In the very heated debate of whether to choose a 250 or a 450, I offer some perspective in this video. See, if you only ride a dirt bike around the block, or down a boring dirt road, I can see why you might get the sense that the 250s don't have the power you want.
On the other hand, get them out on a trail (or a track even)... and all that fades away. This bike is insane fast and your speed is not limited by the displacement of the motor. Your speed and fun is limited by only one thing. You.
That doesn't mean that I don't really like riding the 450 version of this bike, because I do. It's a different kind of fun though. Each has it's own flavor, but if I'm having a chill day with my boys, I think I opt for the 250 version. I have a different mindset when swinging a leg over the 450 where I'm more locked in, and more aggressive mentally when on the 450. Which is at odds with my throttle hand because it's just the opposite when riding the bikes. My throttle hand has to be tamer, or at least more precise when I'm on the 450.
What a dichotomy!

My primary bike is a CRF 250f, never overheats, dosen't need a fan. Backup bike is a XR 200r. Low power, crappy brakes and the suspension? But I love riding this bike. It seems like a lot of people and the industry are loosing sight of what makes this sport fun. 10 grand for a bike and then upgrade the suspension, cooling, mapping. I don't get it. Guess I'm old. I will shut up now.

Hence the reason we are all waiting for Honda to pull their heads out and build us a CRF350RX and CR350X models so we can still play and have fun, without the close to death moments that the 450 brings... Those old XRs are still some of the most enjoyable bikes to putter around on!

You are so right on. I have the 250F and I put some money into it, an updated fork kit, and new rear shock, pipe and spark arrestor, and new IRC tires. It's a great bike. A little heavy, but once it's on the trail it works great. If Honda ever built a lightweight great suspended air-cooled 4-stroke, watch out.

Honestly the 250f with $1500 worth of suspension is a really fun bike. I'm 225 pounds so stock it was too soft but all I want to do is ride around mostly below 25mph and the power is just fine. 5 more would be great but it's fine as is.

"If you're going to ride all day..." There's the key. I'd take a 250 over a 450 in an 'all day' ride any day. The riders on the 450 will be shot at the end of the day when the 250 riders will be ready for more, relatively speaking.

I bet that thing is amazing! -The "big bore" 250Fs are the FASTEST bike for ANY rider! The have grunt, they have agility & handling, and they are the easiest on the body and mind! I bet you'd kill me on both race bikes with a Honda Red Moto CRF300RX - even with a FULLY MODIFIED TM Racing EN300ES 2 stroke engine that I threw everything but the kitchen sink at it from powerparts catalog (it has EVERYTHING that their TM Racing USA team race bikes have except they go with a STIC Metering Block or Smart Carb 2, and I just have a JD Jetting kit for the Keihin PWK 38). I personally have a 22 CRF450R-S (2020 twin pipe version) that I converted to a CRF450RX (for longevity/durability), and boy have I drained the bank account building it! lol I put Pro Wheels 70R 21in/18in offroad wheel combo with a Dirt Tricks 14/52 final drive w/Regina Gold 520 chain, put the Red Moto billet in-line cooler with their radiator hoses, CV4 radiator cap, trail tech fan, Boyesen Supercooler, Hinson Racing Momentum Billetproof Clutch w/ XPR Engines Clutch arm mated to Ride Engineering billet clutch cable bracket to a ARC RC-8 Works Perch, Akropovic Full Exhaust system, Acerbis oversize tank, Pro Moto Billet kickstand, and Twin Air Powerflow kit with Twin Air Radiator sleeves. Now just trying to figure out if I'm gonna go with a XPR Mapped Vortex ECU, or an HP Race Development/Taco Moto Mapped Athena Get RX1 Pro ECU?? Do you have any suggestions?? I'm stumped, cause I heard Taco Moto maps are great from some, and lackluster and over-hyped from others - I heard that the RX1 Pro is amazing technology though, and has a way faster processor and added tech at basically the same price point as the Vortex - but I bought most of my stuff from Chad & Leah Braun at XPR Engines and hear nothing but great things about their mapping as thry do many off-road pro engines and are in charge of the MotoconceptsHonda Racing Team...just don't know if I'd want to go with higher end tech with the Athena Get RX1 Pro, as I heard it's almost cheating with that system. Heard the Vortex is really outdated, and the RX1 Pro also has a censor for barometric pressure, and I'll be riding at altitude in Cascade mountains in WA state, to the deep sugar sand of the Atlantic coast of the Carolinas! So what do you think, since you clearly have the best bike in the world, and must be more knowledgeable, experienced, and qualified than myself??

Does it feel any heavier? I have a sumo setup on mine but also ride it on single track a ton. I was thinking of getting a second two stroke but would rather big bore it when it’s time for a top end if it gives it enough grunt without feeling heavy. I’m not into hard enduro or anything. Just chill single track in the woods.
@DirtZen

@@MPLSdunk Not at all. If anything it made it easier to manage in the tighter stuff. It's always a tough call, it's very hard to have 1 bike that does it all. The 2 strokes are really hard to beat in more technical riding and they run a lot cooler. But 4 strokes are seriously capable, but feel heavier and jerkier in the tough stuff. Hard to pick your poison! :). I'm a pretty chill rider and I ended up with a 2 stroke for more rocky technical single track and a 4 stroke for more flowly trails. It's kinda fun being spoiled 😎

@@DirtZen first mod I did was put a fan on, so I got the heat managed. it's true you can't have one bike to do it all but I feel like the 250rx is good enough. the other thing nobody talks about is speed. my boys trainer is great in the single track but feels sketchy at 50mph where my bike is rock solid. good to hear you like the big bore, I'll do that before I make any decisions. a lot easier to justify a big bore than a expensive 2 stroke I'll ride a few times a month tops.

Kyle you're 10000% correct. I have a 250fx. I'm 190lbs athletic build and I laugh every time I go ride and guys 150lbs soaking wet show up on 450's and 500's because its "faster." 5 turns later they are reevaluating their life. We're also on the east coast riding NEPG style trails mostly. Always makes me laugh when someone starts saying it doesn't have enough power. On a side note. I had a crf250r in some seriously tight stuff, never had issues with boiling over. No fan, nothing. Modern radiators do a dang good job these days without the extra help of a fan. You'd be surprised.

What I ask when people complain too much about power I ask back, do you have the technique? Unless you're racing baja on an open desert you don't need that much power and you probably wouldn't even use that much power to it's full potential.

The FX has more power, better suspension, The Hondas power is up from 21, but still lacking compared to FX, suspension isn’t bad. Honda handles razor sharp though and feels lighter, and does it look good, YES… Can’t go wrong with either.

I just bought the 2022 crf450rx. I would have gotten the 250 but it wasn't available. The price difference was only $1200. The dealer told me id prob save that in maintenance in a few years having the 450. He said the 450 will require less top ends over the life of the bike, can anyone confirm this is true?

Same here in Manitoba, no 250’s in sight so I went for the 450RX. Wow power everywhere, they told me the same thing I’ll save on maintenance and rebuilds because I wouldn’t ring it out as much as the 250. I mainly trail ride with the family 80% and the rest fast pace or at the track. Can’t wait for our snow to melt so I can start putting serious miles on. Ride Red and have fun, good luck with your bike

Wait till you get in your forties; the displacement draw is real on the bigger bikes. Kinetic energy, rotating mass, throwing it all around all day, robs “fun” energy from the experience, today’s smaller displacement bikes really are all you need…plus legacy techniques applied, a good 125 or 150 two stroke will do enough and will make it “fun”! Ok, even a four stroke 250….plus once you go down, 300, 350, 450 is a phat ass crusher on the bod!

After owning/riding a 450 over many years now I will never go back to a 250! 250 is best for kids coming from smaller bikes or older men who complain a lot an out of shape that can’t handle 450s. Remember: 250s in super cross are very beefed up an definitely not the bikes you get off the dealership floor. And you will have to spend thousands extra of dollars to have a 250 MX bike like the pros he is comparing to in super cross. As said in this video, “Just keep in mind”

Alot of people's mentality is that because they can't ride quick they can make up the difference with either 450 or 500 which is so far from the truth, but give a 450 or 500 to a pro and they make it faster. Moral of the story cc does not equal speed generally. Just saying.

Speaking of the Atlanta SX, You do realize that 1. These are the best 250 riders on the planet? 2. Several 250 riders came up short, not just hunter. 3. These guys weigh about 145lbs soaking wet. 4. Those 250s are ALL factory bikes, which have waaay more power and ability than a stock bike. In fact, they don’t even compare. But seems like you keep going back and forth depending on what bike you are on. It’s like a fickle girlfriend. One video your talking about how awesome it is to have the power of the 450, going up hills, etc, then your talking about how the 250 is enough. Sure hope people aren’t spending big bucks on a new bike based on your opinion for the week. Maybe it’s because you are a new rider, but seems odd to keep going back and forth on this stuff, like you don’t have enough hours on each bike to really decided which is best. Hopefully people have enough riding experience and understanding to make the choice on their own.

Simply opinions of people that don't mean anything in the industry. And it always seems like they test the 450 before the 250 just to come to the conclusions it's under power. 250 is phenomenal for an all-day ride. It takes a real man to handle 450 in tight trails.
