"Pissing off the people behind you". Even before I got my Maverick I saw no need to race up to a stop light and my goal was to not stop at all. I still ended up going just as quickly to wherever I was going.

Could not agree more. So many folks complain about gas cost but do nothing to use less. I routinely get high 30’s mpg with my ford fusion 2.5L because I manage brake use and speed.. have 150 k on the original brakes and rotors and have never been in a wreck. The way I look at it, I might piss a few off, but I’m reducing my and their risk.

Thanks so much for the video. I was one of those people who really didn't understand what it all meant. Even the salesman couldn't explain it to me. You laid it out perfectly. I'm a first time hybrid owner. Update: having put just over 700 miles since I've watched this video, my fuel economy has increased significantly. Learning to drive this hybrid truck can be a bit of a challenge. But once you've mastered it, it truly makes all the difference in the world. Thanks again Sam.

Once it becomes habit to drive the Hybrid in the most efficient manner, drive a non-Hybrid in a very similar manner. You'll be shocked how the techniques learned will improve MPG in non-hybrids.

My Ford Fusion Hybrid has similar coaching, brake scores, EV indicators, on its dash. One cool thing is if take a trip to the store, work, or wherever, the car keeps track of what % of that journey (from car on to car off) was done on electricity and how many miles of regenerative braking. Before I really started noticing it, I would have guessed maybe 25% of my driving was electric. No! I go from a low of %30 to a high of 60% of each trip on electric only. No wonder the MPG is so high! I live in a hilly suburban with mostly 50mph speed limits.

Sam, Thank you. I've been waiting for this video. I was hoping to learn what I'm doing wrong with my braking, but it seems either the Maverick is easy to get 100% on the braking coach, or you developed a perfect method to achieve 100%. We bought our 2013 Prius C brand-new, and after nine years I still can't score a perfect 100% on braking. Albeit I'm not the primary driver. In our car the economy coaches are bundled into one gauge. The scores are displayed in three horizontal lines, one for each coach, and each line has about-six individual bars. The bars form anywhere from a partial line, to one solid line for 100%. The coaches are: "Start" for how well or not you take-off. "Cruise" begins calculating upon completing acceleration from "Start." And calculates continuously until the wheels stop. "Stop" for how well you braked to a stop. I can easily get 100% for both Start and Cruise, but it's nearly impossible for me to get 100% for braking/Stop, or even close to that. I only scored 100% one time. I don't know what I did to achieve that. Usually, I score one or two bars, so not even 50%. The primary driver is much better at getting 100%. He states that what the system wants is, just before the car comes to a stop to press hard on the brake. I've tried that method and still can't get 100%. Do you know what kind of braking/stop the system is looking for? Do you have any idea why is this so hard to do?

I had an EV prior to the Maverick and they are similar in certain ways for sure. I'd say that the braking in the Maverick is more picky as where my EV had 1 pedal drive which was super convenient and I almost never used my actual brakes. It would be great if they were to add that feature in future models. I drive a lot of highway for work so I don't expect to break records, but I'm getting mid 40MPG at the moment on average. In town driving is 50+ mpg for those trips.

Another thing that wasn’t mentioned and should have been is the button for modes. Slippery and eco forces the electric to be used more. This gives much better fuel economy. But, you have to set it each time you turn the key on. I was only averaging only 35 mpg in reg mode and now in slippery I’m in the 40’s. And I can get it 60-70 mph on the highway.

I remember driving a rental Fusion Hybrid and using the "L" button to slow down without applying the brake in crazy Orlando traffic and the brake coach would tell me I achieved 100 percent. Do you know if the brake lights are applied when using the "L" button so that traffic is aware you are slowing down? I am an enthusiast who enjoys rowing my own gears ( Save the manuals!), but I must admit I had fun driving that Fusion because of the technical wow factor using the "L" button.

I would say don't need to be very concern about the 100% brake coach score at all time. All the components needs to be used to keep the car going. The big battery, the small battery, also the brake pad. Using the brake pad a little warms up the brake line, the brake pad the rotor so it is not rusting which is good. Therefore everytime if you do 99% that is good enough. XD

The function knob in the center console that reads "LOW" actually works. Next time you're stopping from higher speeds (or any speed), it will double the amount of regen going to the battery. It will also stop the vehicle very quickly without touching the brake pedal. I don't understand why reviewers have never discovered it's purpose. Try it.

To be clear, the electric motor is ALWAYS helping? At least, up to the 100% mark? Since the highway milage is lower than the city mileage, it appears that if you kept a steady 70mph on the highway, the electric motor would either help until it's battery is too low, or not help at all after a certain speed. Can you clear this up?

Not all dealerships are adding mark-ups. Ours didn't. The best way to avoid being a slave to the current market environment is to place and order with a reputable dealer, agree on a price and wait for it to arrive. In this case Mavericks are sold out until orders open for 2023 models. It sucks, but the early bird gets the worm in this market.
