world tours, it was successful because they had fans all over the world. Their world tours would have flopped if KPOP wasn't worldwide then, but they already started building a loyal fanbase even before. Groups from the earlier generations helped build the foundation for KPOP to go global. But thanks to BTS coupled with clever marketing from their agency and the dedication of their fans to boost their online presence, they blew up and helped KPOP go *mainstream* Nobody's denying the global impact of BTS and their immense contribution, but at the same time, we also can't deny that KPOP already had a reach before. Even if those senior groups weren't as successful as BTS now, they are successful in their own ways and helped put KPOP on the map. That foundation they helped build is cemented in KPOP history and it can't be erased. *KPOP has grown so much since Seo Taiji and Boys and will only continue to grow exponentially in the years to come* All of the generations from the 1st to the current 4th have all played a huge role. It's a collaborative effort and that's what makes the KPOP industry special. :)

@@KT-qp7wx i agree with you! kpop was definitely global before because of what you said about world tours but it wasn’t really that big in specifically western countries like the USA which is the biggest music industry in the world so i guess it’s hard to say but i personally had never heard of KPOP up until 2017 when one of my friends mentioned BTS - which is when the kpop award show categories in western music started to appear - so although kpop was global before,bts is the main group that certainly made kpop growth increase the highest in my opinion
