Here's my giant/huge Sweet Potato attempt this year! Using 1 slip & 1 entire raised bed! (120cm x 120cm x 30cm) & 170 days of growth! Variety: Hawaiian Sunshine (white skin, purple flesh)
I can say this was an extreme success!!! Holy moly! So in 2020 i attempted a large Sweet Potato root/harvest(150 days, variety: Northern Star), and got a single root at 3.5kg & a total weight short of 10kg! So this time, I was hoping to either grow a single root over 4kg or a total weight at least over 8kg! I didn't get a large volleyball sized root, but a total weight of 18.7kg is absolutely INSANE!!! xD :'D
Technically i harvested this 4 days early,(so 166 days actually) but it's just 4 days + we are scheduled to have a week of rain(which has just started the night of harvest) so, decided to harvest it now! xD
I was worried about this harvest as the leaves were still pretty green, the white variety for me is the worst one, you really have to wait for the leaves to turn yellow, unlike the other varieties, I've harvested this variety in bags(2018, 19, 20 & 21) around 120 days and some produced absolutely nothing xD But I've got a harvest from a bag from this variety so it's not the size, just high nitrogen priority! + i was also worried about some Sweet Potatoes being eaten as a mouse was housing this garden bed -_- it was pulling out a lot of dirt, but it seems nothing was eaten so I'm glad, phew!
Speaking of having leaves that are still pretty green, i don't think this plant reached the heaviest it could have been(could it have reached over 20kg before turning yellow?), but 170 days is pretty long already + i think going any further might just harden the roots and make them stringy, the single giant from 2020 attempt i got was pretty normal, no strings!(150 days) so i think only big ones that are really old (over 200 days?) Is why they get stringy, hmmm!
Anyway, gonna give these out to family & friends, possibly neighbors too! My next giant Sweet Potato attempt, i will use Northern Star variety again, as it seems only that one has a higher storing capacity per root! & i love me some hugeee Sweet Potatoes to harvest, it's extremely exciting & to break a personal record! :D
Here's all my attempts! i will make sure to update them all! :
2020 attempt: • 2020 Giant Sweet Potat...

Please tell me about your fertilizer program for this variety...It is my favorite sweet potato variety and I would like to be able to grow them successfully as you have here. Do you feed them at all?? I noticed you said something about high nitrogen priority. Can you explain that ? I thought that tubers needed more potassium than nitrogen...What am I missing? any helpful tips will be much appreciated...I love watching all of your potato reveals... It is just amazing!! Thank you for sharing them with us.

Hi, I first want to congratulate you on a great job. Watching your video has inspired me to try to grow sweet potatoes, I hope to be successful as you. I have a question, do you pick some of the leaves as it grows for thinning out and if you do, do you eat then raw and/or cooked them? Thank you for a great video, keep up the great work gardening.

@rizesgardening
@rizesgardening Жыл бұрын
Yup i used fertilizer, you can use any organic ones as long as it's a balanced N/P/K feed, application rate depends on how strong it is, once the plant has grown a bit, 1-2 months i follow it up with a fertilizer high in K!

Thanks! I live in Australia! I'm not too sure if they are, you'd probably want to plant a faster/earlier maturing variety, for me the orange Beauregard(which is a vine type) matures first, around 90-100 days, these bush types(Hawaiian Sunshine & Northern Star) need more days to mature You could start them indoors first to give them a head start, or possible grow them in a greenhouse so you could have both an earlier start & later harvest 🤔

Well nothing that wild really! Just the 1 whole raised bed for the 1 slip, topped it up with new compost, added mulch, buried a few vines while it was growing along the bed, and left it in for a very long time! as for fertilizer i start it off with a balanced N/P/K feed, then later on feed it again with fertilizer higher on the Potash side! Both organic fertilizers(you can use synthetic too, it just hurts the soil in the long run so i wouldn't suggest it) & a lot of rain through the whole growing season! + I think i just got lucky this year cause my 2020 attempt didn't even pass 10kg & i did the same steps 😂
@rizesgardening
@rizesgardening 2 жыл бұрын
If you always end up with a huge top continuously growing till the harvest date & roots are skinny, too much nitrogen is usually the issue! & Always make sure when planting, they have enough room that they don't cross over, at least not too much with each other. For this attempt i made sure there's no competition around!

Tell me about it, i was surprised too 😂 I just took care of it like my other sweet potatoes pretty much 😂 this bed the soil is a mix of a lot, the original soil & compost back from 2011-2012, occasionally topping up over the years when the soil shrinks/lowers, before planting this i prepared the bed with new compost, nothing too expensive tho, & used mulch to cover up, basically it!

That is a harvest to remember. What caused the fungus? Will it harm the plant or the soil?
@rizesgardening
@rizesgardening Жыл бұрын
Definitely! The bed was pretty shaded and we've had a really really wet Summer + the bed is pretty old so the fungus kinda grew out of control with all that 😂 I don't think this type was harmful, any form of fungus in the garden indicates a healthy living soil, generally, but for it to be growing ON the bed means it's breaking it down faster, which i don't want so i had to remove it afterwards 😅

@rizesgardening
@rizesgardening Жыл бұрын
Too many slips may have been the main cause, you should still get something decent at 100 days. Since they're already out the ground, if they're big enough to peel they should be okay for eating, but if they're that skinny, you can probably try store them away for next seasons planting, sweet potatoes in the compost won't exactly decompose(unless the whole outside/skin is removed) it might remain as it is and sprout again 😂

Hi there, to be honest the purple sweet potato doesn't always produce well for me over the years i've been growing them compared to other varieties, this harvest was a very big surprise for me, we did have a lot of rain so it could be that 🤷I don't have a website or run classes, but you'll find a lot of videos on KZfaq on how to plant & grow sweet potatoes tho! Once the weather warms up you just plant the sweet potato/s in the ground & wait for the sprouts/slips to appear, they can take up to a month depending, once slips have grown, that's your set of stems to grow sweet potatoes! And this isn't a farm, It's just my backyard! 😂 I live in Australia!
