I've owned Lexus 4 RX SUVs since 2009, 997 GTS since 2015 and wife has GLC 300. Lexus you buy for reliability, smooth calm / relaxed drive and is never out of place in any setting. Nothing goes wrong on the RX. The dealers are great and the annual service reasonable and now includes 12 month extended warranty. Never any nasty surprises. Whereas Porsche want c£2,500 for 24 months warranty and the UK main dealer servicing is a rip off always trying to fleece you.

Great review as always, Thomas! One of the key reason for Toyota reliability is the extensive range of hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. These cars are much more reliable because the ICE are not as stressed and the combination of electric only/hybrid modes help to keep the ICE in it's optimum range. The use of the e-CVT helps to cushion drivetrain shock too.

My experience with dealerships in the UK at least is that they are pretty much as bad as most others. I've had a Lexus IS and now have a RX450h, but I've had similar issues with things not being fixed that I have asked as my local BMW dealers. Also fit and finish on the RX is not good, lots of rattles and loose trim (particularly with the moon roof but also the dashboard) it really needs a redisign badly.

I was stunned to see this huge heavy RX450 Lexus reaching its top speed of 213km/h on autobahn. Beautiful car so far and very good and critical review. We all all talk about reliability in terms of the car like this Lexus but I think it’s time to mention reliability in terms of the car reviews and cars reviewers. I didn’t know that I could need Thomas’s first ever Lexus SUV review to buy my first Lexus. That’s what I call a reliable review cause the information he provided years ago is still of the real interest today. While technology evolves over the time the review reminds the same but still informative enough to influence your buying car decision. Thomas and Thomas’s reviews reliability are outstanding. That’s my opinion.

This Lexus may not be able to compete with it's German competitors in terms of the more modern tech but Lexus takes a different approach. They watch where their German competitors go wrong before introducing new tech because Lexus means reliability, something NONE of it's German rivals can match. I'm not in the market for one of these cars but reliability is by far the most important factor when I buy a new car. Lexus has improved the new generation NX so much over the previous version I expect the next generation of the RX to be a big improvement in terms of more modern tech than this car. If you want reliability over the long term, the Lexus is the clear choice.

You should not choose a car because of the brand. The car and its model must be earned in order to be bought. Lexus is no heaven or makes you feel blissful. It does not automatically mean that it is the best possible choice. Not even every time, not even close. The comparison is always worth it. Lexus rx competes in the price range which includes Toyota Highlander, BMW x4 and rx are not among the top three. BMW x4 vs Lexus rx : The X4’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The RX Series doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners. The X4 has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The RX Series doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed. To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the X4. But it costs extra on the RX Series. The X4’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the RX Series’ (12 vs. 6 years). BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the X4 for 2 years and 26000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the RX Series (3/36,000 vs. 1/10,000). There are over 43 percent more BMW dealers than there are Lexus dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the X4’s warranty. On the EPA test cycle the X4 gets better mileage than the RX Series 60 to 0 MPH : x4 109 feet, RX Series 123 feet The X4’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50.2% to 49.8%) than the RX Series’ (57% to 43%). This gives the X4 more stable handling and braking. The X4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the RX Series with its rear seat up (23.7 vs. 16 cubic feet). The X4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the RX Series with its rear seat folded (50.5 vs. 32.6 cubic feet). BMW x4 reliability is as good as rx. If you switch to a lower price range with a Lexus nx, Lexus nx vs Lexus rx : Lexus nx is cheaper. The Rx has a larger interior. In a crash test using a dummy (doll), rx is much safer than nx. In the series where the Lexus nx is, it has a Volvo xc40, Toyota rav4, BMW x1, which are safer than the nx. Neck injuries occur with a 46% probability on a Lexus nx ride in a 50km/h (35mph) crash test where a dummy ( doll ) was used. Here is results : The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on vehicles. Neck Injury Risk : Lexus nx driver 46% passenger 42%. Audi a3 driver 45% passenger 34%. Lexus is driver 35% passenger 41%. Toyota rav4 driver 29% passenger 37%. BMW x1 driver 32% passenger 31%. Lexus es driver 24% passenger 33%. Volvo s60 driver 26% passenger 30%. Audi a4 driver 26% passenger 25%. Toyota camry driver 20% passenger 21%. The Toyota rav4 will be significantly cheaper than the Lexus rx or BMW x4 during the five-year ownership period. I choose the sedan car model myself. Toyota Camry is at least safe, car crush test 5 star in every segment ( unlike suv -> 4 star ), although not the best in all areas, much cheaper + better reliability, better fuel economy ( than mostly suv ) + all wheel drive if you want. Choice is yours Thank you

Personally, I can state that Lexus dealerships treat their customers intelligently and make their customer's purchasing experience amazing. ( Canadian experience) I was shopping around for a different brand after driving Lexus RX for more than 13 years but Lexus' level of service is what sold me again. I was treated in such a way that was above an beyond the other dealerships even in the same German vehicle category. I agree that Lexus design language is not the most modern and I admit that I was on the fence because of it but again the no non-sense approach and amazing customer service is what sold me again. That was more important to me than a nice, modern interior design and a better driving dynamics that plays little role in everyday driving and good ownership experience. Where I am only Porsche dealership had as good of a customer review as Lexus did.

No turbochargers or fancy electronic that make you stay in the garage every 5000km and spend half of your salary. You just bay one of those RX and drive free like a wind. Hi, nice video and like from Australia. To be honest, it is really interesting to see a German version Lexus, even this brand is not as popular as they are in North America here in Australia. For such a heavy SUV, the V6 hybrid engine makes more sense than a 2.0 turbo petrol one which this car offers for sure. That’s why European brands are dominant in this segment as they offer efficient diesel engines.

There are hardly any new diesel ICE cars being introduced into the market now as all major European countries are banning sales of new ICE cars from 2025 (starting with Norway). For countries in Africa, South America, Asia and Australia, European and Japanese car manufacturers will continue selling ICE cars using existing European and US emission technology until BEVs become the norm there.

No the main reason German SUV are popular in this segment is Business lease and image. People who lease or sometimes buy these cars dont care about long term reliability and sustainability because they will buy a new car in 3/4 years. If you buy German SUVs second hand than the financial fun begins. They are money pits

11:20 don't know why you're acting so surprised, Lexus clearly reports the RX's top speed as 200 km/h. My 2012 GS 450h was a bit faster, it was limited at 250 km/h due to heating of the electric motors but had enough power to go faster. But there's more to driving than just going fast which is why the RX is designed for relaxed driving, fuel efficiency and reliability - three categories where it pounds the German competition into the ground.

Super Video!

This car i think it is a good car to Own one not to lease and great comfy for a lot of people. I think mercedes should go this way rather than go tech geeky and too sporty , this is old mercedes way with German Engineering (w124, w140 for example) Classy ,Comfy , Luxury , Easy to use , Reliable but not too geeky tech like modern mercedes nowadays.

I think in terms of reliability it's a good idea to look at markets outside of Europe like the USA and Australia. There people do big miles, and it's not uncommon to see Lexus's with 300k+ miles on them without a single breakdown. That's why the RX sells so well in the states and why European brands, particularly German and British brands have such a bad reputation over there. Toyota products just work!

Lexus rx series didnt even make any significant upgrades in their interior unless in the screen part since 2018, at least it's just a matter of screen size and on the touchscreen only,, thats why the interior looks outdated. I hope that Lexus will apply a new interior in the facelift of the model that is exactly the same as the interior of the Lexus LF-1

Wonderful car imho. Old school is sooo much better than current trend for touchscreen and hi tech interfaces which drives ones nuts (no pun intended) as they are a million miles away in terms of interactivity and sensation. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. But each to their own. I can understand why someone spending a lot on a car may expect lots of electronic bells and whistles. Not for me. Love tech but touchscreen-heavy cars? Nope.

Refreshing to see this brand here but... Lexus needs few diesel engines in their lineup for EU market to be able to compete with germans since 95% of their sales are 2.0L or 3.0L diesels. That alone would dramatically increse market share of this brand.

British cars (wheel on the right) used to have the indicator on the right also so you could change gear and indicate with a flick of the finger. This was gradually changed from the late 60s as it was cheaper not to bother moving it when converting from left hand drive to right hand drive for UK market (+SAF, Aus, Japan etc)

@@richardlionheart3965 For UK and Ireland this is true since their cars are EU spec but for other RHD markets cars locally produced will always have indicators/turn signals on the right stalk. these lexus cars are nifty, but too boring for me, its the type of car to get if you are someones aunt, grandmother, maybe just someone who is uninterested in cars. or you already have a hardcore sportscar sitting in the garage waiting for spring, and need some general purpose appliance to go A to B, but I adopt the strategy of having only one car so it needs to be more enthusiast and just barely daily-able enough that I can drive it all the time throughout the year

My experience (2018 RX 450h) is that reliability is good (once you get the fuel pump recalled!) But fit and finish is nowhere near rivals.
