The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is certainly one of the more attention-grabbing EVs on sale right now, but what's it like living with one with a young family? Join me for a full walkaround and drive of this 78kWh single motor Ultimate spec car for my thoughts on living with one for a bit. It's mostly great.
Here's the Ducati video I mention:

Had my Ioniq 5 Project 45 since September. Fab car. Totally agree with your comments about a relaxing, quiet drive. I enjoy the 300bhp & AWD performance. No s/w or issues at all really. Plenty of range & rapid charging is critical

We got the car in June last year as RWD big battery and I wouldn´t want any other car anymore. We made a trip to south spain with our 7month old daughter in 19hrs (1780km) which I think is ridiculously good considering we had some Baby-Issue-Stops as well. The overall experience despite the bespoken issues is outstanding and fast charging especially for longer trips is brilliant. We had some issues tho with Ionity sometimes not delivering the speed in various temperatures. So hopefully this will be fixt with the upcoming preconditioning update. I´m mostly impressed by the efficiency in mixed traffic. Ofc on the highway (especially being German and above 130kph) the efficiency becomes a drama. But in mixed conditions we were able to idle between 16 and 18 kwh even in winter times without looking too much at drive mode etc. (oh yeah and we have shabby winter wheels ngl) So great review of a great car.

Great review. It really is the best family EV on the market currently IMHO. At 15:23 to 15:26 when things went "really sideways" bare in mind the roadway started with the dotted lines. The lane keeping assist would have detected the line close to side of the vehicle and added a little bit more 'sideways' shove. Might be worth keeping it disengaged at high speed as you do.

I got mine here in Canada on Feb. 1 and I’m really liking it. I got a long range RWD to get the extra range, and I’m happy with the choice. It might have a few little quirks, but overall it’s a really enjoyable driving experience and I love the styling.

Ordered mine in the Netherlands in April 2022; a bit of a wait before it will be delivered though. We also liked all the things you mentioned, and particularly the easy of getting in and out of the car, and the nearly flat loading floor in the back, i.e. no bent over lifting to get something out of the boot.

Good video Tim - get my Ultimate RWD next week after a 5 month wait! Heard mine is a model-year 22.5 version so lacking a couple of features but my biggest concern is the lack of a rear wiper. Will investigate glass treatments!

Thanks for the review Tim. We've just ordered ours a couple of days ago. We went for the Premium 73kWh rear wheel drive. Lead time is December. That's right we have to wait till December. They have also stopped the pop out handles as it requires a specific chip and can not be made at the moment. So they have removed that feature on all of the models unfortunately. Looking forward to drive when we finally get it.

The pedals should have Play/Stop icons shirley? That ‘corner’ roundabout exit is just down the road from the Esso. There’s often diesel on the road there to help achieve super fun snap oversteer. I love the look of these. Especially the big Z on the flanks and the slim 6-bit lights 🤓

Well done great review , I would like to know how you found the car in heavy rain and on dirty roads with the lack of the rear wiper , I did a test drive in Canada and within 10 mins could not see a thing , we are not able as of yet to have the rear facing camera on full time while driving forward which believe you can in the UK. It was not however a deal breaker I ordered the AWD Long Range full Ultimate package so I will be getting a 2023 model which I believe a lot of the small software glitches will be taken care of. Thanks for the review .

Yes! The lack of a rear wipe was appalling. It rained the day after I filmed this review and I couldn't see out the back of the car until I physically cleaned the rear window. The aero of the car means the back window gets filthy really, really quickly - and there's no way of clearing it. It's a pain in the arse.

In Sweden I think we only have 2 interiors, black or white (or dark and light). I gather other countries have light greyish ones too Is this the "whitest" option (the one I think we have in Sweden) in the video? If so, how does it work with kids/rainy/snowy weather? Does it get grubby fast? I've only ever had black interiors but I really like the white one in Ioniq and I'm seriously considering it... Black (or possibly white) car with white interior.

I think it looks great. Can you lower the boot floor to create more height between floor and load cover, or is it just cubby space down there? Couldn't quite see from the quick look. Hopefully former, makes loading stuff (bloody prams) so much easier as demonstrated by your pram handle sticking out above the load cover :D
@TimRodieDrivesStuff
@TimRodieDrivesStuff 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's not an adjustable boot floor from memory - underneath is a couple of pre-formed spaces for cables and stuff. The boot's not actually that shallow, but I got a Bugaboo Cameleon 3 in it just fine with plenty of other stuff (I could probably have got the handle below the load cover if I tried), and that's a pretty huge buggy. Buggies are the bane of my life...
@bilgyno1
@bilgyno1 2 жыл бұрын
If you choose a version with the Bose system, the subwoofer is taking up a massive part of the underfloor compartment. In those versions, you cannot lower the floor. Perhaps in the most basic version, but try that at the dealer's. In practice, the boot is still quite big. You can slide the rear seats forward (still OK to sit in the back with my 1.80 m) , and remove the boot cover to have a bit more loading height.

As a potential customer, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you could buy the top-spec Ultimate (as featured in this video) and it would include those pop-out door handles, which seem to be present on every demo and press car you see, even the Premium trim ones. The reality is that other than the P45 and some 'mistake' cars, those door handles aren't available in the UK. Shame that Hyundai seems intent on misleading everyone to think they are...

In fact, they're already cheaper to run than comparable fossil cars. Less maintenance, lower fuel costs. I was driving an old 2013 second hand diesel Renault Megane station wagon, and this only costs me about €100-150 more per month. But that's for the full spec Long Range version. If I'd opted for the basic version, it would have been the same monthly cost. And this is for a new car in a much more luxurious price class, with way more tech and options. Anyway, way more affordable EVs are coming up soon. Somewhere between now and 5 years, an EV with decent range will be cheaper to buy in every market segment. The If you buy a new fossil car right now, you might have to accept a big depreciation if you try to sell it in 2027/28.

@@bilgyno1 that's a huge point: ICE cars are going to depreciate like anvils the closer you get to 2030. They already depreciate far more than EVs, which is why lease deals on electrics are so good. Buying a brand new ICE car right now means committing to throwing a lot of that initial cost away.
