An in-depth review and close look at the new 2022 Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST. Inspired by the FXRT of the 1980's, this modern version of a middle weight, touring-ready, cruiser couldn't have come at a better time. The riding community has been building this style with help from the aftermarket world for years now. H-D has taken the already popular "base" of the Low Rider S and outfitted it with a newly-redesigned fairing and bags to give it the "Sport Touring" treatment. Matt Laidlaw gives he thoughts after an extended test ride and gives some practical buyer's advice to help you decide if this bike is right for you.

Matt, been checking in for weeks now waiting for you to get your hands on a Low Rider ST for your review, you are the gold standard. I got my name on one as soon as they were announced, got it about a month ago. Poor weather here in Minnesota, just have a couple hundred miles on it so far. Coming off an Ultra Limited. I have to agree with most of your opinions, I"m not 6-6 so I appreciate the size of the Low Rider much more than you do, although even at 5-9 it's still a little cramped compared to an Ultra. I for one don't miss the so-so Harley GPS, Google Maps on your phone is far superior with real time routing anyway. Bluetooth sound system from phone should be fine, but I agree, buttons on the bar to control sound system will be missed. Definitely do not miss the 900+ lbs of the Ultra, the ST puts a smile back on my face that hasn't been there for quite awhile. Funny thing, the minimalist instrumentation gives just about all the information that's really necessary, but I think many would much rather have a space shuttle full of gauges just because it seems like it should be that way! Suspension is perfect, going back to your feedback from the first Softail reviews you did in '18 (best frame/suspension HD makes was your take then). I hated the stock short windshiled, hit me right in the chin, worst possible place, so I got the HD tall windshield which is too narrow, any croswind & it's unbearable to ride without full face helmet. Aftermarket needs to get to work on a functional windshield ASAP. I guess I haven't been telling my buddies that this is going to be the most popular HD ever as you had said (although you have a better feel for this than any of us do at this point), but my gut feel is that it will at least be the most important HD to come along since the Street Glide when it was first introduced. I'm with you, it should have been it's own model (Sport Glide revamped) 'cause there are going to be several variations of this bike over the next few years, and squeezing all of them under the Low Rider banner will be awkward to say the least. How about the next version to be 2-up right out of the box, with floor boards a little lower and further forward than the current pegs, a little more elaboration in the gauge department, and the bluetooth sound bar standard (with maybe basic sound system controls on the bars)? You will sell a TON of these. That Sport Glide was so close but missed in a few important ways that stopped me from buying one. The Heritage is close as well, but as you have mentioned many times, the styling isn't for everyone. Not many people actually like the massive weight of an Ultra or SG or RG when it comes right down to it, zaps so much of the fun out of riding (and stopping and parking...). I have the Low Rider Sundowner seat on mine & the wife says she's just as comfortable back there as she was on our '17 Ultra, so I'm not in the camp who would agree that for comfort you still need to buy a touring chassis bike (but again, I"m not 6-6). You are definitely right about the Softail suspension, this bike absolutely rides better on rough roads than my Ultras did. I could go on & on, my first new HD was a '93 FXR that looked just like the red one you have in the video, so I have been at it awhile. The Low Rider ST isn't a particularly flashy bike by any means but it is absolutely the most fun Harley I have ever owned for ripping around town and short trips, we'll see about highway trips. Disappointed you didn't seem to love it more, wish it fit your better. "Definitely look to see Polaris knocking this one off very soon..." LMAO! Priceless. NOT a Polaris fan. And NO, those aren't Indians no matter what Polaris' marketing people are able to con some people into believing. Thank you Matt!

I am also coming from a ‘17 FLTRU. Am looking for one of these to compliment the RGU as a solo ride for the reasons you mentioned (weight, parking, etc). What are your thoughts on forward controls? Would it fit a bit better? Do you think one would have to bring the bars back as well? Around here a 300-500 mile jaunt is a typical ride day.
@1Steson
@1Steson 2 жыл бұрын
@@jggassert This should make a PERFECT second bike if you're keeping your RG. Maybe Matt will chime in but my take on the foot controls is that it definitely feels a little cramped compared to a touring bike, which has it's floorboards a few inches further forward and slightly lower, a much more natural, comfortable sitting position. I think for me, the air cleaner would present a problem with forward controls, I just can't see how that would work decent. There are Softail aftermarket highway pegs that don't require adding a crash bar, I'm planning to try these for stretching out on the highway instead of forward controls, which would force you to have to deal with the air cleaner all the time. Plus, on the highway, it sure is nice to be able to mix it up over the hours, with the mid controls and highway pegs (have both on my Super Glide & that works well for me). Regarding the bars, I have mine turned so they're as close as possible for comfort but it's still a reach, arms straight out which doesn't feel nearly as comfortable as an Ultra where they're just right there in a comfortable location, elbows slightly bent. I would like to find a riser that keeps the same height as stock, but brings the bars back just an inch or so, I think that would be a big help for being in a natural position & not having to feel like I'm leaning forward all the time.

Love the review that you made. I am 6'1" but fell in love with the look of this bike instantly. Although like you said it might be a little cramped, I went ahead and made the dive in and put the forward controls with mini-floorboards alongside a saddlemen step-up seat. The combo of the two stretched my legs up while lifting me and inch or inch and a half. That being said, I needed to purchase a new windshield so I can minimize the buffeting around the head. Overall, this has been an amazing bike to ride around town and get out on the weekends. Thanks for your awesome review!

By far, the best information and most well put together video on the ST. Great job. Every time I look at other bikes in Harleys lineup, I keep coming back to the Lowrider ST. It just checks all the boxes for me. If I plan on interstate traveling, which I will later on in life, I will cross that bridge and get the touring chassis bike. But for me, and the type of riding I’m planning on doing , this bike is perfect. Thanks for all your hard and info Matt.

Matt, you're videos are top notch. Just amazing. As a touring rider for over 55 years I've owned a lot of touring machines and as far as Harleys, you just got to go with a touring frame for the best comfort. I've gone back to a Road King from the fairing bikes and doubt I'll ever go back. Love the large quick disconnect windshield and I prefer the simple phone mount and earbuds to get Sirius radio and GPS, I can hear it so much better and not be blasting my music to everyone else. The Road King is truly the King of the Road. Ocala Fl.

Another excellent history lesson and review Matt. After calling many of the local SF Bay Area dealerships I was finally able to locate a Lowerider ST to demo and once ridden I put down my deposit and am now waiting for my new Lowrider ST. I was very impressed with the styling and speed of the bike. I was worried about the foot controls being mid and higher than I am used to but once on the bike I had no issues feeling comfortable. Now I look forward to seeing what parts and accessories Harley produces for the bike. Thanks again Matt for another great video.

I own a Road glide special myself and we are looking for something for my wife. This could be it. Now we can test drive what appears to be no easy task due to the enormous success and delivery problems. There are currently no more available for this year. Another great HD History Lesson from Matt!! :-) I saw a Low Rider ST in Oatman Arizona on April 29th, sweet ride for sure. Your recent travel vlog with the crew over 89A to Sedona and Jerome also prompted me to change my plans and make that ride while I was in Laughlin for the so called "River Run" Not much going on in Laughlin but the riding was great!!

Love the vids. Legit knowledge of the history. I have a 14 Low Rider, it was my first motorcycle and a perfect fit for me Miss particular, I love my bike. I'd love to upgrade to a Road Glide special but not interested in the excess weight. This bike would seem a happy compromise.

Great thorough review and intro to what seems like a smash hit for the Motor Company in 2022. Curious to Matt's opinion on the 117 vs 107/114 on this bike. Would like to hear more about that in a future video. Full disclosure - I just picked up an FXLRS with the 117 and am in love with that engine in a softail sized bike. Wonderful work, thanks Matt!

very well made video, I am also 6"6 so its nice getting another tall guys perspective on Harley's and fitment. I just got my first Harley a month ago and although its only a sportster 1200 I love it and am very much hooked on Harleys and look at it as a stepping stone and "trade up" in the future.

Great Review! Thanks Matt. Confirmed my decision to buy a Street Glide ST, I grew inpatient waiting on the Low Rider ST release and now I'm glad I did. Surprising how easily it falls into corners. I think the floorboards are a little higher? But nothing I can't get used to. Definitely the lightest touring bike I've ever owned. Installing a Lithium Braille battery that will loose 24lbs. And other mods to come.

I watched this video back in September before I bought my LRST and just had to watch again. Its a great format and hits on all the major topics everyone would like to know. I was going to get an RG but at 5'6 I just dont feel confident on that Chassis, especially when I have to back it up. I do alot of twisty rides and only do 1 or 2 long rides a year so having a touring chassis wasnt a must have for me. Im an aggressive rider and really like to lean in the twisties and I really feel so confident when I ride the LRST. I dislike not having the infotainment system but my phone mounted on the handlebars and using bluetooth headphones have been fine. Another thing is i think this fairing is much better at stopping the wind than most people think, I rented a street glide last year and the buffeting on the highway at 70+ was ridiculous compared to this smaller fairing.

Thanks for the comment Ben. You got some great points there. Yea, the wind performance is going to vary greatly based on your size and helmet setup etc. Thanks for the great comment.

Thanks for the review Matt! I was one of the lucky one's to get an allocation from my local dealership up here in British Columbia Canada. They called me last week saying that the bike was in and I actually put them off a few days because I was waiting for your review to come out. I'm already a lucky owner of a 2018 CVO Road Glide in Gunship Gray so when it was first announced that Harley was coming out with a Low Rider S in Gunship my Harley sales rep called me right away to let me know and I put down a deposit on the spot. When it was announced later on that there would also be a touring version of the same bike I was torn. So the day finally came last week where I found myself in the fortunate dilemma of having to choose between a 2022 Low Rider S or going for the Low Rider ST. Your review hadn't come out yet because you were still masterfully editing it and I was forced to make the decision all on my own. As stressful as it was I ended up going with the ST but I honestly don't think I could have made a bad decision between the two bikes. The suspension and handling are miles ahead of my last 2016 Low Rider S. I've purchased a few Harley's in the past based in part from one of your reviews or two. One day I hope to ride out to L.A. and ride some of those amazing canyon roads that I've seen in your videos. Keep up the great work!
