The GM L3B Turbomax 2.7L motor has been known to consume oil. I recommend checking the oil level frequently and changing it out sooner and more frequently than the OLM says. My experience with this motor is it burns between 1 and 1.5 quarts of oil over the course of an oil change of 5,000 miles. I top it off every 1000 miles or so to keep the level normal. I have checked it once and the oil level didn't even register on the dipstick! It is not leaking, anywhere, I have done a thorough inspection of the engine, and there are no drip marks anywhere that I can see. I recently switched to a high mileage oil to see if that helps with the oil consumption.
Trucks that can be equipped with this engine:
2019+ Chevy Silverado
2019+ GMC Sierra
2023+ Chevy Colorado
2023+ GMC Canyon
The motor RPO code is mostly L3B, but also seen as L2R in some work truck models on the 2023+ Colorado/Canyon

I had a 2022 Sierra with the 2.7L. It also consumed about 1-1.5 qts between oil changes and I didn't tow anything. I change my own oil, but went into the dealership every 1000 miles and they did an oil consumption analysis and submitted it to GM. It used 1.25 qts in those 6000 miles. However, I didn't hang onto the truck long enough to hear what GM had to say. I never got over 18 mpg highway or in town. When the fuel injectors went out at 33K miles and left us stranded, I was ready for another family to provide the "love" that truck needed. Traded it in for a 5.3L and now I regularly get 18-20 mpg in town and 22-24 mpg on the highway with the V8 with no oil consumption. My dad has the 2.7L on a 2023 Silverado and regularly gets 22-24 mpg in town and on the highway and the oil level sticks right at the full mark on the dip stick between oil changes. I guess my 2.7L just wasn't a good one.

Turbo engines do tend to consume oil and if the worst you can say is you have to add a quart or so between oil changes then your way ahead of the game. Most car "reviews" consist of someone borrowing a car from the dealership for a few minutes/hours so its really nice to see a actual long term review. Easy thumbs up on your update and your probably over 100k on the milage by now.

Thanks for the comment. I hope this truck lasts without major issues for 200,000 miles or more. It’s been a fine truck so far, and topping off the oil is really not a big deal. But it can be bad if owners don’t regularly check their oil level. Thanks for watching!

Toyota's warranty was changed back around 2010 to state that it's normal for their engines to burn up to 1 quart every 1200 miles. Seems to be the reality of the world we live in these days with low tension oil rings, turbos, and thin oils.
@fondupot
@fondupot 2 ай бұрын
@karlschauff7989 the official GM literature also indicates up to 1 quart of oil consumption is “normal” in an oil change interval.

Interesting video, thanks from a 70 year old. Chevy trucks owned, 1966, 75, 93, 2015 Colorado. The 2015 transmission was a hot mess for shifting. Turbos: we had a Honda CRV turbo that added volume to the oil, it had the "oil dilution" problem in a warm climate. Since GM extended the 2.7L warranty to 5 years or 100,000 miles, might be a great truck with the idea of selling before warranty expires.

I’m glad you mentioned that goose honk noise the truck makes when you shut it off. Mine has done that since I bought it off the lot with 12 miles on it. It sat on the lot for a year and the air is very salty around where I live. Oil consumption seems to be consistent with all these trucks about a quart every 5000. I was worried I got on it a little too much during the break in period. Other than that 30,000 miles going strong.

Great review as I have a new 2023 2.7L and love it!!! As far as mileage I'm OK with 21 highway as my 07 5.3L was lucky getting 17mpg on long trips (this is by using a full tank and calculations vs. the MPG reading which was ALWAYS 1mpg high vs. math). So we're talking 20% increase in mileage and more power/torque. As far as oil, I haven't seen anymore than 1/2 quart low at 5K when I change it. My 5.3L burned almost the same amount. Back in 89 I bought a 5.0L Ford (sorry) Mustang. It burned a quart every 1K miles. It was well known that Ford loosened up those engines to reduce warranty claims for lead foots buying them (like me) ;-)

First comment here! Hey man! I do have the same trim and model. Haven’t had any issues yet. Still concerning about the gas mileage. Highest I got is 20.67 MPG. With the transmission, sometimes it does like a hit or kick specially when the engine turns off and then on with a full stop, once I put some gas it does that kind of kick. I already took it to the dealership and they say that is normal, but we know that everything is “normal” for them lol. Great videos my friend!

That mileage is pretty consistent with what I get. I usually see between 19-21 mpg on long extended highway trips. I also found that the engine seems to like 89 octane, so I have been using that for a while too. I was getting a rough running engine with 87 octane, so I did some tests with 93 and 89, and 89 seems to do the trick. I haven't experienced any transmission issues. Have you ever had yours serviced? First time it happened I was pulling up to a parking post and just as I was going to put it in park bam right into the post. Had to replace bumper. Dealer said normal, they all do it. I bought my 2016 F150 2.7 ecoboost twin turbo v6 new with 29 miles. I did my 13th oil change 6-10-24 @ 103k miles. There was 8,500 miles on the 5w30 Motorcraft synthetic blend. I think it was 15% life. It was maybe a quart low. I've never had to add oil to my truck. I don't trust anyone to change my oil not even the dealer. I had a neighbor who worked for a Chevy dealer on Metropolitan Pkwy in Atlanta. He said they used to drain the oil until they fill up a 3 quart can. They would put the drain plug back in. He said the manager claimed engines last longer when you mix old oil with new oil. This dealer closed years ago. I wonder why.
@fondupot
@fondupot Ай бұрын
lol. What a load of crap! that dealer was probably still charging the full amount for only changing half the oil. What a scam, glad they’re closed. I would start doing earlier oil changes on your eco boost. Cut down to say 30% on the oil life monitor. And keep an eye on your oil levels over three interval. 8500 miles is way to long in my opinion, try going 6000 miles between changes. Thanks for watching.

My 2019 Colorado na 4cyl burns the same amount of oil and has since it was brand new. New engines in all manufacturers burn oil now. Looser piston rings and valve guides coupled with super thin oil allows it to burn off in the quest for less friction and more mpg's. I just make sure to keep a quart on hand and check every 1K miles and change the oil every 5K. Once you know why, it's really not a big deal. The downside is all that burning oil may cause the cat to fail prematurely. Mine failed at 51K but was replaced under warranty.

@@fondupot most car manufacturers, only warranty a car/ truck for about 100,000 miles. (Engine and power train) by telling their customers but it’s OK to go 5000 miles between oil changes. BUT they are lying to you. The truth is that the vehicle not suffer “ noticeable wear”in that first hundred thousand miles from extended oil change interval. The real truth you are shortening the potential life of the engine. Most people trading a vehicle at around a 100,000 miles and do not care about the extra wear from these extended oil change intervals. The manufacturers are banking on it. If change your oil every 3000 miles on a normally aspirated engine with modern synthetic oil most engines can easily go 300,000 miles. Your vehicle it’s not only turbo charged, but it has direct injection therefore, there is much more cylinder pressures, causing blow by the piston rings. If you are only going to keep your truck for 130- 150,000 miles your interval will be just fine. But if you want that engines last 300,000 miles you need to change the oil much more often. When you consider an engine with only 2.7 L making about 310 hp something has to give. No normally aspirated 2.7 L engine. Is it going to make that kind of power. It’s a trade off. You either pay more for gasoline upfront or you replace your engine earlier. That is the bottom line. Oil that is not diluted with fuel vapor with less soot is better. Soot is a abrasive. This is why they talk about oil holding the soot in suspension. The 2.7 GM engine is a great idea. I’ve consider buying a GM truck with this engine. If I do I will ignore the 5000 mile interval. I will still change oil at 3000 miles.

I’m still testing the high mileage oil. I have about 1800 miles on my current oil change and so far the level seems to be holding. I told them what I learned and got them curious enough to look into it. And yes they found it to be true. Look for his video. Wasn’t done long ago. I’ll try to find it as well for you

@grantmeredith1264 I do all my oil changes. So I know what’s getting used. But send me the video you’re talking about.

Uses some oil between changes? Heck my jeep is 1 quart every 1000 miles. Dealer says normal. All car makers say that now. Loose tolerance build in todays engines.

Just don’t understand why would you buy a Turbo Four-cylinder I know the mileage is better But there’s no real liability you’re overworking that for a little engine I would definitely buy a V-8 While you still can

Firstly. I didn’t buy this truck. It’s a company truck. I just drive it and maintain it. Secondly, I would agree I want that V8 sound and power!

Honestly driving one isn’t bad at all. When I test drove this truck with one I was pleasantly surprised! (For reference I ended up with a ram 1500 lol). But I wouldn’t knock this engine. It was impressive plus imo more reliable than the v8s GM offers unless you get a software or tune to disable the afm

@completelylucid7596 it’s been a fine motor, other than the oil consumption issue. The only time I want more power is passing on the highway. But it does ok. I don’t really tow anything heavy, 5k - 7K lbs occasionally. It handles it all well. I have put 2000 lbs in the bed and while it squats. The truck seems to handle it fine. I like it.

Gobs of torque available at 1500 rpm’s. More than the 5.3. you don’t have to over work it.
