This video of the 2022 Chino Basque Festival, in Chino, Calif., includes the singing of Gernikako Arbola (The Tree of Gernika) (with translation) by the Chino Klika, music by Patrik Larralde's group Zirimiri (en.zirimiri.eus/) and traditional Basque dancing, including the popular Banakoa and "a battle" between mutilak eta neskak (guys and girls). (Young boy dances 07:19)
Among the dances of adoration, Banakoa was performed around the altar during the Catholic mass. In this video we see Banakoa executed in groups of four or more dancers, while the solo dancer often shows off his or her agility and strength. Take note of how flexible some dancers are with their extended kicks.
Many Basque people are born with dance in their step even before they can speak. Whether inspired by imitation or solemn duty, they gather together to perform with and against each other.
