After a night of heated debate, we landed on the all-new 2022 Hyundai Kona N as Daily Motor's Best Car of the Year 2022. It's practical, it's fun, and it's relatively affordable, but above all, the Kona N makes any type of driving a fun experience. Highly recommend.

My wife gave me a qualified thumbs up to get a 2022 Kona N (in Sonic Blue) last summer as a replacement for my 2003 Mazda Protege5, with the understanding that it would be MY CAR. But then she drove the Kona N home to Tucson from Phoenix on I-10, fell in love and decided the car must be HER daily driver, at least every other week. 😍She's 65 and her dad will be 97 this year: The Kona N is the ONLY one of our cars in which he wants to be taken for a drive (and his wheelchair fits just fine in the back with the rear seats folded down).

I absolutely LOVE my Kona N. “Grin machine” is totally right. I giggle whenever I pop it into N mode. This car is just absurd and that’s what makes it charming.

Car and Driver lighting lap for Kona N was extremely impressive. Beat a GTI by 5 seconds! It beat cars that are 60k!

This car has so much personality. It's not close to perfect but it's fun and I recently ended up choosing it over other cars based on how it made me feel behind the wheel. It's just plain enjoyable.

The N is gone it will be an EV shame it went that way.Give it a couple years the whole N division will be gone sad they get rid of 3 of their cool cars.

Enjoyed the video! Just wondering if you guys really do prefer this Kona N over its Elantra N family member. The lack of a sunroof on the Kona N steers me more towards the Elantra N, even though its seats are a tad too aggressive for daily driving, and I prefer hatchback utility over sedans. Also, is the sound quite a bit more loud, and the crackles and pops more boisterous on the 6MT Elantra N compared to the DCT version? Thanks!

Not sure if you're much of a podcast person, but if so, tune into our podcast episode coming out tomorrow and we'll talk about them compared. Or watch our Elantra N review coming out first week of March. I like the Elantra N more to drive, but I'd rather live with the Kona. And I think the majority of shoppers would as well. Kona feels just a small bit nicer.

@@DailyMotor Thanks, I’ll check out the podcast and watch for the upcoming Elantra N review! I’ve noticed other reviewers mention how overly stiff/damped the Kona N is compared to the Elantra N. Of course the Elantra N also has the lower CofG advantage as well as larger backseat space. I do wish the Elantra N had less aggressive seats (for North America) though as the buckets aren’t conducive to daily driving comfort. I’ve test driven a DCT Elantra N and will test drive the Kona N before I make a purchasing decision. Cheers

Im considering this or the 2021 Mazda 3 hatchback turbo I can't decide though I've test drove both now and both are so great cars for about the same price but im in the Midwest would you consider the Kona N or Mazda 3 turbo?

I have this and would have loved it to death if it was more comparable to a Golf R with the added benefit of usable clearance. If it had AWD and all the missing features the EU version has, I would be looking forward to using up more funds for mods. As it stands, I'm still not 100% I want to keep it.

In Europe Kona is €41k Golf R is €60k. That makes them different category. AWD makes a car heavier, much more complicated and more expensive to service. There are pros and cons. If I was willing to pay more I'd check Civic TypeR or Corolla GR maybe Megane RS.

@@telelaci2 Yes it would be heavier and cost more but that isn’t my point. Whatever the added weight and price, I’m saying I would prefer it competed more with the Golf R. A couple of ways by being offered with X changes, not that it should do that at the same price or with same specs/weight. Whatever AWD R&D they would have had to do, whatever motor changes, I would have preferred it was more comparable to a Golf R. The Golf R not only has the benefit of an AWD system but also very good mod support/outcomes on power. I would personally pay the price because that is the car I would be most happy with. I actually really like the Golf R but not the newer design. I love small vehicles but drive large trucks for work lol

@@carloscervantes836 "Whatever the added weight and price..." - OK, I understand your point and I agree, I have a Kona N and I like it, but I'd prefer a Porsche 911 GT3 RS. I could be wrong but I think it's better car in so many way than my Kona. I think you didn't get my point. Kona N is not the rich man's car, it's only $35k in US and €41k in EU. If you are not a rich man you'll think it twice that your car will be €41k or €60k.

Kona N is faster but veloster N is better everything else performance wise Kona better everything else practicality wise imo veloster looks cooler from the front Kona looks cooler from the back 😂

You don't need it. I live in Ontario and I bought conti DWS06+ on 18x8.5 wheels - 235/45R18(tires) Let me tell you, different beast. Quieter ride, handles much tighter on quicker turns, can feel less "drag" during stopped accelerations(most likely from unsprung weight from wheels) And handles the mild snow we've been having with no concerns.

I can follow why such a decision, but.. I don't think all power playful stuff is enough to justify $36K price tag. Cute, teenagery fun, really peppy, good execution from parts bin given the unique vehicle category. Basic practicality. But FOR $36K Interior ridiculously bland and boring, and only three exterior basic colors available that's common from any rental vehicles, this is unacceptable. Coming from KIA brand it doesn't help its cause either in long term or for vehicle resale value. KIA - give it some splashy colors (..for some reason $28K Kia Seltos with AWD has such colors available) to reflect its mechanical character, add some nice highlights for interior and add awd or at least proper limited differential or a safety mode. Add some killer sound system and you will have a winner.

I thought the same until I test drove this nasty overpriced hunk of metal. Biggest mistake ever. Coming from a guy that owned a V8 M5.

Guys, I also love all of Hyundai's N models, however, you didn't really just call Hyundai's wet DCT "reliable," did you? You do realize they were having multiple failures in multiple models that were equipped with the wet DCT, right? To the point a recall was issued. This included Hyundai N's, Sante Fe's, Santa Cruz's, Sonata N-Line's, Kia K5 GT's, and Sorento's. Not hating, just stating facts.

Hahaha, fair point. I suppose I was thinking that by design they're better than a dry clutch, but you're right that they're having issues.

@Daily Motor By design, you're absolutely right, and I had high hopes for them when introduced, especially in comparison to the troublesome 7spd dry dct. Hopefully, when the recall resolution is applied, they will prove to be very reliable in the long term.

In US they recalled more than 50k cars with DCT software problem, based on about 250 cases. So if you have a DCT8 car you have 0.5% chance to get that failure. I wouldn't state that the DCT is not reliable because of that. In Europe, in my country this is minor recall, that means you don't have to go to the service right now, its not urgent, they will fix it when you go to the regular annual service and oil change. Only a software update in DCT controller, not a physical problem. Btw the dry 7 DCT can handle only max 200hp. The wet 8 DCT is good up to 300+ hp 480Nm.

330i only competes in 0-60. In every other performance metric, the Kona N is significantly faster. C&D gave it 2 seconds faster to 100, a full second faster 5-60, half a second faster in the 1/4 and +5mph trap speed, not to mention better handling. Kona N also sounds better than a 330i ever will, and is more "usable"... For like 10k less.

Well lucky for you Honda decided to get rid of the 2.0 turbo in the Accord for 2023 (The only option that made it fun to drive). Your avoidance of fun things has paid off finally...Sadly the new Prius looks to be more exciting to drive and look at. See what you made me say? Shame on you.

Faster and better handing than the accord, more fun to drive, better sounding, more usable, better warranty, and way more unique. The 2.0t Accord is an awesome car, but not nearly as cool or exciting as the Kona N.
