I guess I shouldn't have trusted the commentators, but they seemed so confident in deeming that to be an erroneous call, I figured they had recently looked up the rule due to a similar case. Also, there have been some pretty egregious calls by refs recently (e.g. calling foot fault against Anna Bright even though the ball had already bounced), so my confidence in them has taken a hit. But alas, the ref made the right call indeed: 11.L.5.b. Except on the serve, if the ball goes over the net and hits the center base, or any part of the horizontal bar, or the ball gets caught between the net and the horizontal bar, a replay will be called. Other than on the serve, if the ball goes over the net and bounces on the court and then performs any of the 3 above listed actions, a replay shall occur.

This is because the tournament is a double elimination bracket, and the Johns brothers had lost a previous match to Devilliers/McGuffin, and then went undefeated in the loser's bracket to face Johnson/Bar in the winner's bracket final. As Johnson/Bar then lost that match, each team has lost 1 match and therefore there must be another match comprised of a single game to 15 to give one team their second loss and be eliminated.

Congratulations you just invented tennis. Pickleball combines parts of tennis with parts of table tennis and adds some more strategy with the incorporation of slow play at the net which doesn’t really exist in either of the others.
