The 2022 Honda CRF250 is the most updated bike of the 2022 season and in This Week in MXA episode #36, we put the new bike to the test against last year's model. In a year when most motorcycle manufacturers stuck to their guns with small updates, Honda completely revamped it's CRF250 to match the updates the CRF450 gained in 2021-baring the hydraulic clutch actuation. The new CRF250 has dropped weight, it has dropped the dual muffler design for a single muffler, it has the new 450 frame, 10-millimeter longer forks, a new shock with the clicker adjusters on the right side instead of left, the upside air filter with increased air capacity in the airbox, a new engine, new bodywork, new mapping and more.
Most notably, the power curve has changed on the CRF250. The 2021 model was an all-out revving machine that needed to be run high in the RPMs to make power. Now, the 2022 CRF250 has more bottom end power, while sacrificing some of it's top end speed. The final horsepower number is actually .7 less on the new 250, but it feels faster because the new engine is easier to use.

Great lap time comparison. Do you think the difference in suspension feel was simply the new '22 CRF250R was not fully broke in compared to the '21 CRF250R which had much more time on it? Could you feel any difference in chassis compliance between the bikes?
@joshmosiman1955
@joshmosiman1955 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks glad you dig it! I don't think break in was an issue because the 2022 already had 11 hours on it when we shot this video, just had been freshened up with new plastics. Even our heavier testers thought the forks were stiff. Chassis compliance felt like the 2021 was nicer, but a lot of that was probably the forks being too stiff on the 2022

@@joshmosiman1955 this statment seem to contradict what you said in the first ride video about the forks. You said before that they were too soft and you had to add 3 clicks to get better hold up.

@tom97zr2 2 жыл бұрын
I did the valving in the forks on my 2022 and it was much stiffer than the 2020 valving. The 2022 uses .30mm shims in the high speed shim stack, never seen that before on any stock fork valving.

The 2022 Honda CRF250 has no straight line stability and the bike is radically stiff with no adjustments. I was riding a 2020 YZ250F and with no adjustments was very easy to ride. The Honda is extremely lighter and pulls longer and I think the bottom end is great, but its hard to trust going down over breaking bumps. I went 5 clicks softer on the forks and a half turn out on the shock. This helped setting adjustment did help quite a bit. I bought this bike because of all the reviews of how great it was and because I wanted to get faster in corners. I have only put 2 hours on it so hoping it breaks in a little more.

Josh, what I would be interested to see are two things: 1) what does it take to get the suspension set up, and who is the writer it is being set up for. To say a fork is set up for doesn't really tell us anything in and of itself. 2) more timed laps. Average of ten laps sounds sensible.

Are those average lap times over multiple laps and multiple sessions? A single lap at different times will not really tell you the whole story. That much difference can be the difference between a 450 and a 250 in some cases. Seems kind of hard to believe...
@joshmosiman1955
@joshmosiman1955 2 жыл бұрын
One lap sprint, not an average. And they were done back to back without any water break or rest in-between. Swapped bikes and went out for the next lap. I did my best to hit the same lines and made sure I had plenty of space so I wasn't having to pass anyone and my lap wasn't hindered! We don't always do lap time comparisons for the reasons you brought up because its not always the best way to determine a winner and usually you can feel the difference and which one is better without a lap time. We did it for fun and I think this was the most accurate way for us to do it with the least amount of variables

Eh, 2 seconds could be easily rider variables rather machine allowing a faster lap time. I think a real test would be do 50 laps over a week or two, average them out to find actual average lap times. Doing only one test is going to allow a ton of potential errors that would be ironed out with 50 laps... Also jumping on another bike and only doing a lap or two doesn't allow riders to really get to know that machine.

Great video, but I beleive two seconds it's to much. New honda 2022 has a good torque on a low RPM but Glen Helen doesn't seems to me is a track that needs a torque to push out at the low speed a bike. Perhaps a seconds could be. Weight could be a liter more or less inside the tank , because we are not talking about a lot of differencies. Obviusly 250\2022 it is a good bike and me coming down from the 250/21 CRF SRS I found lot of lack on a high RPM where you do not have to deal much to shift gears from a corner to another , trying to rallent the inertial weight gained. Anyway, was a really good job and woud be nice to have some telemetry graphics to see body efforts applied to reach the speed. Thank you for this comparison, was really interesting.

The 2021 had 30 hours and the 2022 had 11 hours when this video was shot. The best case scenario would be if they were both at 10 hours so they were broke in, but still fresh. However, the general test and feedback would still be the same, we have dyno numbers comparing them and the 2022 is stronger down low, but actually 0.7 horsepower slower on top. Very similar to the YZ250F power curve.

There is no such thing as a CRF250. It's either a CRF250R, a CRF250X, a CRF250F, or a CRF250L. If you're going to do a test on bikes, at least get your nomenclature right. Sheesh.
@Dylans503
@Dylans503 2 жыл бұрын
When you say CRF 250 everyone knows you mean the original, motocross model. Nobody calls a crf250 a crf250R. That's common knowledge and goes without saying. And you forgot the crf250rx by the way.

@@Dylans503 How quaint. There are 4 CRF250 models and you somehow think “…everyone knows…” ROFLMAO. I don’t know if you’re new or you just aren’t thinking outside of your small box, but anyone who’s been around Honda motorcycles for a while knows there’s a huge difference between the CRF250F, the X, the L and the R. I own two of these. Please use the names given by Honda so everyone knows which of the 4 CRF250 models you’re talking about.
@Dylans503
@Dylans503 2 жыл бұрын
@@hansschweikert9153 you know you're trying to lecture a MOTOCROSS magazine that's been around since the 70s on what terminology is appropriate?...Oh wait, you own two models! You must know better then, you even know the FULL model names! Wow!..looks like you forgot how to count though, because i just told you there was a RX model. And actually, they've discontinued the X and L model. Just the R, F, and RX now, and guess which one is for motocross? Its the original, R model No, im not new, I've raced for 20 years actually, and i didn't argue that the models are all the same, did i? So your patronizing attitude was pretty unnecessary. When someone says crf 250, or crf 450, unless you describe that it's a L, X, F, or RX model its common knowledge that you're referring to the R model, and if you don't know that, then YOU are the one that's out of the loop. You probably don't ride much, or mainly ride gravel roads, or don't have many friends that ride, right? The crf250R and 450R are the most sold dirt bike models. They are what the other models are based off of as well, even the 450L models motor as of recently. The R is the original, AND most popular models in the CRF lineup. So its extremely common for people to disregard the "R". Even when in conversation it's common to assume that "CRF" refers to the R model.
