The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is a legitimate alternative to the other midsize SUVs on the market because of its age. And the TRD Sport is a new trim that adds a stiffer suspension for a better on-road ride.

I recently purchased 2021 4runner TRD Off road. Best decision ever. It has only 25000 kms. I couldn't get the 2022 model and 2023 models are way more than the sticker price. Its almost costing 75000$ CDN which is insane. Having a 4runner is a long term investment, i don't need to rethink before i can drive anywhere in any weather condition. So much reliability this model has proven in the past 15 years or so. I really hope if TOYOTA can keep this SUV as it is. Having so much technologies in the vehicles is another upcoming problem in the future. Which this SUV will never ever face. Cheers to all those are already owning this vehicle.

Thank you for a fair and honest review! I love the "tough" feel of my 2020 TRD Off Road Premium 4Runner. I spend a lot of time in remote, rugged mountain terrain and the confident feel of this vehicle is fantastic. It's time proven reliability, and it's toughness and simplicity are just what I need off road.

@@blackwatch7151 The new 3.5 twin turbo is really nice in the new LC300 but, I doubt toyota will produce the LC300 or even future generations without the 4.0 V6 especially here in the middle east it is so loved, very reliable and is cheap to maintain.

I recently bought the 4Runner TRD Sport. I agree that the interior needs to be updated, along with gas mileage but I also know that when a newer updated model comes out, there might be kinks that need to be worked out to ensure its reliability.

The 4Runner is a bulletproof platform especially the 4.0 litre engine with 5 speed transmission. This review does not do justice to the dinosaur engineering from Toyota that focuses on reliability. All other manufactures like Ford especially blow their heads off with high number of gears to achieve mediocre gas mileage but I can tell you this 5th gen 4Runner will outlast any SUVs from Ford, Jeep or GM. Real gas mileage for city driving for 4Runner is 12.4 litres/100 kms on regular gas. For its capabilities this is the best mid size SUV you can get for the money....talking about money you will get most of your money when you resell because it holds its resale value like a rock.

100% agree, that if Toyota would sell this same engine and platform for the next 10 years, people will still buy them. The unfortunate thing is that Toyota have to face the corrupted government bureaucracy and push for lower quality Turbo garbage engines just to save few coins at the gas pump. All I can say is, folks buy the 2023 while you can because they are not going to make them as good as these 4Runners anymore come 2024.

Steve, I always figured the 4Runner had a lower payload because of the soft / off road oriented suspension. Does payload include the weight of the humans in it tho - cause if so that does sound weak. Horseman, I do not know how having only 278 torque makes it a poser? That is what the low range in the transfer case is for. Even on road I think it does 0-60 in about 7.5 seconds which is not bad.

Love my new 2022 TRD Sport! Seems like many reviewers knock it, but in the process demonstrate that the sport is still capable of off road challenges, if needed, especially with ATRAC. Other reviewers with the TRD pros, even who go overland more often, have commented that they really don’t need the dual locking or “crawl” features. Most people won’t get off road but maybe 1-4 times a year. The rest of the year is street-bound. With the X-REAS, the drive is much smother, if needed I know I have the tools for the challenge, and the simple rugged “style” is what is popular these days, especially since the outdoor craze since the pandemic. Being over 50, ironically, this speaks to my mid-life-crisis self, and the Highlander looks more like a grandpa wagon. Bad MPG? Hell, I look great driving this beauty! And if the X-REAS ever gives out, that’s when I’ll upgrade the suspension, put a TRD front bumper and put off-road tires and wheel on there!

Thanks for all your great insights which is why I chose to buy this exact 4runner 2022 2WD, since 100% of my driving is normal road it now has 6k miles. I do have an issue and genuine dislike/concern about its transmission. I know it's an old true and tested built but for some reason it is so hard to shift out of park. Everytime it sounds like a harsh grind or bump. I have tried neutral + parking break and then park and it still so hard when I drive it next time to get it out of parking. It doesn't matter if its hot or cold. I took it to toyota and the tech said it was normal. It pulls forward when I shift it to park and when I turn the car off I hear a shutter or a light knock into parking. Please give me your advice since you have had yours for sometime. Or a video about the transmission rocking and if it's hard a normal thing to get out of parking. No transmission- rav4 2020, last year tundra, current tacoma feel this way or even any other first couple generations. Please help me out. Thank you!

Have you gotten this figured out? Mine had the same thing.. if I press the brake down harder it eliminates the sound. When you park you can try 2 things.. come to a stop, keep your foot on the brake, put the parking brake on and then shift into park. Or vice Versa.. come to a stop, keep your foot on the brake, shift into park, and then put the parking brake on. During all those steps keep your foot on the brake… only let go of the brake when you’re finished. This won’t help the noise when shifting from park into reverse or drive, but it will probably eliminate the rocking. As far as the noise while shifting.. try pressing the brake harder when you shift.

I've been wavering hard on Tacomas/4Runners. Those are what I want, but I just can't deal with their transmissions. Beyond the two just being so wheezy (esp. at altitude) with terrible gas mileage the pedal just has entire sections that do nothing. Like 40% of the travel doesn't speed you up or trigger a gear change - so anything but level driving is like this binary ON / OFF. You just have to get used to jamming the pedal to the floor because anything but barely adds power. I just wanna go 5mph faster on the highway, not drop two gears and kick the engine to redline just to achieve what, for most cars, takes just a slight increase of pressure on the pedal.

@@briandorsey6437 fantastic! maybe they resolved some of these things recently. I've driven tons of 4Runners but, honestly, none newer than 2018. The brake issues is fairly inconsistent, I've found. Some 4Runners worse than others, but none really linear. Not sure what's up. I mean, you can get used to anything, esp. if it's your daily. My 2016 4Runner really does all the same stuff I mentioned above, but some people notice it and some don't. I'm probably just being picky. Although, re: shifting all the after market pedal commander style stuff makes it clear that there's at least some market for people looking to change the throttle map. All that being said, I'm really pleased with my current 4Runner. For its niche, it's really unbeatable.

Interesting that you compare it to a wrangler. I'd say the competition from Jeep would be the Grand Cherokee, and it's 10 times nicer on road. The Toyota's are only somewhat reliable because they use old tech/platforms for many years. The problems with the new Tundra show that Toyota doesn't have a lock on reliability, their new stuff is just as problematic as everyone else. But yes if you want a "new" SUV that was designed in the 90's then the TRD is the one to get.

It looks great from outside in that trim. I don’t like the vinyl plastic trimmed seats. Cheap. And the nose dive on 4-Runner is scary. I get a Honda passport instead amd give up some never to be used outdoorsy capability for a more civilized vehicle.

I'm a Toyota guy but honestly there are better alternatives for people hauling pavement crawlers. Crap gas mileage, out dated interior, and low tech makes it a rough sell. But, if this comes with the 4x4 option, and looking for the occasional off roading capability, this would suit most enthusiast needs.

We were in the market for an suv a couple years ago and the wife wanted to test drive a 4 runner. There was literally nothing I liked....or she liked about it. Interior dated....exterior dated....powertrain dated. Noisy engine, weak performance, crappy handling... Her vehicle choice and it wasn't even close to being an option. I agreed.

Consumer Reports is a joke to any serious car buyer who does their own research before purchasing a vehicle. The 4Runner tops the list in many categories and is a big seller to this day despite being an old platform.

Pffff says the loser wanker who has never driven one with a big smile on his face….I bet you just read consumer reports 😂 How about you go talk to 4 Runner owners about their vehicles and find 97% of them absolutely in love with their rig….Try that question to most vehicle owners after 5 years with their cars…They are usually composing a list of ways their cars turned out to be disappointing or cheaply made or why they are looking forward to 2-3 years from now when they are going to sell it or trade it in….The 4 Runner owners are in love with what they have because it’s actually an awesome highly well made vehicle that the HAVE FALLEN in love with….Now go read your consumer reports by a private institution not publishing direct statements by all the real customers out there who keep their 4 Runners and never want to go back to the various vehicles they owned prior.

Out of date piece of JUNK. We put no thought into this model, inefficient engine, brick in the wind design when gas is $2.10 per liter! Enjoy your brand new 2022 (2009) 4 runner. Im surprised it doesnt have a cassette player in it. Couple this with Toyotas lack luster interior, line up and finance term and you will have your very own rough riding boat handing 4 runner. BUT if you hit a curb you'll be grateful.

Almost 💯 percent chance that which ever vehicle you eventually decided to go with (aside from Honda) will be in a scrap heap somewhere while this 4Runner will still be riding down the highway with hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock, still running like the day it rolled off the dealership lot. Not to mention the unmatched resale value. That’s the sad inevitability of your purchase.
