Here it is, the 2022 Cruel Jewel 100! I had an amazing time participating in this race, and I can say without a doubt it was the most difficult physical and mental test I've ever accomplished.

Can't wait to run this race again next week and make a better video! I'm not sure if my running has improved over the last 2 years, but my video editing skills sure have, so I look forward to testing both out!

I WAS THERE! Did the 50 with my dad and brother. I had never done an Ultra before…honestly hadn’t ever run much more than 5 miles. With 0 prep I was able to Finish in 24:40 with ALOT of help from my family haha I fell in love with trail running after that. Great videos brother. Keep pushing.

I'm skipping this year but will be back in 2024. I need the matching belt to match my gigantic buckle...or maybe double up on the buckles...we'll see! I'm doing Georgia Death Race this year so I'll get my share of Coosa though lol.

Thanks! The stache is quickly becoming my signature feature. I'm hoping to keep it for a few more races until my wife either convinces me to shave it or chops it off in my sleep!

Awesome recap man. I was bib 166, finished in 41 hours. Always love to scrub YT after races and find people that recorded during and share their experiences. And yes, that pointless 3 mile out and back, along with the what seemed to be ENDLESS final climb over Coosa, both were infuriating. But, in the end, it all made sense... after all, it is... the CRUEL Jewel. Congrats, and hope to see you out there on another adventure. Be well, from Boston. Tim

It was such a miserable and fun race, and I wouldn't change a thing. There's much about the course that's already fading from memory, but those tough sections are still super vivid and I feel proud looking back on them now. I'm hoping to get up to Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolina's for more races because I had such an awesome experience this year.

Awesome Job man! I suppose to run this race this year. Just got a rib injury and hope it heals by then. Great footage and commentary! Congrats on the finish!

I hope it heals, it's an incredible race but it took everything I had. I got some rib injuries when I did Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai and aside from back injuries they are the most painful in my opinion. There's always Georgia Jewel in September, I have a video on that one and it's an awesome race. Not as tough as Cruel Jewel but same 12pm start time and the Pinhoti trail is awesome.

May I ask what camera you used for recording during the race? Did you use a wide angle lens? I will be running the 100 mile too not sure if I need a wide angle lens.

That one is on my bucket list. I don't have much info however, other than it's also a very difficult race given that it has a 40 hour cut-off and 22k feet elevation gain. My friend ran it this year and DNF'd due to some poor directions he received from someone else's crew, but it was absolutely freezing and there was snow/ice, so in the coming months be prepared for the possibility of wearing/carrying ,multiple layers. Do you have any similar races coming up (or have completed) that are ultra distance with noticeable elevation gain?

@@FeetFirstAthletics Yeah that’s what I heard as well. I just don’t want to get lost since it’s my first 100 miler. But I’ll have a 25 miler, 30 miler and hopefully 50 miler in between those. I’m literally thinking about just signing up for the Cruel Jewel. They said they would still let me in even though I don’t have the requirements but just basically know what I’m signing up for. I just need a beginning of the season race because I have an Ironman at end of season

Fantastic video and congrats. I saw your knees were taped in your finisher pic. Did you tape them mid race or start like that? A great idea for extra support in the last bit of the race where the descents hurtttt.. Good Luck and GDR - lots of familiar terrain!

I actually taped them before the race for extra support, because I had never done anything near that much vert and wasn't taking any chances lol. I may even do the same for GDR since we're not allowed to use trekking pole. Thanks for the comment, I'm happy you liked the video! I'll be back in 2024 most likely for Cruel Jewel, if not for the 100 then at least for the 50 so I can get that awesome leather belt.

@@FeetFirstAthletics I will be watching it some more! great idea - the belt and buckle are a lovely combo. Not sure if you know but the course changed directions this year and is starting in Morgantown so all of the Dragon Spine all at once. If it worked for you at CJ do the same at GDR - more service roads but no poles - although with the new start they would be ok - will be less of a conga line with a couple miles roads.

Did you find the Lone Peaks had enough cushion for you. I know alot love the Olympus for this course. Just curious - I have watched your video a couple times now and find it so useful.

I think the lone peaks were perfect. I prefer a little less cushion because it makes me run "smarter" if that makes sense? Ive used the Mont Blancs for a few races and I get a little careless and he'll strike more, and take more leaps when I should take smaller steps. That being said I haven't used the Olympus, Timps, or Superiors, but I'm sure I'll run some miles in each eventually and have more opinions.

The worst part of that out and back aid station is the course is over 50/100 so they could cut it out and still be fine. No one's gonna complain about carrying an extra bottle to not have to do that.

Oh yea, in the moment it's very frustrating. A few months after the fact though it makes for a good story and I can look back on it almost fondly, in a twisted sort of way.
